Waterparks have the best social media presence. Some might call it cringe, but I adore it. Absolutely hilarious. I mean, the lead singer just sold his leg hair on ebay.... I love those guys...
It's just worse. The money isn't in pop punk anymore so talented people rather make different music. Bands like waterparks show pop punk can still thrive
i wouldn't say they're underrated, but defs my favorite pop punk band by far. their musicianship is second to none and are always pushing the boundaries within the genre
daaaaamn. really hoping that you would add With Confidence on the list. you check them out, their material is amazing even before they got signed to Hopeless Records. would try listen to the other 4 bands on the list (already tried Neckdeep, Waterparks and State Champs. 101% enjoyed listening to them.)
ayy i love with confidence!!, literally love all of their stuff , i've seen them live 3 times they are amazing every time, met the whole band really down to earth :D
Definitely some good picks on here, State Champs and Neck Deep are definitely favorites, although I also love The Story So Far who are massively underrated. Moose Blood are also great, but they're probably more alternative rock
THE STORY SO FAR? UNDERRATED!? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. Ahem. Honey. Where were you in 2011-2014? That was the band that MADE half of the shitty pop punk bands of today. TTSF were basically the blink-182 of the 10s. There a trillion of TTSF copycats.
When I first heard "Came Out Swinging" I started crying because I thought of my late grandfather and how much I felt the chorus related to the year that followed my grandfather's death. "I spent this year as a ghost and I'm not sure what I'm looking for. A voice on the phone that you rarely answer anymore". Those lyrics get me every time I hear them
I'm beyond proud to see The Wonder Years, Neck Deep, and State Champs, though my other four would've been Broadside (for their phenomenal lyrics), Microwave, Four Year Strong, and Seaway. I would've said Polar Bear Club, but I tried to stick exclusively to bands currently making new music
Beyond ARTV I guess I just look at songs like Lighterless and see enough pop punk influences. for me it's a similar thing to people including Tiny Moving Parts or Modern Baseball on lists. they tour with a lot of the bands in the scene, and the influences are fairly obvious. I'm honestly just glad to know other people out there are finding the band. to this day, theyre still criminally underrated.
I've got to say I agree with most of those. Recently got into Waterparks and they are a hell of an earworm. To add, I'd say Four Year Strong are a solid favorite of mine. I also recently found out about Sleep On It and Broadside, and those are some up-and-comers I'd keep an eye on.
Love love love this list! I would have slipped Real Friends in here too but apart from that this list is brilliant! I've been obsessed with all these bands recently:)
my favourite bands are 1) with confidence 2) bring me the horizon (yes i like the old stuff, i think i like it more actually) 3) neck deep 4) waterparks 5) pierce the veil oh and like state champs can go somewhere in that list because it's almost been two years since i saw them live for the first time hahaha
I came here looking for modern pop punk band I could get into, and I found what I was looking for! I generally just can't really connect with most modern pop punk bands because I feel like it's become pretty watered down as of late. I will definitely look into Joyce Manor.
I loved this video! Joyce manor, neck deep, the wonder years, and state champs are some of my favorites! I highly recommend seeing those 4 bands live. They were amazing.
TYSM JOHN FOR MENTIONING STATE CHAMPS AND WATERPARKS THEY ARE BOTH SO UNDERRATED AND I HAVE THE PLEASURE OF SEEING THEM BOTH THIS YEAR SO I DEF CANT WAIT
Just FYI, I wasn't claiming they were a modern pop punk band, he just said to mention any bands we like, and as he mentioned he likes male/female pairings on vocals, so I thought it might be a good fit. And as I can agree that they do fit in with some of the older bands, I find WATIC are a bit of grey area. With their first EP releasing in 2010, it's hard to just throw them into the bands like ATL and Mayday Parade who started in the mid-2000s. Also I'd say their last album, Weird Kids definitely falls into the modern pop-punk area, cause it only came out in 2014, and as much as I get that music changes quickly, 2-3 years just doesn't seem long enough for something to be 'not-modern'. That's just my opinion, I have a bit of a warped view of what modern means haha :P Regardless, happy to see others love this band and here's to hoping when the band says "it's not goodbye, it's just BRB" that they mean it!
you can't tell me Under Soil & Dirt/What You Don't See are not some of the best records of the modern pop punk era. like..... cmon man. ESPPPP if you like/understand what Mobo is about.
Its always interesting to see where punk music is going. Im a full on metal head , im a fan of a lot of the Tampa based death metal bands like Death and Obituary. However I grew up listening to Blink 182 and Sum 41 and im still a fan of Yellowcard and to see that alot of the newer bands are returning to the era of punk where albums like Ocean Avenue and Enema of the State is a good thing and im glad that its back to when pop punk was fun.
Hi Jon, nice list, ill definetly check them out. On the other hand, have you listened to Alesana's Annabel trilogy? (The emptiness + a place .. + confessions) I'd like to hear your opinion about it!
A few days ago I went to go see All Time Low, SWMRS and Waterparks live. It was quite upsetting since the traffic in my city was quite bad and I missed Water Parks by two minutes, when I got there Cole from SWMRS was just on stage tuning his guitar and the Waterparks sign wasn't even down yet. ;-;
The whole video I was like I hope neck deep is in here..... they're my favorite pop punk band. I also loved that TWY, mobo, and state champs are in here. They're all amazing
Stonemountboy (I know this comment is a year old, but...) I saw them open for Sum 41 a month ago and holy fuck, they were amazing!!! For a band who isn’t really a big name and not the main act, their stage presence was astounding. Like, holy shit. I even got a picture with their bassist. So fucking good.
You couldn't be more right about Modern Baseball being down to earth, I was at their show in Wiesbaden, Germany, the other night, it was unbelievably cool. They came up on stage so casually, drinking beer, tuning all the instruments and setting all the equipment themselves, were chatting with the crowd before and during the show, and because Brendan wasn't with them due to his mental problems, they asked someone from the crowd to come up on stage to sing 'The Weekend'. I was front row, but I realized that I forgot a part of the second verse, so I missed the opportunity of my life, lol :D But it was extremely cool, they are not only great musicians, but really chill dudes, especially Jake.
Also I've never seen you review anything Jeff Rosenstock has done and in my opinion he's really doing pop punk better than almost anyone ever has. I'd really recommend his stuff, it's all available for free on quoteunquote records.
First of all, just hearing you say Modern Baseball gives me fucking goosebumps. They are so fantastic. Good guys who make good, heartfelt music. And honestly, I would say they are actually more pop punk than emo. Also thank you for putting in Joyce Manor. I have never once thought to listen to them, and that little bit sounded like stuff I already listen to. I'm checking them out now.
real friends is really good as well, dan's voice is just so raw and filled with emotion, i've also been really digging trash boat and moose blood lately
You gotta check out the newest Homesafe record, not completely pop-punk but seriously, you cannot sleep on this guys. Evermore is such a solid album. Also, idk if you know them, but if you enjoy Joyce Manor and Modern Baseball, I definitely recommend you listen to The Front Bottoms. Maybe mostly to their old stuff, but overall they have a great discography.
I love Waterparks because of just how fun they are as people. Also, the way they mix electro music into their songs just hits me so hard. I listen pretty much on a daily basis😂
I recommend As It Is (another great pop-punk band) and Too Close To Touch, they're not pop-punk but they're such an amazing emotional band. They're also co-headlining a tour with Waterparks right now ;)
Thanks so much for giving me new bands to obsess over! I've fallen in love with most of the ones you mentioned. I watched this video months ago and two weeks ago I met the boy from Waterparks. Ugh. So glad I got exposed to all of these bands.
Love your in depth analysis of the shit that comes out your mouth lol went to a show and found this band recently and I thought they had a unique calm feel. I'd like your opinion. "Revelry-14 north" is the song they have now.
I decided to listen to waterparks after this. And all i can say is THEY ARE FANTASTIC! Thnakyou so much! I wouldnt have checked them out if it weren't for you
Jon, I really liked your list. Some recommendation is WSTR since you like Neck Deep. They just came out with a new album Friday. It's called Red, Green or Inbetween. It would be cool if you reviewed. I'd like to hear your thoughts on it.
Check out these: No Dice Makari Sunsleep Bearings Between You & Me Grayscale Makeout Oh Weatherly Milestones Forever Ends Here Narrative I the Mighty Off Guard Anarbor
Yo! If you like The Wonder Years, check out Soupy's side/folk band, Aaron West & The Roaring Twenties! He turned the storytelling up to 11 on his debut, "We Don't Have Each Other."
My fav on this list is Waterparks, I'm trying to get into Neck Deep and State Champs too. But my fav modern pop punk band probably has to be 5 Seconds Of Summer, in their older and newer content is very pop punk-y, but their 2014 debut album was very pop-y, but when their 2015 album came, I was pretty blown away that they wrote some of the songs that album with them was Joel Madden, Alex Gaskarth, and etc. you should check them out

Second Avenger They're the best pop punk band ever in my opinion and vastly criminally underrated.
i wouldn't say they're underrated, but defs my favorite pop punk band by far. their musicianship is second to none and are always pushing the boundaries within the genre

I love grayscale !!!
grayscale is amazing, such nice dudes as well.
daaaaamn. really hoping that you would add With Confidence on the list. you check them out, their material is amazing even before they got signed to Hopeless Records. would try listen to the other 4 bands on the list (already tried Neckdeep, Waterparks and State Champs. 101% enjoyed listening to them.)
Miggz Caibal i really like godzilla if you know it👌

Emma Bergen gnarwolves and seaway are great. I haven't kept up with Gnarwolves since their first couple releases though, I need to check in on them
Boston manor instead
Seaway is awesome. And the wonder years 🤘
Definitely some good picks on here, State Champs and Neck Deep are definitely favorites, although I also love The Story So Far who are massively underrated. Moose Blood are also great, but they're probably more alternative rock
Untitled i love Moose Blood sm!
Really? I never knew. I've always thought of the early 10's as kind of a dead period for pop punk. Okay, I stand corrected
Untitled Oh no no. The 10s was the rebirth of pop punk. The big three that ran this were The Wonder Years, The Story So Far and Man Overboard.
Untitled if we're talking about underrated then I'd definitely point out Seaway.
Also Mugi best girl.
Pinkguy
His new song Highschool Blink193 is a true gem
Sunforged Yes it is

I APPRECIATE YOU APPRECIATING WATERPARKS

When I first heard "Came Out Swinging" I started crying because I thought of my late grandfather and how much I felt the chorus related to the year that followed my grandfather's death. "I spent this year as a ghost and I'm not sure what I'm looking for. A voice on the phone that you rarely answer anymore". Those lyrics get me every time I hear them

+The Hitchhiking Hatbox i really don't consider Microwave at all pop punk, or else they would have been #1 lol. But to each their own categorization
BROADSIDE!!! They honestly do have the best lyrics and deserve so much more attention!!!
neck deep is no. 1

STATE CHAMPS STATE CHAMPS STATE CHAMPS STATE CHAMPS

If you erase Limitless Tonight Alive would be a good contender. I def agree with WaterParks, Neck Deep, and Joyce Manor
My favourites are definitely Neck Deep and All Time Low. (although ATL are more on the pop side)
Honey they ain't new and they sure as hell ain't pop punk these days.
Nope. Not at all.
my favourite bands are
1) with confidence
2) bring me the horizon (yes i like the old stuff, i think i like it more actually)
3) neck deep
4) waterparks
5) pierce the veil
oh and like state champs can go somewhere in that list because it's almost been two years since i saw them live for the first time hahaha
I came here looking for modern pop punk band I could get into, and I found what I was looking for! I generally just can't really connect with most modern pop punk bands because I feel like it's become pretty watered down as of late. I will definitely look into Joyce Manor.

This video introduced me to so many bands 2 years ago
TYSM JOHN FOR MENTIONING STATE CHAMPS AND WATERPARKS THEY ARE BOTH SO UNDERRATED AND I HAVE THE PLEASURE OF SEEING THEM BOTH THIS YEAR SO I DEF CANT WAIT
We Are the In Crowd is another band that has a male/female vocal pairing. I quite enjoy them
They tie in with the more All Time Low and Hey Monday esque pop-punk in my opinion
I like we are the in crowd but they haven't been active since 2014? I wouldn't consider them modern since they've all moved on and such
Just FYI, I wasn't claiming they were a modern pop punk band, he just said to mention any bands we like, and as he mentioned he likes male/female pairings on vocals, so I thought it might be a good fit. And as I can agree that they do fit in with some of the older bands, I find WATIC are a bit of grey area. That's just my opinion, I have a bit of a warped view of what modern means haha :P
Regardless, happy to see others love this band and here's to hoping when the band says "it's not goodbye, it's just BRB" that they mean it!
I live about 20 minutes away from Neck Deep's hometown. Met them at one of their shows last year. Such nice dudes!
Already knew all of them except for Mixtapes, I'm excited to check them out!
Literally wearing a waterparks tee n all😂 tbf they're literally my favourite band and Ive seen them 2 times
Direct Hit!, Mean Jeans, Banner Pilot, the Menzingers, the copyrights, off with their heads
The Story So Far should be on the list! Major L on that one bruh!
+Big E honestly can't really stand them so
Beyond ARTV YOU WHAAAAT??!!
you can't tell me Under Soil & Dirt/What You Don't See are not some of the best records of the modern pop punk era.
like..... cmon man. ESPPPP if you like/understand what Mobo is about.
They aren't good
Yes they are, they’re better than fucking state champs for sure
Its always interesting to see where punk music is going. Im a full on metal head , im a fan of a lot of the Tampa based death metal bands like Death and Obituary. However I grew up listening to Blink 182 and Sum 41 and im still a fan of Yellowcard and to see that alot of the newer bands are returning to the era of punk where albums like Ocean Avenue and Enema of the State is a good thing and im glad that its back to when pop punk was fun.
Got so happy when I saw Waterparks and Neck Deep! I love both of them so much❤️🙏🏻
Hi Jon, nice list, ill definetly check them out.
On the other hand, have you listened to Alesana's Annabel trilogy? (The emptiness + a place .. + confessions) I'd like to hear your opinion about it!
When I finally started listening and paying attention to the lyrics of The Story So Far songs, I fell in love with them. They're amazing
i immediately dropped everything and looked up mixtapes, damn i think i'm in love with that ladies voice!
Dude Mixtapes is soo underrated. They got so many catchy jams that are great for playing in the background when hanging with friends
7- state champs
6- the wonder years
5- knuckle puck
4- real friends
3- man overboard
2- neck deep
1-the story so far
I've been waiting for this!
The beginning was funny with the hamster😂😂😂
A few days ago I went to go see All Time Low, SWMRS and Waterparks live. It was quite upsetting since the traffic in my city was quite bad and I missed Water Parks by two minutes, when I got there Cole from SWMRS was just on stage tuning his guitar and the Waterparks sign wasn't even down yet. ;-;
Thanks Jon, Modern Baseball is Now one of my favorite bands of ALL TIME. Arguably my 11th or 12th favorite band ever
The whole video I was like I hope neck deep is in here..... they're my favorite pop punk band. I also loved that TWY, mobo, and state champs are in here. They're all amazing
Exactly what I've been after modern pop punk taking the genre in a new direction - thanks Jon! :)
that waterparks shirt tho 😭
Honestly, everyone is missing out on Seaway
Their song Airhead is the best pop punk song I've heard in forever
Stonemountboy (I know this comment is a year old, but...) I saw them open for Sum 41 a month ago and holy fuck, they were amazing!!! For a band who isn’t really a big name and not the main act, their stage presence was astounding. Like, holy shit. I even got a picture with their bassist. So fucking good.
Something wonderful. ..that song is so fun. I saw them with neck deep. I both bands
Been a Waterparks fan for quite awhile now. Seeing them last year at Warped Tour is a fond memory for me.
I don't even know how to thank you for introducing me to Waterparks. I'm obsessed
I love: State Champs, Waterparks, and Neck Deep!
Holy shit thank you for introducing me to waterparks, just listened to some of their work and its fucking great.
+Kyle Fields right on!! You're welcome!
Nice list John! You should check out Seaway, Wstr, and Best Years. All great pop punk bands
The Wonder Years are easily at the top of the game in pop punk quality-wise
You couldn't be more right about Modern Baseball being down to earth, I was at their show in Wiesbaden, Germany, the other night, it was unbelievably cool. They came up on stage so casually, drinking beer, tuning all the instruments and setting all the equipment themselves, were chatting with the crowd before and during the show, and because Brendan wasn't with them due to his mental problems, they asked someone from the crowd to come up on stage to sing 'The Weekend'. Modern baseball and the wonder years are my fucking favorite yo
Was gonna comment what no mixtapes mentioned in any comments or on the video but it just came on haha. I've seen then couple of times. Great people
I love Waterparks because of just how fun they are as people. Also, the way they mix electro music into their songs just hits me so hard. I listen pretty much on a daily basis😂
I got to see Waterparks a couple of days ago, they were so amazing 💙
With Confidence is one you should check out! Otherwise solid list.
+Kally Johnson I have checked them out! Mentioned them at the end of the video
Beyond ARTV ah sorry totally missed that part.
I recommend As It Is (another great pop-punk band) and Too Close To Touch, they're not pop-punk but they're such an amazing emotional band. They're also co-headlining a tour with Waterparks right now ;)
This video got me into waterparks so I just wanted to say THANK YOU SO MUCH
Thanks so much for giving me new bands to obsess over! I've fallen in love with most of the ones you mentioned. I watched this video months ago and two weeks ago I met the boy from Waterparks. Ugh. So glad I got exposed to all of these bands.

Jon, I really liked your list. Some recommendation is WSTR since you like Neck Deep. They just came out with a new album Friday. It's called Red, Green or Inbetween. It would be cool if you reviewed. I'd like to hear your thoughts on it.

I'm a simple human; i see awsten knight, i click
I also love state champs and neck deep so much omg they are also great in concert
My fav on this list is Waterparks, I'm trying to get into Neck Deep and State Champs too. But my fav modern pop punk band probably has to be 5 Seconds Of Summer, in their older and newer content is very pop punk-y, but their 2014 debut album was very pop-y, but when their 2015 album came, I was pretty blown away that they wrote some of the songs that album with them was Joel Madden, Alex Gaskarth, and etc. you should check them out
I love in the backround theres a ton of records-and a squirtle. Id love to know the story behind that
You should definitely check out As It Is, they are for sure my favorite pop punk band
