15 mins: Don't be daft Richard, you won't get any sound out of the speaker without the magnet attached!
I was going to say you need the magnet attached to get the coil to move, but you beat me to it LOL.
Great video. A couple humble observations, the diaphragm material is titanium, and clearly this HF driver was overpowered. The break in the wire occurs usually where ever the wire is stressed the most by movement and as a result has a slightly higher resistance so is it breaks there first. Also at 12:35 as you are scrapping the enamel off the voice coil wire, you can clearly see that the mechanical connection from the voice coil former to the diaphragm has failed. The adhesive probably failed due to prolonged over heating and cooling. Very hard to repair and expect same frequency response. By adding any additional weight to the diaphragm you change the Fs (resonant freq). etc etc. While on the road, I have had to make repairs like this, but only to get through some shows before we could replace the diaphragm or driver.
I love you videos, please keep up the great work !!
Richard, I realize this video is old, but I just want to make a suggestion that might help you in the future. Over time these big heavy drivers tend to sag causing the voice coil to move off center (it looked like one side of the coil was rubbing, or very close), thus if you make a reference mark before gluing on the dust cap, the driver can be installed with the tightest gap around the coil oriented to the top and let gravity do it's thing to center the driver.
I'd recognise that accent anywhere, where in Stoke on Trent, do you hail from my fellow potteries brethren? Longton/Blurton is the stomping ground of my youth, then briefly moving to Liverpool for 18 months. Before permanently relocating to Walsall, just a few miles south of Birmingham.
Great video, fixing something else then computer Parts cam also be preety interesting. I am really interested how long a fix like that will survive on the battlefield. Could be a day or maybe until something else brakes.
As always great job Richard!
A few years ago in the UK I was running a mobile disco. Called 'Dicky's Disco' beleive it or not. I did a repair the same as on the woofer here on two Peavey Black Widow 15" cabs (I was given for free by a pub/music bar popular with students, near the uni) ) and they were still working fine a couple years later when I left the UK and sold everything. Being mobile the speakers work very hard and get thrown around in vans a lot too and I gave them some welly for sure!
The tweeter repair I have no idea - I never tried to fix a compression driver before.
Of course previous results do not mean these will keep working. As I mentioned in the video I'm pretty confident on the subwoofer.
The guy is picking them up tomorrow - let's see what happens
Oh WOW I just remembered there is some video of Dicky's Disco on youtube! ua-cam.com/video/q4dSUj3z7EA/v-deo.html Those were good times! You can hear those Black Widows!!!
@@LearnElectronicsRepair haha looks great, well only time will tell how long they will last.
FYI 1/4 does not convert 6.5 is the closest. 10mm does not convert .... its between 10 and 11 or maybe 9 an 10 but it does not convert.
Just trying to be helpfully informative 😊
That's probably a 1/4 inch sae. The unmarked is a 1/4 inch bit driver
Heya nice speaker repair I think I can do that ?! maybe lol
Just a guess but would say epoxy and solder on hf diaphragm might make a serious impact to the frequency response.... Love your fix anything attitude but I'd probably drop $50 on a set of 4 replacements and do all the compression drivers in the bar so everything is matching and hes got a couple spares on the shelf for next time :)
TBH they never came back, they are using them in an Irish pub in Puerto Rico. That's not Puerto Rico the Caribbean island, it's the resort town in the south of Gran Canaria of the same name 😉
My speakers make that noise u did at 18:20
But u skimmed over and mumbled something about it.... what was it?
Are my speakers toast?
They play... but make that rattle sound with medium to high bass... thanks
Played too much Village People...
