      Rubbing compound & Wax. Maybe a roof rack :b OH and those Japanese style side view mirrors that go up on the fenders.

      Swap that 20R for a 20RE with P/S and a 4 speed. Least that's if you REALLY want a decent no hassle ride overall. Solar panel might be a good investment and a camper top if thats your gig.

    Good day Mr Redline.
    I live in South Africa and here Toyota is like what Chevy is for America. True story is that my mother was born on the back of a Hilux next to the road because my grandfather did not make it to the hospital in time. They lived on a farm that was about 2 hours away from the nearest hospital.
    I used to own a 1985 Fj45 4.2 straight 6 petrol Land Cruiser that I rebuild from the ground up. It took me almost 10 years to do so as parts has been discontinued a long time ago. I recently sold it and bought a 2016 model 79 Land Cruiser V6 4.0 petrol. I just love Toyota. They are tough and reliable.
    Keep up the Good work.

      As a 70's mini trucker from Cali you might be interested to know the Toyota was not even on the map. The Datsun was the most popular followed by the Courier and Luv. We didn't have any Toyota's in our club. I have a museum quality 73 V8 Luv in my garage now.

    Just found your videos. Great work on what you done to get her going again. We just spent the last few years redoing our 73 Hilux, only 49K. Been in the family since new. They only came with 4 speed, didn't come out with the 5 speed till about 77. Oh yeah the looks you get when your out in it, feels great knowing all the work we put into it. All I have left is to recover the seat. Say anyone know where the horn relay is located on the 73? that's the only thing I can't get working.

    I have heard the 18R engines prefer higher octane gas. 18RC liked 86 . Try a few gallons to find out ? Also you keep mentioning another engine. My cousin had a truck same year as yours manual trans. Yellow. He rebuilt motor and put bigger tires on it. Big tires zapped power. He changed cam, carb , intake and exhaust. Made a difference. It was acceptable off road after mods. May be interesting. My cousin did this back in 1985 so there may be more or less power mod parts available now.

    I had a similar overcharging problem with my 1979 Toyota Pickup. Turns out that they made 2 different alternators and two different voltage regulators. The right voltage regulator has to be paired with the right alternator or else the alternator will overcharge the battery. Apparently one was a north american cold weather addition. It took a new voltage regulator and a couple of tries with the alternator to get it right. The numbers on the back of the alternator have to be right, not the wrong one with a wiring harness attached that supposedly switches the wires around. That did not work.

    Oh yeah my cousin also made his 73 Hilux disc brake. They make or at least used to make a kit. A LOT of people modded these trucks. I was born in 1971 so remember when they were popular and everywhere. Damn good little trucks.

    Man that truck looks just like my Chevy LUV I had in high school. Even the e-brake is the same. I think the LUV had an Isuzu motor with a 4 speed. We filled the bed with pea gravel once and got the front end off the ground. We put in bucket seats raised up on 2x4's. The height give a little more leg room. I'm 6ft and its tight in those cabs.

    2 months and you don't repair the simplest thing? at least a new alternator right? or a window, a simple 20 dollar radio, those things can be repaired in a couple of hours. poor truck

    • @redlineranch.
      @redlineranch.  5 місяців тому +1

      I’d never cut the dash up for a 20$ radio, a rear window and seal is almost impossible to find, and the alternator over charging was found on this trip.
      It’s gotten more attention and maintenance in the last 2 months than the previous 20 years. Plus with more than 10 vehicles to maintain and work on I’d say it’s getting more than it’s fair share of attention.
