  • Replaced the old blown Cane Creek shock on my 1997 Jamis Dakar mountain bike With a $25 DNM DV-6 coil shock. Had to use he original hardware but fit well. Plan is to use this as a cheap commuter.

Doing a complete restore on a Jamis Dakar like yours. In case anyone else finds this video searching for options....
Went with the dual air shock from the same manufacturer. Unfortunately, the AD-8's bushing diameter is slightly smaller than the diameter of the front and rear holes of the shock. This means there is play between bushing and shock - not good. Tried every combination of Frankensteining the bushings and pivots between the two shocks without success. It does seem that the AD8' aluminum body has steel inserts pressed into the holes that might be the shim that is needed. However, those would need a press to get out from what I can tell
So, I decided to just drill out the 6 mm holes in the frame to 8 mm (drilling out the threads on the rear mounting hole) and using M8 bolts with locknuts. The frame takes a 40mm long bolt for front, 45mm long for rear.
This still wasn't good enough because, as you noted, the front mount on this frame is slightly narrower than the rear to accomodate the AD-8. So, I dremeled the front bushing of the shock to get it to fit. Not the most elegant solution. A replacement vintage Cane Creek shock would have been better, but it's nice to have dual air, compression damping adjustment, lockout and all that.

My old SUNN XCHOX 996 from 1996 was stuffed with a DNM rear spring shock as standard. It still works yet, got serviced only 2 times. Still no air or oil leaks. On RockShox dampers 90% the price is payed for the manufacturer name.

Thanks for the video. I used this to switch out my 22 year old AD-10 on my Gary Fisher Sugar 2. I've been looking for the right O-Rings to replace on my ol'Girl but this gives me a way to still ride her until then
I was able to use the stock bushings and bolts with no play from the AD-10

I would take it part and put some grease around the O-rings. Do this would most likely cause it to seal.

From doing research on it even new they were prone to losing air and people had trouble with them on the trail. Since this will be a commuter it’s more practical to use the maintenance free newer shock.

I was unable to find a Rebuild kit but if you take it apart and measure the o rings you should be able to find new ones

I already took it apart. Simple design. Only air, no oil. My old Fox Alps4 on my Cannondale was much nicer. Both designs are outdated though.

Anyways, thanks for the vid. My coil squeaks on my bike when I hit bumps. Should I lubricate it somehow?

I sprayed and wiped down coil spring. No squeaks.

I would have repaired the old shock that’s a shit shock

If you can find a link to the repair kit for the AD-8 you are more than welcome to post it for me. This is going to be used as a commuter around Washington DC so why not put a "shit shock" on it? BTW this cheap modern shock actually works better than the primitive air shock technology on the old shock.
