Ustad Ali Akbar Khan and Pandit Swapan Chaudhuri - 1986 - Darbari Kannada, Adana, and Bhairavi

- Опубліковано 11 лют 2012
- Two legendary musicians, in full command of their respective instruments, perform Raga Darbari Kannada in jhaptal (10 beat cycle), Raga Adana in tintal (16 beat cycle), and Raga Bhairavi in tintal, jhaptal, and ektal (12 beat cycle).
Tabla players take note of Swapan-da's relatively restrained accompaniment in Darbari (compared to the Jhinjhoti from the first half that is posted separately) reflecting the more sombre mood of the raga. I mention this because I often hear tabla players playing too fast or too long and disrupting the mood of the raga which the vocalist or instrumentalist has painstakingly created. Swapan-da performs more playfully in the Jhinjhoti and more subdued in the Darbari and by doing so preserves the mood created by Khan-sahib.
No one will ever play like this again, Khansaheb is one off, never to return, except in small glimpses through his students. Thank you Khansaheb.
I roaded for him back in 1971 or 72 when he was in UK. Remember out long all night chats about music over a shot or two of Scotch.
The greatest master of the Sarod.
Music from Heaven.
It indeed was a privilege of those who had experienced live performances of this Pride of Bengal as well as the Pride of World, the Greatest Sarod exponent of the planet for all times to come.
No language can describe the ecstasy of the melody emanating from the strings of the Sarod of Ali Akbar Khan.
Khan sahib was my music master in Marin. He was incomparable.
🏵🏵🏵🏵🌸💐🌸🏵🏵🏵🏵
the sarod is like the nectar laden flower, which the honeybee Ali Akbar Khan continually dives in to, collecting the sweet pollen there.
I heard him play live with Zakir Hussain ji on tabla in 1972. I seriously thought about studying at his College of Music, but at 18 years old had no money of my own, and parents that shackled me. They abused my sensibilities & prohibited my ideas of deviating from the classical music training they invested in me.
(This made my love for all things Eastern and spiritual grow wildly
however!)
All glories to Ali Akbar Khan. Today, after so many years, I have visited Gwalior, India...birthplace of Tansen, whom he mentions in the beginning of this video. Tansen lit the lamps of Akbar's palace by singing deepak raga, and brought rains with "cloud" raga. His holy music guru, saint Swami Haridas of Vrindavan, established one of the most popular temples of Vrindavan as he worshiped a beautiful deity of Lord Krishna. spiritual pilgrims flock here to this day.
Even though the dog of Kaliyuga, the Age of quarrel and hypocrisy, is upon us, we can take shelter in spiritual life, and in those truly spiritual personalities who have dedicated their life to the higher realms of human existence. Actually we must take shelter in spiritual life to overcome the degredation of the age.
Christian, Muslim, young, old, black or white, sinful or pious, rich or poor, anyone can realise God. There is no material designation required to listen to the songs, the ragas, the sages, and the scriptures. We have the free will given by the Lord.
All glory be to God, that Supreme Personality of Godhead. 🏵🏵🏵🏵📿
Simply great to hear such a play of the masters! To cap it - a large file, at that. Ever grateful for this sharing-experience. many thanks.
This is perhaps one of the best Darbari I have ever heard ! From one of the all time Greats of Indian classical music, I.e. Ustad Ali Akbar Khan !
K M Tiwari, Allahabad.
heavenly feeling indeed
I can't express my joy when I heard him play Bach! (maybe he was teasing the audience, like "you people wouldn't know Bach from Shinola!" maybe?)
do you mean at 46:50?
@@marutanray At 38:15. At 46:50 he plays Greensleeves.
feels like I do not need anything in life!! what a performance!!
Ali Akbar khan--' is only The First & Last of Indian Classical Music'
To be specific I would like to add that Ustaad Ali Akbar Khan is the first and last of sarod..
Unfortunately you don’t have credibility to talk about that fundamental aspect, doesn’t matter whoever it is.
I was lucky enough to hear this man play, 40 years ago, from a front row seat. Put a bullet in my brain and altered my own entire career as an artist. He taught me how to burn, not merely fuck off.
+G. Fisher : Lovely comment Fisher. You are lucky that you saw that man performing. The Swapan Chaudhri Ali Akbar khan combo is like gold having perfume
kkl
I have been fortunate to listen to this greatest maestro at close quarters in gharana Adar . Mesmerising.
Gharoa asar (in private performance)
Andrews Doraiswam
Reminded again of what a musical genius Khansahib Ustad Ali Akbar Khan was.
Sensibility and rewaz are the key features of Bharatiya Marg Sangeet, these pieces tell this truth further 🙏
Two of the world's greatest performers...Masters of their work...we may never ever see any others surpass these two. Thank you for sharing.
what to say....wonderful.. masterly play...!! anything is very little to describe this stroke...
I'm just feeling lighter than anything...!! this raaga played by him just creates magic on me...

Thanks for posting this video and for the comments on the very important role of tabla accompaniment that Swapan-da exemplifies.
I feel fascinating and fresh after hearing this master
Simply great.
Not so difficult for such a man
👍👌💐☺️
Thank you for posting this.
I admire the beautiful peaceful facial expression of the Tambura player... she looks like a saint or something like that... like someone who is blessed to participate in the utmost worship of the "one God"... I know that this great master of music is a Muslim; I am a Christian, but I know he is worshiping the same God as me... I can hear it. Alleluia!
Such a sarcastic and ignorant comment. The ragas which this song is composed on comes from the Vedas, An ancient Indian scripture still followed and read by the Hindus.
Ali Akbar Saab comes from a Linage of music players that prayed to Hindu goddess of music Saraswati before each practice session.
There is only ONE ENERGY in Hinduism and that one energy takes on multiple forms. Just one God my friend . Hope you learned something new today .
+Shaniel S. Lal not meant to be sarcastic at all; just admiring the musicians, that's all.
+Shaniel S. Lal Pardon me, but of course I am aware of the Vedas and the historical source of these sounds... I am the last person to doubt this brilliant musician's status... do not presume that I am unaware of the system of musical knowledge called "Sangeet"... you sir had a very stuck-up tone in your last message to me... Ustad Ali Akbar Khan would not approve... neither would Devi Sarasvati... please mind your manners and watch your tone; the world is watching, if not God itself.
+Joseph LoGiurato I think you owe me an apology for calling me "ignorant" and "sarcastic".
+Shaniel S. Lal what do you think, Mr. Lal? Humble yourself!
Much obliged!
Thanks is just too little to express myself, still saying Thanks a billion!
True gem... both posts.
Khan saheb is the musician of all musicians, He is always out of comment.
Very nice
speechless .
grateful for your share and upload.
Thank you for sharing this Masterpiece with the world. Also your comments are very noteworthy. It is a very rare treat to continue to attend the concert of this Legend of our times, and he continues to live in the heart of millions who love pure notes. Notes which connect with the soul within all. And yes, Swapnji's playing is in toal deference to the Great Master.

Really heart touching
Divine. No words to express,. My humble pranams to you, Ustad Ali Akbar Khansaab.
স্বপন-দাও আমার কাছে অন্যতম শ্রেষ্ঠ শিল্পী। তাঁকে-ও এই সুযোগে জানাই আন্তরিক শুভেচ্ছা ও অভিনন্দন।
The Alap of Raag Bhairavi feels as if Ustad Ji is calling out to someone. It feels so personal, as if he is crying out "Where are you? Please come." The rest of the Raga is really great, but the Alap is an offering to the Divine.
Great Master,supreb perfrmance

Spellbinding. They universalised the Indian classical music and got it reached to the zenith
Beautiful... sort of like Page / Bonham.
darun
The greatest instrumentalist of all times! But this is a solitary instance of his playing a gat in Darbari.
46:48 Is Ustad Ji playing a European medieval tune?
21:57
Aab... kaunan kaana bhare...His sarod verbalistic
ha! Greensleeves?
Having seen Ali Akbar Khan and Swapan Chaudhuri live in the mid-nineties, this night has stayed one of the most beautiful and intense musical experiences of my life. Heavenly!

Wah wah wah wah....Amazing!!!! Pt. Swapan ji did a great job. Very difficult and masterful rentitions by both Players indeed.
This is one of the exceptionally composed colour of life in this planet. It is mellifluous in the fabrication and amalgamation of both western and eastern juxtaposition of musical narration in Ali Akbar Khan's expression at the end of this work. Highly humane and enthralling into a most humble and ethical bahavior of human life after listening into this piece of music. This goes back to the humane and its quality, from which we enable to poster the last piece of humane in this planet.
One of the finest videos of Ustad on youtube.
Like a pray to God !
So beautiful.....thank you Ali Akbhar Kha......
What a pleasure !!! Many, many thanks !!!
The Blessed Artists and The Blissful Performances!!
Thanks for uploading this treat.
Thank you sooooo much for uploading the two very rare concerts of Ustad Ali Akbar Khan, the one who continue in the line of his Father Ustad Allauddin Khan to of the greatest Musicians of the last Century. Thanks too, for explain the role of good Tabla to not spoiled the mood of the Raga. Swapan knows the places of accompaniment and solo improvisation this is what makes the realy great musicians.
A Musician
gracias maestro por siempre ...
thank you tablamaster for this upload! Sujit, Germany.
Master of masters ... splendid ..

Just amazing. Great work thanks
so much perfection in sound just unparallel

Beautiful
Thanks
Magnificent. Ali Akbar Khan is probably my favourite Indian musician, among so many other brilliant performers both vocal and instrumental. I liked the expression on face of the tabla player Chaudhuri when he hears blissful moments that coincide with the rythm, and also the moments of humour when Khansahib quotes themes from Bach, and Greensleeves in what is otherwise such an intense emotional performance!
Forever GREAT!
So beautiful.....
Celestial!
2 great maestros
38:16 belongs the Bach - Bouree in E Minor great work
intoxicating!!!
Raga Darbari by Ustadji plucking heart strings & Pt Swapan
Babus restrained accompaniment takes one to another level .
Bhairavi which begins at 21:50 is simply exquisite.
again, I say; the tambura player is very lovely as she practices her art... I don't lust for her; I admire her devotion... is it so wrong for me to say that?
"I don't lust for her; I admire her devotion"...really? Come on brother. Call it like it is. She's beautiful and that is what you admire. How would you know of her devotion?
Some badass tihais in there.
15:00-15:51 amazing rhythmic figures!
Interesting that Raags Darbari and Adhana have the same movements but Darbari is not considered a Raag that can best be played in drut tempo, so Raag Adhana comes to the rescue.
Why can't Darbari be played at drut tempo? And considered by who?
kinda cool to see him weave in 'greensleeves' at around 46m30s
good
Hello tablameister. Are you able to put the video back up of Pandit Swapan Chaudhuri playing tintal solo accompanied by sarangi? I saw it a few days ago and can't seem to find anymore. Thank you
what's the tune at 46:51??? sounds soo familiar.
where was the concert held.
Canada
greensleeves ... celtic folk
