It was loads of fun joining you and Christy on this outing Tim! I’m glad I was able to help with the disc adjustments and it was a pleasure getting to drive Johnny 5. Looking forward to connecting again some time.
Around here farming in Minnesota the roller baskets like that don't work well unless everything is perfectly dry. A drag works better overall here. That looks like it is working well.
I’m not a trained horseman, but my understanding is that you can tell if the horse is happy by how “enthusiastic” they are; if they aren’t “hesitant” then they’re probably fairly pleased about the situation. 🐴
We run a lot of crumblers (rolling baskets) on our farm here in Nebraska and from many years of experience I would recommend that you tighten the tension for the rolling baskets even more! You won’t regret it.
Thanks for the advice. It seems to do a nice job. My only fear is that it might be holding up the rear gang of the disk...but I don’t think it is. Again, thanks for the feedback!
Ohhh Tim you bring back memories. The standard Disc in Romania is 10,5' for a 2wd 65hp tractor. Those tractors were struggling soo hard to pull that thing. If it was muddy you got stuck all day long, if it was too dry you couldn't get the bolders out. You had to put down manual spike tooth harrows behind. It's so much easier with big hp tractors with awd today, hydraulically folding discs and roller cages. Thanks for the Video!
I'm not an authority, but I've used discs before and I know it takes a bit of patience and quite a bit of adjusting to get them set right. My friends disc set seemed heavy enough, but we had to lay some railroad ties on top to keep it digging. Oh, and you've got stinky poo too! Yay!
Right when I thought a skid steer loader would have been the better tool, you addressed that in the narrative! But you are right, it wouldn't have been very good pulling the disk
Horses are a ton of work!!!!! I rake hay, I bale hay, I stack hay in the barn. Than I feed the hay to the horses. Than I get to clean up and spread what is left after the horses process the hay. LOL I get to do all this with my New Holland TC24D compact tractor. That is my reward for my daughter wanting to have a horse. Oh ya I have a 4 legged hay processor to. Compact tractors are the Swiss Army knife of the equipment world. They are not the best at any one job but can do almost anything!!!!
Amen and amen. And all the rear weights were needed. Unless you have cement to work on, that's the best you can expect on a dirt lot. Manure holds moisture and the ground just doesn't dry out.
Happy Easter guys. That disc did a great job. I liked how you were able to make adjustments to fine tune and get it working better. I think you should really wear a mask and keep your 6 feet distance. You never know if the people you're close to were near a carrier. We want to see more episodes and need you around.
I like that little tuffline disc. We have an older 12ft Tuffline we’ve used on the farm for probably 20 years or more now, there is a bunch of videos on my channel of it being used. Anyway, it lives up to the name, it’s gotta be a tough disc to survive the amount of rock we have here.
That's a nice disc Tim! I think you should have went a little wider to cover your tracks more but if you loading it on a trailer that's going to be hard to do! I wish my disc had a rolling basket on it, it makes it so smooth and level. Keep up the good videos.
I used a similar disc behing an 8n and the owner had to keep the back set straight, plus lay railroad ties on top to make it go deeper in dry hard soil. It took many passes to get two acres done.
As always, enjoyed the video and commentary. Glad to see more of the camera use....I’m thinking about it....have to talk to the “finance committee”. Easter blessings to you folks! He is Risen indeed!
That 5075 pulls the 8ft disc pretty good. We have an older 14ft john deere disc and used it at a neighbors job discing about 35 acres to plant oats in using an open cab 5075. Pulled it pretty good in some wet ground also. The discs were the big notched one but once we bought it they were barely notched at all. But we disced everything twice on that job and that 5075 pulled it just fine.
Tim, you have inspired me to get my own Johnny. I recently bought some acreage outside town and with the current financing offers from John Deere, I am expecting delivery of a 1025r on Friday. Keep up the good work and Happy Easter
This is when my Scrap grapple comes in handy. Got a 5 yard JB dump trailer and my Everything Attachment 6' Scrap grapple can pick up a yard of horse manure at a time.
That was the better way to push out the manure but they will get through a lot I wouldn't be afraid to drive over a bit of a pile before turning around or use a rear blade and back in and grab and pull. They do pull the best.
Would like to have had some of that horse hooey, last week when I tilled my garden. To cold to plant as yet. Just getting it ready. We have tomato plants growing, (inside) and they are coming right along. Thank you TTWT, God bless. Happy Easter!
I had a disc and even after adding weight I was not satisfied. You're doing this on soft spring soil and I noticed the several passes (some for adjustment). For me it just rode on top of sod. I think a disc is good for plowed ground. That.s when I got a serious tiller. By adjusting the speed of the tractor and depth of the 3 point I can go from deep garden prep to superficial shallow prep (for wild flowers) and in between. After the got the tiller the disc sat and I finally sold it.
Did you have a 3 point hitch mounted disk? I explained the big difference in weight per blade on a 3 point disk. This disk is cutting pretty well. ...oh, and yes, we use a 3 point tiller extensively. Absolutely LOVE the results.
@@TractorTimewithTim Yes, it was a 3 pt set-up and only 5 1/2 feet wide with about an extra150 lbs (combine) weights. Maybe the whole set-up was too light as you mentioned.
@@rayhaselby2081 yea, there really is no way to get enough weight on the disk and still be able to pick it up with the 3 point hitch on one of these tiny tractors. So, I am in agreement with you. A 3 point disk on a sub-compact tractor is essentially useless!
Dewy sure did like tell you what to do, once in charge always In charge. It looked like the harrow was keeping the rear discs out of the ground. Maybe you should have done 3 or 4 passes with the harrow up. I know that you'll not get the stink out of the tractor very soon. Happy Easter Tim and Family.
Yeah I was thinking that as well the double offsets do funky things when the gangs don't have even pressure front to rear. Wonder if you could convert those to a hydraulic lift/lower.
Nice disc. I'd have been tempted to use a box blade in the lot area working out some of that organic (horse) fertilizer. Hope you & your family have a Happy Easter. Stay safe.
the side to side walking of the disk i bet if you was to dig down in the spots it really walked you would find ground the disk could cut and that was what it was making the disk walk like that
Swell video Tim, you and Johnny 5 showed that pile of horse hooey who was boss, real nice job operating Johnny 5 close to the barn too, poor Christy always catches the horse hooey end of the stick. 😁 Happy Easter everyone. 👍✝️🙋♂️
I’d like to see that disc more if you all still have it. I’ve been looking at getting an 8’ pull type disc instead of a roto tiller. Had a tiller with my last tractor but I think a disc would be better for food plots.
You've validated my opinion that vegetable and grain farming is much "cleaner" than farming livestock! I spent a lot of time on farms with livestock as a kid and manure, whether it was from cows, horses, pigs, chickens, goats, or sheep seemed to present the same problems. Add the "mess" from culling calves and veal barns to the waste in the dairy cow barns, and vegetables and grain look even more appealing!
By just seeing it at the beginning it was the speed you were running it to not just the depth also it seem to inclined to the front that why it also pull to the sides
If they want to maintain that horse riding area, and the have a riding lawn tractor. They can get a small drag and pull it around to keep the grass/weeds down ad soft for the horses.
Try ripping the sod loose with your cultivators first and then going over it with the disc that will help them from grabbing and shifting The Sod is hard to deal with especially fescue
Do you need all that rear ballast on the tractor to pull that disk? Oh, never mind, 2 minutes after I typed that you talked about why they were there. You always read my mind!
They did not own a tractor but have been paying people to till and move the horse hooey. This year they couldn’t find anyone to do it with the equipment until TTWT said we would do it.
The disk os going to walk side to side. That is just the reality of those little light disc when you want to cut with the aggressive settings. Whatnis happening and you really can not control it is that one side or the other will cut a bit deeper. When it does that it just causes it to walk over. Best thing you could do is add weight to it. The rolling basket is probably hurting you as it is reducing the ground pressure the rear gang.
Well D-uh. Get the tires completely up off the ground, that will stop the hunting. If they are turning, they are acting like pivot points. That will help tons...
Push snow or manure that close to the barn is a good way to blow out a wall whether you made contact with the wall or not. I know you didn't have much room but that material should be pulled away from the wall first. From your video you can see where its happend before.
Maybe the disc needs more wieght for the heavy cut settings. Last week i worked up a garden spot last week. I used the 3 bottom 3 point plow the lightly disc then got 2 large 8ft trk bed trailer loads of manure from the nieghbor. Then i did a heavy disc cut but my disc is an old 6ft JD killifer that you open or close the spread to adjust the cut or close to transport it on the blades. I can not pull it with it open very far maybe when im able to get my 520 overhauled to get the power back i might be able to with more weight. Small areas dont work to well as left turns stop cutting and right turns it nose dives and stops the tractor. So i got out mom tiller and tilled trying to smooth it out. Im thinking of taking the 20 ft drag that is a chain pull style and making a 3 point lift frame so i hook on with the 3 point to use and if i need a sharp turn or back up just raise the 3 point
I feel that disc needs weight, it looks very light, I don't think it is going in far enough to keep it from drifting side to side, the rolling basket is not helping. it is taking weight off the back of the disc
Tim, I also have a 5075e and hate the narrow front tires have you found any option to something wider? I found a thread once about a 20” wheel tire combo that would match the height of the 9.5/24
