If there is a goal that I remember well from Mexico 86, it was Gordon Strachan's goal against Germany. He was excited celebrating his goal and at the same time trying in vain to jump over the billboard that he couldn't due to his height. Obviously he took it very gracefully and it was one of those postcards that are pleasantly saved in the memory of the World Cups. Greetings from Tucuman-Argentina
I remember the 2nd leg of the Australia game, we had o level exams at school. One of the guys brought in a portable handheld tv ,something most people did not have, very hard to get a glance at the screen during lunch, but too excited to sit an exam knowing the game was on.
I was in primary school that day. The p7s were allowed into the assemble room to watch it on the schools one telly! At breaktime we were up at the windows gesturing for them to tell us the latest score.
Thanks for this. This is the first time I have watched the Jock Stein footage since I saw it live, hearing Billy McNeil as well, it was a rough moment for Scotland and Celtic fans, and even Rangers fans. This was a golden era for Scotland the talent was mind boggling, we probably could have made two full squads and either one could have got it done. When you read the list of names and managers involved in the whole road to Mexico, its insane. Those players came from multiple great Scottish League teams and English teams, and many of them learned from the golden age of Scottish managers. I am a Celtic fan, any Celtic fan that can't enjoy watching Davie Cooper play is mental 😅
8m - Dalglish scoring our 3rd goal - we were right in line with it and celebrated like crazy, we KNEW then it would go down as one of our greatest goals ever !. RIP Jock - many, many thanks !
Loving Terry Yoraths pain at Davie Coopers late equaliser 🏴 Got to admit watching that back again Scotland mysteriously underperformed in that group
Always loved that Paul McStay screamer vs Iceland. The way he's moving it should have been a left foot strike. An how it beautifully glides into the top corner - old school memories.
I wonder how the squad would have performed had they not lost their manager on the night of qualification against Wales. It must have had a psychological effect on the team and somehow interrupted their flow, albeit Alex Ferguson obviously a top manager but he had no time with the team.
In the first 2 games, it really looked like a very good Scotland side was emerging. Prior to that, they beat Yugoslavia 6-1 in a friendly. The 3-1 win over Spain was probably the best I've ever seen from a Scotland side, which made the defeat at home to Wales all the more disappointing. Thereafter, they were fortunate to qualify, and in Mexico a few of their players looked past it.
Some iconic Socceroo players from that era as well. Remember them well. 37 years down the track and Graham Arnold finally got there. Well as a coach that is... Qatar 2022 in a few months..... Surprise me Arnie !!!!
Je me souviens de Strachan, Archibald, Dalglish, McAllister, etc....Leighton bien sûr. Pas de chance en 86. Mais toujours vaillants, courageux mais rarement chanceux.
Scotland were ridiculously lucky in that final group game. I remember watching it and felt physically sick for days. When the play-offs were drawn for this WC, I was really hoping it wouldn't be Scotland again because of '78 and '86.
Thanks for the goalkeeping clinic! Shocking goalkeeping on some of those goals. Mostly thanks for reminding me how far Scottish fitba has fallen!! We used to have so much class all over the pitch- back when we had midfielders who were not afraid of getting stuck in and a team who didn’t shrink in a big game
@@GusMac6129 That team had Willie Miller, Davie Cooper and Kenny Dalglish. The current Scotland team has Grant Hanley, Scott McTominay and Che Adams. And you are saying there has been no decline? The decline is ENORMOUS. The only thing better today is the shorts!
@@darrinfrew4066 Did you read what I typed? Everybody else, just got better. Denmark, Sweden, Belgium, Turkey, etc etc etc, they were all crap in those days. It was also WAY easier to qualify for majors in those days.
@@GusMac6129 Denmark were crap? They were one of the best international teams in the eighties - Morten Olsen, Soren Lerby, Michael Laudrup, Preben Elkjaer etc. Belgium were crap? Got to the Final of Euro 1980 and the semi finals of 1986 WC. I'll give you Turkey but pretty much all the Eastern European sides were better - Romania, Soviet Union, Bulgaria, Hungary, Poland and there were two German teams, East and West, and no micro nations like Gibraltar and San Marino. Four team groups, usually at least 3 good teams in them and no room for error. BTW that Wales match in these highlights was the only home World Cup qualifying match we lost in about 40 years. We lose more per campaign these days. 8 teams qualified for the Euro finals so it was much much harder to qualify unlike now where virtually everyone gets in. World Cups, qualification was shorter but easier? You usually had to beat a major nation - Spain, France, Czechoslovakia (then European champions) etc.
@@darrinfrew4066 Aye Denmark were crap, they were a cult team, that like Scotland achieved nothing. The Denmark team of the 90's & today were far superior. Just like Belgium. But i can tell you life in some kind of bubble of the past, by all means enjoy, i do. I enjoy looking back. In fact Scotland were probably a better team in the 90's, then they were in the 80's. But the fact of the matter is. And this is the last time i will say it. EVERYBODY ELSE just got better.
After these qualifiers Scotland did not achieve a positive result, they were knocked out of the first round with two defeats, one draw and one point !!
The original plan was for another group to be played between the 3 runners up of the 4 team-groups (would have been Scotland, Belgium and the Netherlands) with the winners qualifying for Mexico and the runners-up going on to play the OFC winners (Australia) but UEFA thought that would be too many games to fit in so changed the format.
It's OK. Wales will have plenty of opportunities to embarrass themselves in front of the whole world. Jokes aside, here is a Welsh song I discovered a few years ago: ua-cam.com/video/upkDEvGMzc8/v-deo.html
A legendary player in this Scotland : King Kenny Dalglish ! 🏴🇮🇹
My best salutes to Scottish fans from Turkey 🇹🇷
The Scotland - Spain game at Hampden was Kenny Dalglish's 30th and last goal for Scotland
King Kenny

No, he was pretending to try to jump over it in order to parody all the other players who did so.
Some atmosphere on the home games here. The roar when Scotland score the opener against Iceland is impressive!

yeah and liverpool fc legends like graeme souness, alan hansen, kenny dalglish and steve nicol, no wonder they beat spain comfortably.

New episode !! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Paul McStay was a fantastic footballer wasn't he? I'm a Rangers fan btw, not that should matter.
Certainly during the 60's, 70's and 80's Scotland had the players available to possibly win a major tournament 🤷🏻♂️

Great video
worth it just to see Kenny's goal agains Spain, his 30th and last for Scotland
Quality!!
Jock Stein (1922-1985) RIP, KIA at Ninian Park.

Escocia nunca ha pasado la fase de grupos en los mundiales
A bit off that you don't mention Jock Stein's death.
Could we see Mark Hughes (Wales) fantastic overhead kick goal against Spain?
No wales were shit

Leighton atajó hasta 1998, en la derrota y eliminación vs 🇲🇦 por 0-3.
Shame we never got to see guys like Ian Rush and Mark Hughes do their thing at a World Cup finals or even a Euro finals.
i remember Ireland having to qualify with a play off versus Iran fro 2002 World Cup...we won thank God....cheers FIFA

Jock stein , he sadly dead of a massive heart attack at the end of the wales game and Ferguson took charge at the world cup.
the only goal clos scored for la furia roja. never played in major tournaments.
Yep, I remember Gordillo, Butragueno, Arkonada, Senor...never heard of Clos

Leave politics out of football. People like you are a cancer.
It's the WEF she's obeying, not the Scottish people.
Scotland extremely lucky qualifying here, especially having to play the "International play off" instead of the dangerous UEFA play off.
That’s just the way it was then - there was only one Soviet Union team then in the European qualifiers for the WC
Yea and Yugoslavia as well. The players Scotland had back then, a lot of quality players so we rightly qualified for world cups.
