Food for free is a great book...the asides are quite funny too! Great video squire. Thank you for your uploads, invaluable information passed on for free and you always come across in a clear informed manner. Thank you so much!
Just spent £45 on world of books website based off your recommendations, thanks for this info! Wish it was affiliated links so you could have made commission on the purchases!
I have 3 foraging books, 2 of them dont have a lot of pictures. The book from Mark "Merriwether, has stem, leaf, seed, flower and root pictures. really helps with identifying plants.
Thanks for this. I have come across so many foraging books that catalogue tons of plants with barely a couple of paragraphs and practically no pictures.
Hellooooooooooo..got the first tiny book and WildFood UK heavy ! "pocket" book I bought for my brothers..& the coffee table Handbook which I also find the fotos frustrating and not well identified .. was a gift Thanks for reminding me I need to buy the seaside one .. am loving the others & for the tips 🤩 especially the enticing and aptly named Nevermind the Burdocks 😂🤩🦊❇️🌱🌿
Must add tho that the Wildfood UK pocket book's warning symbols (green tick/exclamation mark/red cross) should be bigger, placed above the name and not towards the spine..Plus poisonous section at the back and the pages be colour coded perhaps for easy flick fru..also some photos aren't as clear..however the umbilifer family am not 100% confident of so I steer clear even though I Def can identify the classic hemlock there are two types, waterdrop
I use Collins food for free and Collins gem mushrooms,I also done a foraging diploma and retained a lot of the coursework. Thanks mate. Theres no better substitute than getting out amongst it. Wild garlic is out now ,but no hack by the hedge yet here in north Yorkshire 👍🍄🌿🌳
Thank you for the excellent info. Like others, I have purchased unsuitable book before. Now thanks to you, at the end of the video I have already bought later edition of Food for Free- Richard Mabey.
Thanks Lewis, I have a few of those books. I think I will get all mine out and have a ponder. If you ever bring a book out yours would be the best, make sure to have a calendar at the front that was a good idea 😀
Thanks again Lewis, I've got some of those books I'm currently waiting on your one coming out, Marlow on UA-cam I can't remember his channel name but his book is fantastic his channel too.
Great video! One thing worth pointing out is that not all copies of the same book are equal. I decided to buy the Food For Free hardcover book. I have had the small field guide for years. I noticed that the size of the hardcovers varied and then went onto Amazon to read some reviews. The 50th anniversary edition is smaller in size and does not have any photos. It might be half price compared to the 40th anniversary edition (2012) but that is a no-no as far as I am concerned. I paid the extra and got the 40th edition. Also I have The Foragers Calendar paperback and would say the quality of pics in it are beyond useless. May as well not have any. I am guessing that the hardcover has decent pictures. Very annoying these differences to be honest.
My mum have me a copy of the pocket Food for Free when we first started watching your videos and we're developing a bit of a collection so this will be very helpful. How long until we can get a UK Wildcrafts book?
@@UKWILDCRAFTS Amazing! Good luck on your travels. Are you planning to document it online anywhere? Would be fun to follow you but I understand you might not want to.
Hi great videos. Im thinking of starting to forage but leave mushrooms out of the equation. My question is have you ever had any close calls when eating any of the plants or mushrooms that you have foraged?
I’ve actually never had any close calls no. I’ve always lived by the rule I need to be 100% sure of my ID. Never be brave or take any risks with wild foods :). And also have at least 3 identification features for a plant to be sure
I tried harvesting sum milk thistle seeds last summer n str8 away they first problem hit me the bloody thistles! I can't get into the things, what do you do wear sum strong gloves n use a knife I suppose?
Also I found our elderberry never ripened to black enough to be harvested. You have to be really fast as a forager and know exactly when its gonna be there n ready n hope the animals havn't got it!
Cheers mate, just looking into foraging mushrooms locally, I can't believe how much stigma there is around mushroom picking, everyone i've spoke to seems to think its far too dangerous and that every mushroom is poisonous or that every mushroom thats edible has an identical poisonous counterpart but after watching a few of your videos im not sure why everyone is so scared, so long as you do your research and arent lazy in identification or preparation it seems like a very good way to keep the stomach filled all year round.
Yes I know, it’s a very British thing. In the UK people have a strong fear of mushrooms, or mycophopia. You don’t get it in the rest of Europe like France or Poland it’s common that people pick wild mushrooms. I’ve often had people come up to me when foraging and saying ‘what are you doing?? it might be poisonous!!’ Haha. But like you say, as long as you are thorough and not lazy in identification it’s fine :)
Thank you for these great recommendations, I have a couple of these already but I'm putting the rest on my to buy list. Another great one is Hedgerow Medicine by Julie Bruton-Seal and Matthew Seal, obviously more medicinal based but a wonderful resource for anyone into that side of things. Then of course Roger Phillips, Mushrooms, for all the shroom heads out there :) Thanks again for another great video, keep up the good work!
O yes Hedgerow medicine is great ! Friend loaned that to me last year, an enjoyable informative easily digestible layout too on each chapter..just how I like t read stuff ☺️
Thanks for the advice, I ended up buying wildfooduk pocket book its a good nbegginers guide that goes through it in a good organised way. Interested in buying more of these you have recomended though!

thanks for the info, I didn't know such books existed. This is very helpful
illustrations are better than photos because every detail is drawn on purpose and there are no background distractions
