Gynecomastia Surgery Planning - When Is Skin Removal Needed?

- The first and most important step in gynecomastia surgery planning is whether skin removal is needed or not. World-renowned and expert gyno removal surgeon, Dr. Caridi, explains the considerations that must be taken before proceeding with skin removal gyno surgery, a procedure with certain permanent effects.
Undoubtedly, the most widely misunderstood aspect of gynecomastia is the most basic - what IS gynecomastia? What is the definition of gynecomastia? Does gynecomastia give your body a feeling? If I can feel a bump under my skin, that is gyno, right? I have a “gland”, that’s gyno, correct? SIMPLY PUT, gynecomastia is the appearance of a female-like breast in a male - so if it looks like a female breast (“manboob”) then it IS gyno. No matter if you can feel a bump under the skin, if you feel a tingling in your breast, if there’s a “gland” or not, if it looks like a female breast and you’re a male, then it is gynecomastia.

The decision of whether skin removal is the most important step of gynecomastia surgery planning is because it is irreversible, produces large chest-wide scars, has a much longer recovery period and requires a higher degree of expertise to perform correctly. When Dr. C evaluates whether a patient will need skin removal, he is determining whether the patient’s skin elasticity, the ability of the skin to retract and tighten naturally, is good enough to not require skin excision.
With many years of experience to borrow from, Dr. C will quickly know for 99% of the patients he evaluates if they will need skin removal gyno surgery. On occasion, skin removal will be performed on a patient who is wanting tighter chest skin and is willing to accept additional scarring. For those who are on the fence between non-skin removal and skin removal, Dr. C will opt for performing non-skin removal gyno surgery first and, if needed, performing skin removal surgery later in a second procedure. At the Austin Gynecomastia Center, roughly 5% of patients have skin removal performed, while roughly 95% do not need skin removal and have standard gyno removal surgery only.

All too often, surgeons are eager to declare skin removal surgery is needed with a patient’s gynecomastia surgery. Unfortunately, a reality at the Austin Gynecomastia Center is that we hear from men who received gynecomastia treatment from a surgeon who hastily declared skin removal was necessary when it truly wasn’t. Remember, skin removal can ALWAYS be performed later as a secondary procedure after the skin has been given a chance to retract naturally. Please do your research when considering which surgeon will perform your gyno surgery and compare several surgeon’s opinions to get a good idea of whether you need skin removal surgery. A little more time doing research now may just help you avoid life-long chest scarring and unnecessary surgical costs.

Another excellent video Dr. I’m happy someone is educating folks about gyno skin removal and why /when it’s necessary. Everybody is different and avoiding scars is always preferred. Some drs will be too quick to tell you that you need skin removed when you don’t. Or they will tell you that you don’t when you really do, even claiming it’s absurd to even consider cutting someones skin. But I think you have a great and honest approach to handling the skin issue on clients that fall in that “grey” area. I appreciate you!

Does a person need to be as lean as possible to have an effective gynecomastia surgery. As I has not been working out, I am not as in nearing as good as shape as I was. Is it more successful when your lean?
Tom thumb A person doesn't have to be as lean as possible to have an effective gyno surgery, however, the results do get better and carry less risk the closer the patient is to their ideal weight. Doc , why don’t you use Renuvion, J-Plasma technique for skin tightening ?
Ladei Berkoti Non-surgical procedures to tighten the skin, such as Renuvion, don’t work. If that were the case I would never need to remove skin that is lax and sagging. It is a procedure offered by some medical providers, but I can’t recommend this to my patients in good conscience as it simply doesn’t work as advertised. I won't take advantage of my patients and feel good about my reputation doing so. As you probably know, I am far too honest to go down that road. It sounds wonderful but it’s a form of marketing to make people think they are benefiting from this treatment when, in fact, it contributes nothing to the final result.

@@wlplasticsurgery Damn you are cold Doctor, but in a good nonsense way. I am getting a gyno surgery in 10 days (by one of the best plastic surgeons in this part of Europe). And I have loose skin because of weight loss and the surgeon said he doesnt wanna do big incisions because its not necessary (one to the side of the nipple, one below it and one above it to get the nipple more up) thats how I understood him at least. Makes me feel good that he explained it the same way you did, thats how I know Im in good hands
