This .. LIVE and Snipper LIVE plus all the rest.. no wonder he ha a heart attack.. the passion and intensity.. one of the few who's Love was bigger than their heart could take.. Harry.. you are missed and still loved.. So much gone so early..
I can't believe that there's a live version of this after all of these years. I remember seeing Harry when the album was released and he didn't do this song on the tour. I always considered myself lucky that I saw him do Sniper live in 1976. Thanks to the uploader!!!
Tracy Kornfeld. I 2 saw him live I tx a year before he died. He was. A good man all the way to his soul.......he played cats in the cradle for me and Im blown away still. Gold blessed.
I cannot believe I haven't stumbled upon this before. I know that sometime in late 76 or early 77 I saw Harry and he played this song before the album came out. The crowd (and especially ME) was hanging on every word of this masterpiece. It was an amazing experience and this is one of my favorite songs he ever did! I honestly have had dreams about that moment, thank you for bringing the dream into a little better focus. Miss him so much! No one could tell it like Harry!
One of my top 3 favorites. I got to see Harry many times and he always talked and signed anything. I even got to go to his house for a WHYHUNGER benefit. He was as friendly as ever and played football, cooked hot dogs and hamburgers and gave us a concert sitting on his backyard lawn. I will remember it forever! No one will ever match him.
I first heard this when I was 21 or 22. I was someone thrust into adulthood from a protected yet hardworking youth. The age of 33 seemed distant if not unattainable and this song rang prophetic and professorial. That tragedy did soon curtail Harry and left me wondering where the words would come from. I listened to it today on my son's 33rd Birthday and it still rings prophetic and professorial. At 38 he had surmised this human condition better than I have at now 62. I can only be consoled that I was able to make that choice to embrace the kid out on the corner strumming his guitar.
I am 64 and feel like you do. My son is 40 and he still holds his dream of acting as I do mine of music. I remember my first time. 1979, I was 22 and a friend had me sit down in the middle of his good speakers and stereo system, he gave me the lyrics and said 'dont get ahead of yourself'... he said I reminded him of this song. So... I still follow, I still pursue... and I wish Harry was still around to give us some answers... or peace.
One of my top four pieces of music ever written -- along with Beethoven's Symphony #6, Jethro Tull's "A Passion Play", and Mike Oldfield's "Hergest Ridge".
I always had wondered if there was a live copy of this! One of my top 5 favorites of Harry's... Thank you for posting this! Many smiles tonight listening to this!
Harry live was the best. Taxi live was the most moving songs ever. Sniper live was incredible. I would love to hear "Old College Avenue" live. He's one of the most underrated performers and songwriters of all time.

This is the first time I've ever heard it. Such a poet! This is a gem!
Harry was just so amazing!
Loved this song from day one tells his story long 16 minute sing every second is a gem
This is one of the all-time great songs!
Only Harry could write a song like this.
great version of one of harry's best songs.
I think this will be the recording from the Rainbow Theatre in London - 3 September 1977
I was there...he met everyone outside in the foyer afterwards and signed his book. I still have mine.
Almost 15 minutes of perfection, if George Carlin Sang a song, Harry rest easy brother
How have I missed this version? Wow!
Love this live version!

Many think Harry Chapin is not worthy to be compared to Bob Dylan. This song proves them wrong.
thank you for this ! Harry in my Hero
this is one you won't hear me cover... by golly, it's almost 14 minutes long. That does not stop me from reciting all the words to this masterpiece!
Love it! Never heard a live version before...
Excellent thanks

Thank you for posting this! The sound quality is great; it sounds like it is right off the soundboard! (Can you say where this is from?)
I think I need to look up the lyrics. Pretty interesting stuff.
