100% underrated, even if they print to order 70k of a card- now a days that’s still 10X less than other mass produced cards. Plus many Topps Now come out before their other RCs and they tend to capture amazing moments
I love these cards. The fact you can purchase quality cards on demand when cool things happen in MLB is very cool. Seems similar to what MLB the Show does with updated player cards in the game based on season stats. I kind of wonder how the Call Up cards will do over time on the secondary market. Also, if you earning Topps Reward points, you can use those to purchase these cards on the cheap!
Not accounting for value, but I prefer the type of card to just a regular bowman 1st card any day. I like to collect moments more than just cards of faces or random batting stance. For instance my favorite cards to collect are Todd Frazier Home Run Derby cards cause I was there with my dad and brother.
I never really understood this set until it was explained to me with this video. Now I am a fanboy. I love the concept. Cards capturing big moments. I love the living set artist cards as well. Just ordered 10 De La Cruz stealing home cards. I only really wanted one for the PC but I can give some to my family members as gifts. At $5 a pop it’s not a bad price at all.
I think people sleep on them. I like how they capture moments. And you can get some low printed copies if they’re lucky enough to not be printed highly. EDIT: Always find it funny when NEO critiques the multitude of parallels saying, “disco balls”, “pixie dust” and shit 😄 I love a lot of the different shiny, sparkly parallels but yeah, I think they should reduce the amount of parallels they release. There’s too many.
Toppsnow is way ahead of the curve, this is where cards should be heading, when phillies won NLCS images of Harper hitting that homer went nuts!! its an incredible set low print runs i think they're gonna hold value
I find Topps Now awesome for specific events that resonate with me and my hobby. I didn’t think of how these could transform to more prominence in the hobby though. I have the 2 Topps Now 2017 Derek Jeter Number Retirement Event at Yankees Stadium cards in PSA 10s for $50 total. I was at the event in NY with my wife and daughter. It was Mother’s Day weekend doubleheader and my wife loved being there to see her favorite player have his number retired. It was a great family trip to NY and having those cards means a lot.
I think the rules change moving forward if Topps/fanatics allow them too! To me the photography is huge. For Topps to really springboard off something like this, they need to up the quality and design of the cards to match the photography that highlights the epic moments that earn players Topps now cards. They could even mix these Topps now designs with the throwback Thursday designs. Would be better than current look.
The answer is no and has always been no. They're collector cards and immediately lose value. Long-term they're always worth about half the price of the retail price. Julio Rodriguez's "true" Topps Now rookie card from his first hit is a great example where recent sales were $7.15. I get it, triple relic, authentic base from the game, ect, ect, but that alone is $250 at most for a true collector. Honestly, it would be worth more if it just didn't have the "Call-Up" designation on it at all. They've never looked good. Important note that I'm a Brewers fan, so my take may be biased ;)
Completely agree. Trout is a once in a generation, aspirational standard for all rookies. Maybe one of these guys (Elly, Acuna, Soto, etc) ends up better than him or close enough (Note, only 5 players in MLB history have exceeded Trout's 7 season peak WAR: Ruth, Williams, Hornsby, Mays, Bonds). Add in Trout having so few rookies, no Topps Chrome rookie, etc, and you see why Trout has the value he has now, and why few if any of the current players will have a similar value in 10 years.
wrong! print runs or low they have specific moments of games, cool relics, auto's..certain low serial numbered auto's will maintain value over time, some topps total maintained value over the years
These are some of my favorite cards. Excellent photography shot at a specific moment in time. I believe these cards truly connect you to the game. Where were you when you watched this game? At the stadium? At home? With friends? Do you remember your reaction? The 90's had a lot of great action shot photography as well. Great topic.
I bought 5 of the base ones. Topps Now is underrated with soccer rookie cards. Sometimes their TN rookie card might be the only one they have for years
Been a Topps Now baseball consumer since launched. Pick and choose which ones I like - relics I don't buy because it's too expensive for a card. I have cheaper way to purchase game used relics / full pieces. I actually have relics of authenticated game used dirt. Topps can print cards of dirt to the moon.....LOL. Again - cool stuff but way too expensive for Pobre Joe.
I have a few Topps Now cards, but I have bought several copies of this (just the base version, not the relic) because it is a historic event with Stadium Club-level photography. Who knows how long this will last, but Elly has brought a level of excitement in his brief tenure
@@nas84payne I could not agree more! If I had the time/resources, I would try to collect all of the SC baseball sets and put them in binders. I love how those cards look
You have me intrigued NEO. I love the idea of these game-used moment cards. Not sure about as an investment, but as a collector, really cool. I got a $10 card from the Topps Series 2 hobby box. Looks like I need to check out this site. Until next time....
$499 is outrageous for a base relic card. Also think you're overestimating the moment a bit. 2-3 years from now it'll just be a cool trivia question answer rather than a defining historical moment. July game against the Brewers and all.
I grabbed this one for the image alone. Too cool. I think they’re fun cards but not expecting much value. Though you’re right the relic version of this card should absolutely be more valuable than whatever parallel there is next year.
Iconic moments are great for this. I just won't pay their FOMO prices though. Wait a couple years and you can pick this card up with the bases on it for half what they sold it for this week.
Because there will be no Topps 2023 cards (which is kinda bananas) - I feel like these 2023 cards are a viable option for the debut card (people collect the debut tickets) and meaningful games like the 3 sb on 2 pitches. Elly is an electric prospect and having to wait a year for Topps Series 1 - which is printed to the moon, sign me up for these cards instead!
I do believe that jersey fusion has been doing a specific game jerseys. They have a scan code on the back of the holder that links you to all the information about the jersey. Please correct me if I’m wrong.
You've been reading my mind lately. Check out the back of a 2002 Pacific Tom Brady jersey relic card. This is for ALL 2002 Pacific cards only. They are all cut from Brady's rookie season home jersey. It says it right on the back of every card but you can pick them up for less than his base 2002 Topps Chrome cards.
Great video NEO. I agree with your insights on Topps NOW. And the addition of the #ed chase is great. When did they add the #ed to NOW? I also love that I can use my NOW points. I need to get more NOW Points How does this compare to Rookie Card that is NOT pack pulled. Is this Star Jordan of modern?
At least we know exactly where the relics are from. I love it. Price may be a tad high, but you get a chance for super rare ones. This is a great idea in general.
Topps is selling these base cards online for $9.99. But on ebay they are available for $4.15? $500 seems like they are striking when the iron is hot but that is the best time to strike!
$500 is a terrible price. This is something that’s going to go down. You can look at 2003 upper deck mvp baseball and all the relics are from playoff games. This price shouldn’t even be a question if It’s close…
I have not paid the Topps Now cards much mind until lately. Let's say you are a Lionel Messi fan - how do you not have the card of him holding the World Cup a loft as a card in your canon? I just bought the de la Croz card you mentioned and the Ohtani card I had. I wish I had paid attention because I think even the base cards are essential. I agree, a relic of a base that he stole will have greater value down the li=ne than any number of parallels.
To answer your future question. It would be a bowman first auto. The rookie prints from each set is watered down. The issue with the topps now is that elly might have 10 topps now cards this year. Every highlight will probably be a topps now. I probably would have bought 1 if it had a rookie label on it. ‘Call Up’ is not a good long term look to me
I hope not. Hate when they use the same image on different sets. Wander Franco Bowman Chrome SP image variation was cool until they used the same image on his Stadium Club Chrome.
I'd say these are better targeted towards the memorabilia market than the sports card market. Completely agree with your points, but I don't think they would ever win the hearts of card collectors. However, it does make me wonder what Topps could do with the timeless moments (Panini) / timeless memories (Upper Deck) inserts
I think biggest thing going against Topps Now cards are that they for the most part are made to print and not pack pulled. People are addicted to the chase and until low numbered parallel's /25 or less become boring and not worth anything in a PSA 10 or the game used Topps Now stuff brings 10x what said parallel does most collectors will always go for rare pack pulled over semi-rare made to order Topps Now stuff.
I have a randy moss pylon piece relic from his 1st touchdown in the nfl as a rookie on the Vikings! Super sick an i agree an have been screaming it from the rooftops in comments gw on card autos FTW an #StarsNgoatsOverJoeBlows 😆😂
People have treated these like a PRC Bowman. It's not a first Bowman and it's not viewed as a real rookie card. Once the real rookies come out no one cares about the Topps Now card.
Not a fan of Topps now. Most cards are bought up in seconds by scalpers. Would be better if they created the set as the year went on and the after the WS released it as a product to open giving everyone a chance to buy packs. As it stands now all cards are bought up in seconds and on ebay a few moments later for double the price.
Problem is its gonna take way too long to get these cards if it takes really 6 months loses all the juice !!! If it took maybe few weeks thats different people forget what happened after few weeks in sportscard market what do u expect 🤔 to happen by the time u recieve it guy has 6 months to go cold hitting or get injured or not be realivent in terms of cards ....we all know sometimes guys get hot maybe few weeks a year if your lucky 🤔
You’re starting to sound like Geoff Wilson. Only time will tell if the Topps Now has any respect. People (the herd) are taught to hate Topps Now cards.
Just another money grab taking advantage of hype. Topps Now and Panini Instant will never hold major future value. Great for quick flip potential to people with FOMO who are priced out on his 1st autos. Smart move by these companies to squeeze out as many dollars as they can from people that get caught up in "the moment"
100% underrated, even if they print to order 70k of a card- now a days that’s still 10X less than other mass produced cards. Plus many Topps Now come out before their other RCs and they tend to capture amazing moments
