St. Thomas Ghost Town. Under Water for 156 Years!

- This is the story of St. Thomas, Nevada. We are visiting 156 years after the town of St. Thomas came to be and was flooded by the building of the Hoover Dam.
After the land was taken from the First Nations People of Ancestral Puebloans it was used by religious settlers. The town had a fairly successful first 5 years until the newly adjusted Nevada and Utah boundaries in the United States changed. The town property which may have originally been within Utah borders now belonged to the state of Nevada. The county demanded back taxes in gold for the time that the town was inside of Nevada borders. Knowing they could not pay the amount, the townspeople went back to their religious leader and asked for advice. They were told that they town could take a vote and that if they chose to leave they would be released from their "mission" with no penalty. It was not until 10 years later that the area began to repopulate with new town members.
St. Thomas grew to almost 500 residents and boasted a school, a hotel, a store, and a railroad. The town was a midway point for travelers back and forth from LA to Salt Lake City. Things were looking up for the town until 1928 when President Calvin Coolidge signed a bill authorizing the construction of a new dam. This would, of course, later become known as the Hoover Dam. The residents of the town were told by government officials that they would need to leave and that they would be paid the fair market value for their property. The Hoover Dam was officially dedicated by President Roosevelt in 1935 and the town has little time left. Residents began deconstructing their homes with the intent of rebuilding them elsewhere. By 1938 the town was declared to no longer exist with the closing of the St. Thomas post office.
St. Thomas stayed under 60-70 feet of water for most of the last century, only peaking out a handful of times. The area is now completely dry and is available to visit from a hiking trail inside of the Lake Mead Recreation Area.
To visit you must enter the Lake Mead Recreation Area (and pay $25 for a 1-7 day fee) and follow Northshore Rd approximately 60 miles. Watch for signs to St. Thomas and follow a turn down a dirt road. Four wheel drive is recommended although if conditions are very fair, a two wheel drive may be just fine. Continue down until the end of the road and park at the top of the hiking trail.
The trail is a 2.5 mile loop that is not maintained by Park Rangers. This is not handicapped accessible and is not available to those with mobility challenges. Please be sure to wear appropriate footwear, watch your step, keep an eye out for wildlife, and BRING HYDRATION. Travel at your own risk.
This area is a restricted zone for UAV so do not bring your drones and do not fly here.
We also didn't do any EVP or ghost box on this trip. It was supposed to be 92F and it ended up being 107F. So we had limited time out on the hike before it became dangerous to not return to the vehicle. We'll have to make a trip out on another cooler day.

@@timdarcy4170 Yes thank you for the recommendation. It was too hot to stay long enough for a spirit box. But, I'll probably go back sometime soon and try. It was honestly so hot that the dehydration and heat were becoming a real concern. So I had to leave before I got to try.

I thought the same thing about metal detecting. Unfortunately there are signs saying it's not allowed. But, yes. I do always watch out for wildlife. I recorded a whole section about snakes and burros and what not, but ended up deleting it. It was slowing down the story so I had to cut it.
