  • There's not too many people I know that are into our content that don't already know the story of Cerro Gordo, one of California's most important historic mining towns. Brent Underwood and his UA-cam channel, Ghost Town Living, has gained a huge following and is by now pretty well known.
You've likely seen the road up to Cerro Gordo featured on that show, mainly due to two separate freak storms that washed out large sections of the road.
On our visit in September of this year, the road was in excellent shape. We found the drive up quite easy actually.
The main issue for some will probably be the heights and overall scales. There are a few steep drop offs, but for us, the views were some of the best in California.

I’ve been up that road a few times now in my lifetime . I’m a huge fan of Brent & what he’s been doing to try to bring his Town back to life & I actually knew Mike Patterson & Toni Stewart before they both unfortunately passed away many many years ago. My riding buddies and I actually met Robert the caretaker of the town while Mike was unhealthy one year & staying with family down in Lone Pine & we got a full tour of the original California Hotel before it unfortunately burnt to the ground shortly after Brent’s purchase of Cerro Gordo . When my wife & I saw his video about the loss & how much it affected him I cried at home watching it as well . Kudos to you & to him on both your channels for showcasing areas that most people may never get the chance to see and experience first hand . My wife & I are planning a trip back up there to hopefully see the finished Hotel once it’s finished and stay if it’s possible ( and not booked for years in advance ) . Stay safe out on your travels Glenn.😎👍

That's so cool that you met with the former owners and the caretaker! How fortunate! How much different would you say the town was then compared to now (from what you see from videos)?

@ Oh it’s changed a lot , based on videos I’ve been seeing. My last time up there was in 2009 when my Buddy Dan & I rode up from our camping spot at base of Mt.Whitney across the valley . We took our Dual -sport Motorcycle’s up that time . I’ve made the trip in my ‘91 Suzuki Samurai and in my ‘02 GMC Sierra Crew cab , and by far had the most fun on the bikes , though by the time we came back down it was getting pretty Damn cold & we actually got snowed on before making it all the way back to my Toy-hauler trailer . Some of Dan’s mom’s home made clam chowder sure hit the spot that evening as she insisted we took some on our trip that year . We also rode up to Horseshoe Meadows the next Day on that side of Valley from camp , & I highly recommend you try that road if you’ve not been up it . We pulled out on an overlook above the Owens Valley & actually got the extreme privilege to WAVE at a pilot of a military jet as he Literally flew by us at eye level only about 2-300 ft away !!! When you can wave eye to eye from a motorcycle seat to a jet fighter you KNOW you just had an EPIC DAY . 😎👍👍

@ On one more note here Glenn , if you EVER feel the need for a Travel Partner To explore some more remote locations next year I should hopefully have some free travel time …. I’ll keep following your videos and if needed mention it and we can figure out something. I’m an experienced Off -roader & live here in San Diego , and have been through most of our Western states in my lifetime, but there’s a Ton of places I’ve yet to explore . Can’t hurt to have a “ Travel buddy “ with a fully equipped vehicle out in extreme environments sometimes just in case . C-ya , and stay safe as I always say . 🤞

You didn't show the worst part of the road. Looked pretty tame given roads I've been on.

I thought it was very tame, and in very good shape. No road damage to speak of. I’ll have a full format video coming out next year about the drive up there which has more detail. Hard to squeeze a lot of detail into these dang shorts! 😅
