Stigmatizing mental health issues or labeling ppl as "belonging in the looney bin" is part of the problem of why many folks refuse to get help or be honest about their mental health ... I know friends with lifelong schizophrenia, they take their meds and treat it very seriously, and use their "sick days" from work when they feel an episode coming on and need extra support before returning to their regular routine... also have family members that it took us going to the police and the courts to try and force her into an institution but couldn't get more than a 48 hour hold - long enough to get a diagnosis and a list of medications she'd need, but that she'd never actually take, and she was free to go back to the streets

What do you mean by "family should stick together" many people have no family to "stick" with. Pressuring people to stay in unhappy marriages will not help this situation. This has happened many times in homes with both parents. Many times husbands refuse mental care for their wife/partner. Many times such as this the father knows it's unsafe and still leaves the children. We need better mental health care. We need better follow up care. And clearly we need to educate people on post-partum psychosis.

It’s more than “leave her alone with her child” because safety plans have since been done away with due to continued infant deaths; they don’t work. Unfortunately the child should’ve been placed in CPS custody and mother should’ve been on antipsychotic injections and supervised visitation. Further, just as physicians need to “have a conversation” about women with a history of mania and or psychosis and childbearing, we need to have a larger conversation about men 40+ years at the time of conception, as it correlates to a higher risk of offspring with autism and schizophrenia.
