HOW TO GET A CHILD TO PLAY / INTERACT WITH YOU AND/OR OTHER CHILDREN
First, let's go over why kids are NOT interacting or playing with you or other children
Why kids are NOT interacting with you or another child:
    1) It's not beneficial for them - they are not GAINING something valuable through the interaction exchange (this could be due to differences in social skills for autistic toddlers-- ask your developmental pediatrician for more information)
    2) The task is too hard; therefore, they escape or avoid the task
    3) It's not FUN enough!!!
    ---
    Establish a play connect:
    1) Choose an EASY and FUN task (or something that you can make fun! - Like throwing a roll of toilet paper!)
    2) Give direct instruction (tell them exactly what to do) by using simple language
i.e. "Throw ball!" "Roll ball!" "Toss ball to mommy!"
    3) Model this for them
Level 1: Tell them "roll ball" - if no response, move to level 2
Level 2: Show them "roll ball!" - SHOW them how to roll the ball while you say "roll ball" - if no response, move to level 3
Level 3: HELP them - Physically get behind your child or client, and gently (and quickly so they don't run away or pull away in refusal) HELP them use their hands to push the ball!
Most important tip: GO CRAZY!!!! As soon as your child successfully (or even partially successfully) completes a reciprocal turn taking activity - even just 1 turn - BE OVERLY EXCITED (lots of hugs! kisses! tickles! Air plane baby! or even snacks!)
Complete this reciprocal play routine 1 time! Then make it into a game by increasing 1 repetition at a time - This keeps the activity FUN, NEW and EXCITING!!!
Grab grandma, dad, brother, sister, etc to help the interaction proceed with two kids/people interacting!
    ___
Modified play based "First/Then" - ask the child to do the "un-preferred" task or activity FIRST (in exchange) for the "preferred" activity/object/reward Example: "First High Five / Then Cookie!!" to develop rapport and trust of the exchange - prior to pairing with an non-preferred task
"FIRST roll ball , THEN gummy!" - GRAB GRANDMA, DAD, BROTHER and use them as a model for this!!! Tell sister or brother! "READY TO PLAY?!" First roll ball! Then cookie!!!" Give sister or brother the ball and help them roll it to you or partner if needed, THEN immediately reward them with a cookie!! YAY!!! "YOU ROLL BALL, YOU GET COOKIE!"
The point of this is that often times children try to escape tasks or avoid them before giving themselves an opportunity to learn the new toy or task and/or to enjoy the task (they leave before they know how much fun it is!)

    • HOW TO GET A CHILD TO ...
For more tips on getting a child to follow directions at home, make sure you check out this video: • HOW TO GET A CHILD TO ...
*The point of the FIRST/THEN behavioral approach is to help provide ample opportunities for your child to LEARN to enjoy and create a positive correlation for the social interaction!!!
END the activity before your child walks away! Keep the FUN balls up on the fridge or somewhere where your child does not ALWAYS have access!

    I like your videos
very helpful. My daughter is 3.9 yrs and has autism
She can label so many words , sings poems but not communicating
Her ABA has started last month
Does it really help, I’m so confused because she’s is not much responding to them. I don’t know what and how to do plz help

    • @TheSpeechScoop
      @TheSpeechScoop  3 роки тому +2

YES! ABA therapy is soooo beneficial (especially long term!) it just takes a while for the child to adjust! I promise it gets better & although it seems like a lot of small things, it adds up to huge gains in the end!!
ABA is data driven & also based on your child’s interests. Once all of the BCBAs or RBTs data is taken for baselines, then the work begins!
My advice is to let them do the ABA, ask how your child is responding & to what prompts, & implement SPEECH / language in the house, while incorporating some of their prompts or techniques! I hope this helps - if you have specific questions, please don’t hesitate to ask & I’ll help best I can, as a non-ABA therapist

I’d there something else besides playing ball? Like how can I get young child to play with play dough or board game etc

    • @TheSpeechScoop
      @TheSpeechScoop  3 роки тому

Do they not like play dough in general? You could definitely do “first / then” with first touch play dough, then cookie or any other preferred object!

    • @TheSpeechScoop
