How to set up a mixer for live streaming | Yamaha MG12XU Virtual Walkthrough
Вставка
- Опубліковано 29 вер 2024
- I regularly get asked what people need to do to use their mixer with multiple inputs and outputs to live stream and separate game sound from Discord/voice chat or from music, so I put together this "virtual walkthrough" of how you might use the Yamaha MG12XU mixer to route your audio sources for streaming.
These general principles will apply to most mixers - just account for the available sub-mixes, aux sends, etc. on your specific mixer.
✖ NOTE: Yes, I'm aware you can achieve similar results with a lot of patience and some software, such as VoiceMeter Banana or Virtual Audio Cable. Here's a tutorial on that from Battle(non)sense: • Gameplay Capture - How...

Is there any way to separate discord audio, game audio and mic audio to multiple tracks with it? like voicemeeter
If they're going to different physical inputs on the mixer then they're already separated
Yes but when i set MG-XU as output where do I plug my headphones to monitor both inout and playback when recording?? Exp: I can hear drums, bass etc when im laying down guitar... only the guitar via headphones in monitor jack (logic pro x)
Can you put Surround 5.1 Dolby Pro logic ii and 7.1 Surround on obs to get better Audio quality out of your retro console games.
This was the most confusing video on connecting a mixer that I've ever watched. I appreciate you trying to help but this was way over my head
no it was just badly executed - no actual plug through diagram so not you!
I agreed
This what I feel about every mixer setup video right now 🤣🤦🏾♂️
doing anything with a dual pc setup is soo complicated, i have been trying to do research because i want to upgrade to a dual pc stream setup but everything related to a dual setup is too complicated, makes my head hurt, its making me not want to upgrade to a dual pc setup and there really isnt a full detailed guide on how to set everything up. 😓😪
can i use a cable that have xlr in one end and usb soundcard in the other end ? and connect the xlr to the mic innput in the mixer and the usb end to my computer?
No
This mixer is awesome, but I had a lot of trouble shooting two outputs to the same PC - even with a sound card installed. I did this to separate the MIC from the Stereo output, but I could never get it to work.
My solution was to send the Aux output to a set of headphones that contain just the gaming/streaming sounds
Then have the stereo output sent to the streaming PC that cointained the gaming/streaming sounds AND the mic.
Just a heads up for those planning to do this. This is definitely a cheaper solution than the Sound card, and for me the Sound card solution didn't work anyway.
Did not expect to find you here, weary traveler.
So why do you not recommend using the USB?
I'm guessing the same reason this other youtuber gives, take a look at what he says about USB audio (starts at 1 minute mark) but warning the rest of the video is mainly him complaining about other issues on the board (some fair and some wrong) ua-cam.com/video/r7F1DmXyPIk/v-deo.html
The bottom line is, USB audio is clean and easy to work with, but it is very quiet in general. It is very limiting in terms of how you can use it. This is a "USB mixer", but you have the option to forego the USB connection for your audio signal and use the mixer in a more traditional way, by wiring up one of the physical channels on the board. That gives you a LOT more options in how the volume, EQ and effects (like compression, limiting, reverb etc) are applied.
would love a remake of this video. a full run connected, clarifying the intel
The one thing I hate about audio is that it's so much easier to understand what to actually do when you have the physical object. Great video, nonetheless!
Are there any cheaper options like this, where you can have at least 2 different audio tracks coming from different outputs on the board? Also, if you could make a graph on how to set something like this up, that'd be super helpful :D
This video is absolute garbage. We gotta start issuing licences before some people can open their mouths!
Except it's not and has helped plenty of people and gets referenced when helping other streamers all the time.
Guess we gotta issue licenses before people can comment :X

Good morning, thank you for making the very informative video. I'm not clear on one step, can the white fx/aux 2 knob handle both functions at the same time? Let me explain: if there are monitors connected to the aux2 output on stage and I operate the white knob, do I raise/lower the channel signal or increase/decrease the effect? I understood that I can only route the effect to the aux1 output. I hope I have explained myself clearly and thank you in advance for your reply.
i came here to learn becausei just bought a mixer not this one but something similar but my brain melted and i feel even more dumb i wish there was a device that just tuned itself to your voice so you don't have to mess with knobs i'm not a sound genius i'm terrible with audio i just want to sound good in my videos and streams. :/
Can i use this mixer with ZOOM? Can i use this mixer to share a video in zoom, and also hear the sound to the same video shared in zoom, to the mail hall with other people? Or do i risk a feedback eco?
This makes no sense. Been trying to set this up for three days. Draw pictures. What cords, where (and how many) go from mixer to each computer. Do we connect lines 5/6 to one computer and 7/8 to other computer along with XLR L&R on and 1/4 inch L/R to the other? I have all necessary lines on each computer.
Didn't work good. I'm a streamer. I use microphone with +48v, phantom is send in 1 to 7/8. Elgato (hd60s) is use in Line 9/10 because i cant have +48v (it will be destroy them, also for ipad/pc) ... i use Discord with new soundcard 48khz in 11/12 (because you need to use all in 48khz for troubleshooting/ all in 48khz...) . Line 7/8 and 9/10 don't have GAIN bouton! No gain bouton and no +48 on each line...
I have this, but I can not figure out how to record say a guitar track, then add drums, or vocals all from a mic recording in my living room. I am so confused can you help ?
I just got this same mixer, it replaces my Marantz SR7000 Receiver that doesn't have a USB port. Since I listen to music & vids mostly online with my laptop.I want to connect my Laptop to the USB & don't know yet if I must download stuff & configure,, which I will need help with I don't know how to download & save or any such Tech.. So thanks none of you guys showing this Mixer has yet to actualize somebody may just want a Mixer instead of a Pre-Amp
O som da Yamaha mx12xu está baixo no zoom. Como se ela não estivesse captando o som e mandando ara o notebook de forma correta.
O que fazer?
I have an MG12XU, and I need help with it, but this video went waaaayy over my head. LMAO
Hi I have a pair of 32ohm headphones but can't get them to work via phones input?
Any ideas?
Ta
Steve
Sir does it need amplifier to connect with speaker????
I wish someone would actually SHOW US WHERE THE CABLES ARE GOING.
I checked out when he said “I don’t physically have one in person.” 🤨👎🏾
I wish you could do a review on the Mackie ProFX8v2 Id like to know how to live mix with it.
Can I just send everything through the USB instead of using cables?
Wow so you just don’t use an interface that way to perform into the computer/OBS?
Please, this video is confusing to me. Is it possible to have a chat with you one on one? Thanks
I had this mixer and did a PowerPoint (which I never published) using multiple consoles and going into obs . Now upgraded to Beringer X Air 18 input mixer
Does this software works with mg10xu and can it connect to obs streaming
how to set wires.....means headphones, phones, etc.its incomplete information
Hey guys can anybody tell me where is an insert on this model mixer? Thanks
What about this scenario:
- Yamaha MG12XU is connected to my Stream PC via USB and working as sound card on Stream PC
- channel 1 and 2 are my mics
- channel 9-10 is receiving my Gaming PC sound
NOW: I`m using OBS Studio for my stream... I want to have in my OBS both mic signals as well as my gaming PC signal, HOWEVER I don`t want to hear my mics on my monitor speakers, ONLY my game PC sound (gameplay), is that possible with this mixer (it is not possible on my Yamaha MG10XY atm..) ?
you will need type A to B USB cable for your computer set up
Thanks for this!
How to increase the treble ?
Thanks!
How would you turn the AUX 1 mono to be stereo ?
i think my brain just exploded have onboard audio on streaming pc and on board on gaming pc plus sound card on gaming pc. will i still need another sound card.
Can I plug a sound blaster G6 into mixer MG10XU to push dt990 250 ohm ?
You have a great radio voice over voice 😊
Is it possible to output something to both the main mix and the secondary output? (Would pressing both routing buttons work for this or is it limited to 1 output per channel?)
This is the exact same question I'm wondering too. User manual didn't help either. The ST button on 1-2grp fader might work as a send to main mix, if that's the case we could pseudo send channels to both outputs? Again, just guessing, no facts here.
Hello,
We are using OBS studio for live streaming in our church. When we record worship session the audio in Facebook sounds raw without any effects in it. It does not comes as we hear from speakers. We used it USB 2.0 in back side of Yamaha mg20xu. Any suggestions please.
Sooo..... If I use this Yamaha as my primary sound card on my Win10.... Can I have all 4 MIC signals in my system sound so I can send it to my OBS software and HOW ? I need it for my podcast 4 ppl show... I`m using atm my ZOOM-UAC2 usb3.0 sound card with 2 mic-inputs... Tnx!
Very poor explanations! he is doing this based on pictures and no hands on hardware and neither talks about potential issues. poor one.
I do talk about potential issues though?
Xenyx qx1202 or mg10xu, which one is better. I am building small home studio setup. Already have scarlet 2i2 interface. I am refering fx effects and compressions. Plz suggest....
If you are using it to set up mixing levels for the computer's DAW recordings what is the best level to set the main stereo out on the headphones? Say a pair DT770 Pro at 80ohms?
NICE ONE CHEERS
why don't you just use line 11/12 over USB instead of plugging your pc into a channel with jacks and then sending a mix into a crappy PCI soundcard with jacks. the mixer has a high quality 192khz USB audio interface which is bidirectional in the sense that it can record data to the pc and send music from the pc into the mixer at the same time. making the need for send and return with jack cables completely redundant
If you want a single stereo input into the mixer, yes. Most of the streamers watching this video want tertiary mix outputs to separate voice chat, music, etc.
@@EposVox thanks for the feedback. I just found it strange that you never spoke about the USB mix at all, but I understand the use case better now. Thx
When i put aux send 1 to my camera mic in on my eos 7d mark ii. if i dont start record it audio is clear when i record it audio totally buzzing i need help
So with the Yamaha MG10XU you pretty much cant get your Game Audio and Mic split up?
for easy editing per track after you recorded instead of having them both in the same track.
Or just update Windows 10 and use Voicemeeter Banana with the new Windows sound features to give yourself two virtual audio channels to route your apps to. Sure you lose physical controls but they aren't exactly used all the time anyways. Just get the audio to a comfortable level, keep it there, and you're good to go.
Zacharmander I got boicemeeter my self but not to sure if I’m using it right if you could or wouldn’t mind you think you could help me set it up cuz I was about to just buy a mixer and give up on the voicemeeter lol
That would be the case for a gaming stream, but for a live music stream, those physical controls away from the keyboard could become invaluable :)
How do I get rid of the buzzing noise in my headset? Doesn't matter if I run a duel pc set up, or even just the ps4 pro I still get that buzzing hissing static like sound. I bought 2 different grounding units. I bought the PAC SNI-1/3.5 3.5-mm Ground Loop Noise Isolator Works with iPod/Zune/iRiver and, BESIGN Ground Loop Noise Isolator for Car Audio/Home Stereo System with 3.5mm Audio Cable. Neither of these helped! Any advice? Also I use the Yamaha MG10XU
OK ! I will show you how to stream live you say ( expecting through a phone or Ipad perhaps but ! nothing ) what was that all about ?
Really interested in this mixer if I find a way to auto-duck the usb/pc audio with an external compressor unit.
Would that be possible? I was thinking of routing the usb audio to aux1 and all mics to aux2, then both aux1 and aux2 to a compressor (mics to the sidechain, usb audio to main input) and finally connect the main output of the compressor to an empty channel on the Yamaha. The compressed audio would probably be mono though (because it was routed through an aux).
I have had this thing for over a year now and it is so bloody good. Although I am confused in that mine is the same model name yet I don’t have those sliders down the bottom of the unit
You were saying you need a special input to send the audio to your pc?? If it is anything like mine then your pc will receive the audio through usb, and the description of this unit you are looking at does say it is usb like my one
usb all the way... unless it has some glitchy drivers and possible problems, that's what it's meant for! ive also used two soundblaster usb cards over the years - the X-Fi Surround 5.1 Pro and Omni Surround 5.1, very similar cards and neither of them have had a single usb issue, i wouldn't expect any from a professional mixer as well.
but you know ... better take it from someone who's actually using one, some people say the usb output is low etc... maybe it's not so good...
DarkRubberNeck possible you have the mg10xu? That model doesn’t have sliders
When we raise or lower the MONO fader to adjust the house sound, it also changes the in-ear monitor signal. We don't want that to happen. Is there a way to fix this problem? Can anyone recommend a user forum for the Yamaha MG24/14? Thank you!
Watching this without audio
couldnt i use a focusriite scarlett solo as an interface and connect it that way?
voicemeeter potatoe is a pain it only took me 14 hours to figure it out, thought maybe id just look into this yamaha
Halo dude.. this unit can do song mixing and mastering for professional audio? And create a good audio?
yaboi aj So I can for sure use this for dual pc setup connected to streaming/recording pc via usb????Im lost on how to connect my headset.I have astro a40 and love my headphones, will prefer to still use them.Do you know how??Can I use the usb output to connect my astro mixamp???
lol still dont get it
As a recording engineer with many years studio and live experience I found this amusing (especially that it was virtual, as in you don't even have one to show, with no real explanation of signal level matching etc). I completely understood what you were saying but I can see how inexperienced users would be baffled. Meanwhile, in the interim I am certain there have been a half dozen mixers come on the market tailored specifically to podcasting, streaming etc. that make this all moot. FWIW, the MG12UX is a great mixer for home recording and live functions that don't require mixing a ton of sources. Mic preamps are first class, has PFL, phantom power, nice form factor, dirt cheap.
For context: at the time the only mixers/interfaces with WDM multitrack were $500+, completely inaccessible, and only a couple were on the market. Doing it this jank way was the norm
I’m using Yamaha Mgp32x help me to connect it to my pc. Thanks
I’m new to this audio stuff and I want to get 1 for my stream and be able to mix stuff on the fly if any 1 here can help me with what I’m trying to do and listen to what I’m trying to do msg me and I’ll give you my discord also if appreciate the help for real
Fail
Ok ima a complete noob to this I ordered this mixer a cloud lifter and a sm7b if I wanted to put discord/teamspeak and game and Spotify on there own channels so I can live mix them on my live stream do I need addition cables for that? I only have a xlr cable for my mic atm also if you can explain the setup for me plz let me know I’ll give my discord channel I’d appreiecite it so much
can you use on board audio from your motherboard, and a sound card at the same time? using a Asus ROG Maximus X Formula and a Creative Sound Blaster Audigy PCIe RX 7.1 Sound Card, can i use them simultaneiously? Currently have a Yamaha MG10XU and utilizing the USB connection, but i cannot get rid of the static that OBS finds when i add it as an audio source
Hello
I have a problem
I work with a dual stream system but when I have the game sound in my OBS then everyone in the TS hears the sound of the game.
I have USB of the mixer on the Stream PC can it be?
Must it in the game PC
Hello, thanks for explaining. One thing you do not explain is the thing I want to do.
I want to play two sounds (click track + music) from a computer which are sent out from two different buses from my music program. The music track I want to go out through main mixer to the speakers in stereo while the click + music needs to go to headphones, I understand that I then have to go through monitor jacks and use both to the headphones using a revert splitter.
My issue is that I dont understand if the mixer can understand that I am actually sending two different tracks via USB or not?
I don't explain it because it's not possible with this mixer. This mixer only provides a stereo mix via usb, both ways.
@@EposVox I understand that now. I need two separate signals going into mixer. I need something like the Zoom Livetrak 12 :)
Thank you ever so much for the tutorial, there's not many tutorials that concentrate on separate channels into the mix.
I'm planning to start up a 'live' singer/songwriter music stream later this year or early next, depending on how 'life' gos, I'd like to bend your ear a little if I may, as there are hardly any tutorials using this or the MG10XU for live music rather than gaming that I can find. So I'm finding it very difficult to learn and work everything out.
With the lowest possible latency in mind:
Would this one or the MG10XU be a better fit for a solo artist?
- Two-Three mics (maybe more, especially if I have a friend around)
- Electro Acoustic and Electric guitars
Or would Voicemeeter Banana to Pro Tool to OBS be a better solution?
(Though I imagine relying on software 'live' may present extremely annoying things to happen)
I presume that my Focusrite 18i20 would be fine for the line inputs since it has plenty of them?
I also use a Boss RC300, so I guess that would go straight into the mixer?
Would OBS recognise all of the channels from the 18i20 or is there a limitation that would require me to loop the 18i20 back into the mixer, then out again into the 18i20?
(Possible feeback issues?)
Is there anything else I've not thought of?
Again, thank you so much for the video, it has certainly cleared a few things up :)
You can’t never be a teacher sir. Tutoring should never be a casual chat.
you didnt really mention that you could use the red and white RCA style connection for an ipod or something for music with a cable adapter. and you didnt mention that this board has some standard preset effects like reverb and flang that can be added to any of the channels. and adjusted individually with the FX knobs
Thanks for this video. On the aux sends, they are summing outputs unfortunately, so if you send a stereo channel, you cant simply send it to aux 1 and 2 and get extra stereo outs. From studying the schematic , as it sums at the channel end you could cross patch with another stereo channel and so get a stereo out using aux send 1 for one channel and aux send 2 for the other. The sum takeoff point is before the pan control. Finally i am not aware that you can run multiple sound cards simultaneously as you have to tell your daw and windows what to sync to.if there is a way im not aware of it. Thanks for video.
How can I make sure my windows/game sound comes in through a channel using a 6.3mm split to 3.5 jack connected to my pc line in and my discord sound via the usb channel 11/12? Also do I need to connect a headset to my mixer to get all the sounds back in my headset (now I have a wireless headset but that doesn't work with the mixer. I am having a hard time figuring it out :).
Most main board have a line input in the back of the computer. But for a laptop it is worse, there you must have an external sound card.
Why not use USB interface?
?
Could you do this for the MG10XU please? I'm looking to buy it but don't really know how to rig it all up thanks - Also I see you are into microphones so check out the MXL 990 @eposvox
Hello,
Can you please explain a workaround for mix-minus for Yamaha MG10XU mixer as there is no aux sent, just can't figure out to make it work even using FX-Send (number 15 on user's manual)
Thank you in advance!
I want to buy this. The one question I have what happens if an input is off and the volume for that channel is up. Would I still hear it through the headphone? I know it woudnt go through stream since it off.
What is the advantage of having a hardware mixer compared to just using a software mixer like VoiceMeeter banana?
This..
Appears to only output 2 of the inputs out of USB... I'm trying to mix live music for my stream and need the overall mix to send to the pc.
So I have 1 pc for now planning on expanding to a 2 pc setup. I basically want a master out to send to the stream, I want 1 output to the gaming pc if I need to talk in game, and I want another out to the streaming pc for discord or anything else that I could Isolate from having to hear music or the game. I also have desk monitor speakers. I was thinking I could do the main out to the stream. Aux 1 would go to the streaming PC as the secondary in for discord etc and aux 2 to the gaming pc. Id use the phones and monitor out for my speakers and headphones. My question is, is there a better way to route this kind of setup
So does the grey mute button actually mute the headphones output? Like example does it mute the other people talking in ur headphones
I’m just trying to mute other players voices in my stream
my dad just got one and he asked me how to turn up/down echo? can you tell me how please
Great video, I've had this mixer for a while but just use it very basically to mix a few completely separate audio sources (2 PC's, gaming systems) but wasn't sure how I could get a mix without my music, just game audio / voice for speedruns. Now I have some idea, thank you very much! Lots of other great / very useful information as well!
is it possible to connect ps4 (by converter toslink-rca and rca-jack 6.3) to this audio mixer and record sound as another track in obs?
Regarding the connection between the microphone to a mixer, do you need to connect the microphone to the external preamplifier before to a mixer? Thanks for your input.
Worst explanation on the Internet..........zzzzzz
I mean, it's not.
Love the presonus studio live that you have on the back 😍😍😍
Yeah, I will need to watch this video a few more times. I have not used anything like this before, and am unsure if I need one at this time. It is informative, which is why I will refer back to it a few more times.
Damn. U just minfucked me hard bro. So what do I do ? I wanna use this mixer for streaming/recording
Sir how can we set two effects simultaneously on mg16xu?
I was told by someone that using a computers on-board line-in audio is not a good option because the audio decoder wouldn't be able to handle all the signal input from the mixer. Am I wrong in that thinking?
EDIT:
I feel like while this is all good on paper, I feel like your creating to many points of failure with this kind of routing. Not only that, it's pretty confusing still to understand even for someone like me that's done live stuffbefore.
Not many points of failure, it's a setup I've ran many times. And that first bit makes zero sense. analog audio is analog audio, there's no encoding
i got the mg10xu :D so i know this video is going to be hella helpful
YES dude!!!
One issue that I have is I can't get Obs to see the stereo out for the mixer, I tried the line in on both the motherboard and sound card, but nothing. It show up in the recording tab for windows but the levels don't move...
Forgot to mention, current running one PC at moment, second system is recycled
Can you queue things with the channel fader down like a dj mixer?
Do I need sound card, if this mixer connect to PC via USB cable ?
So, how do you route all channels on a live mixer that can be processed by plugins in the computer avoiding external hardware?
Hmmm... I have this mixer and I use the USB as input. No problems for me (or maybe my ears aren't good enough to hear any of the hissing). I don't like using the USB for output as well though, because on your computer the input and output have the same name which is confusing to a prefer using the analog out. Also I got away with not using an extra sound card. I use my motherboard's mic input but I dial the level way down in the system sound settings.
That being said I wish you posted this video like 2 months ago. It took me sooo long to figure these things out myself.
how do you connect via usb? can you please help?
Guess I bought the wrong Yamaha mixer....
