I had the same problem at one point. The contactor was the cause, it was stuck on the closed position. Good video. We have to thank the guys who take time to share information.
I would suspect the wire was like that from the factory. It just took years of vibration and insulation degradation to finally short it out. Good troubleshooting logic and info. Thanks!
Thanks for your posting I checked my capacitor and yes I had a dead mouse across the capacitor I cleaned it off and by gosh it now works perfectly. So grateful for your insights. Thanks again
Great fix Dave. That's a new one for me too. In my experience, this situation has always either blown the low voltage fuse or tripped the breaker. Thanks for sharing!
I appreciate you posting this video. My problem was actually the Contactor. I am in Florida and ants seem to love electrical boxes and that includes the A/C Shut off and pretty much any place that is dark and protected. I found the electrical connection area of the Air Conditioner filled with ants and it appears that a couple of unlucky ants got between the contacts and when the thermostat energized the contactor relay the ants got fried and stuck the contacts together. Luckily it is winter in Miami and I was leaving for the weekend so I didn't need A/C and had time to order a new contactor and a spare capacitor (they don't seem to like the heat down here either). If this would have been August I bet I could have pried the contacts apart and it would have worked long enough to order a new one but luckily I didn't have to find that out. Thanks Again!
You helped me take care of my 92 year old mother’s Air conditioner that wouldn’t shut off. The aged electrical contactor was stuck in the down position. I will be replacing it thanks to you.
Great video, I just had a hockey puck style safety switch and condensate pump installed inside my condo.I noticed the next day, my fan outside runs all the time with a/c off ? , and the lines are freezing up.I'm thinking they didn't wire it up correctly, I'm calling the HVAC company, to come back to see if they caused the problem, or maybe it's just a coincident . Thank you for helping me with the video !!!
I’m glad I watch this because I have a carrier unit that the condensing fan motor keeps running, and the thermostat is satisfied in the blower fan motor in the furnace is shut off. However, I replaced today the capacitor that was bad, but the condensing motor now stays running and is never satisfied and shut off. I also checked the contact block and the contacts are in perfect shape. I also had the other day refrigeration guy come in at 11 ounces of refrigerant, that’s all it was low. So I don’t understand why the condensing fan motor continues to run???? If I turn The thermostat to off it Drops the coil out on the contactor. I also Took out the condensing fan motor when I went to get a new capacitor. I mentioned that because the video showed the wire that was shorted to the frame but in this case the wires were fine no shorts to ground.
dude you save me....this one video was the reason mine was doing the same thing.....wire melted on canister all i had to do was tape and separation witn zip ties....keep doing your thing dude....i bought new contactor which was defective from amazon....and a capacitor and i had a new defrost board from years back....
Good job Tshooting! So im dealing with a condensor fan that started running slowly constantly with Tstat off, its been in heat cycle for 2 months. im guessing maybe the cap is bad or a short. Gonna go out there in the morning and inspect thanks for posting.
If its a lennox the defrost board starting off new out the box can have the defect of internally having yellow and red bridged when its suppose to be seperate circuit
How funny it's my Goodman has Same issue Compressor turned On and Off. ...even i changed New Contactor single Pole as Original. Oh boy I have to LOOK for the SHORT too😮😔
Why is there no rubber grommet in the sheet metal hole? I'm not an AC tech but I am an electronics engineer. I'd never have wires going through sharp sheet metal without some type of plastic or rubber grommet.
@@ApartmentMaintenancePro a customer called saying this was their issue, I asked if the batteries had been changed in their thermostat, they told me they had. The first thing I checked was the thermostat and I noticed corroded old batteries, so some new ones went in and the confesor fan stopped running upon receiving the new signal.
I have this same problem on a Guardian 5 ton unit. All the wiring looks fine and all connections are tight. Could it possibly be a bad contactor? Or what else could cause this. The fan seems to be getting 110v from somewhere because it only turns slowly and heats up to 130* until the compressor kicks on and brings the fan up to full speed, then the motor cools off.
I'm having this problem and I can't figure it out. I replasterered the motherboard, and it does exactly the same thingI replaced the contactor and the same I've checked all the wires and no shorts. Is it possible for the copasitator to keep it running.

Dave, this problem plaques my condenser as well. Now I'll look for frayed wires. Thanks dude... yours is the only video I've found on this subject.

Excellent video, great job looking for the culprit.
Very cool that you did the troubleshooting directly on camera
I had this issue on my Bryant plus 80 Conditioner, and i agree with this guy about swap out the CONTACTOR, IT WAS STUCK ON
Great job. Glad you searched for the main issue. And, not just changed out contactor. Thanks for the video it will Definitely help me.

Great job...visual inspect is always first...
I loved the troubleshooting. It helped me check off what it could be.

It’s getting constant power somehow. Possibly miswired

I have seen heat pumps back feed lv from the relays inside and do this as well..Paint pens work great to label the units also.
Right on Carl thanks for the input!
please explain about back feeding to the air handler relay?

Why didn’t you put in a rubber grommet? The problem will eventually happen again.
great gaddamit work buddy i have the same issue currently .in chicago ,thanks !!

Mine is strange, I turned the heating on and it's just not stopped running now for about 2 weeks. I'm gonna figure out how to fix it now.
Yes i hate those single pole contactors have to be extra careful
nice work Mark Ruffalo

Same problem found shorted fan wire
Good find!
My compressor stays running for about a minute or so after the inside unit turns off. Any idea what it could be?
Contactor could be arcing welding itself shut. Of course, this is just a guess that could be wrong
Nice job, thank you.
This saved me! Mine turned out to be the contactor like the post below, very much appreciated!! Sub'd/liked!!
great fix.thanks for sharing
Wow, good find!
Thank you!!
I used markers but I label inside power block boxes
I'd rather see that than markers exposed to the outside. Paint pens and markers will last maybe a few years before fading when outside.
Mine the thermostat moves itself to 65 keep running what is it
Bro, u have a welded contactor.
You got it bro
Excellent

Thanks very good
Would this make the inside fan blower run continuously as well?
No, but a bad relay or thermostat would
Thank you
Why it didn't tripped the breaker? Since it was a short to ground?
Breaker is far away sometimes if they are far enough it won't trip.
@@carlgreen2232 mine is doing the same thing it kicks the breaker when u turn on the air and the outside unit breaker kicks
I got the same problem but capacitor is replaced and it’s still doing it
It's more than likely the contactor.
