I wanted chaegyeong to end up with the prince because they truly love each other but there's something in my mind that I also want chaegyeong to end up with the king. They truly had some chemistry and at some scenes the king made my heart flutter as I saw his sincerity as how he expressed her deep love to chaegyeong. If not because of the late king, king yung will not end up that way. Huhu

I'll never understand how Chae Kyung ditched the King (Who literally listened and took her advice on being a better king, and saved her, and was merciful to her, and was truthful most of the time to her, and pointing out how terrible Yeok was) For Lee Yeok (Who didnt keep his promise, and lied to her for some time, and etc.) LIKE OMG, the King literally would've given the world for her, and he didnt lie to her as much as Yeok did... I mean, Chae Kyung even saw that yeok had many red flags, but.... SHE STILL WENT FOR HIM?!?!? Like, I understand the King stepped over the line a few times, but that was because hes like emotionally scarred.... and I know this is based on Historical facts and all... but... WHYYYY. If you ask me, I would've ditched Yeok on the spot... I hope they make like... a spinoff series... but it is like an alternate au, where Chae Kyung fell in love with the King
The king was the most honest with her but he was mad, dangerous, bipolar and cruel. And I think he has not a lot of romantic feelings for her. I think she was his family but the fear of losing her twisted him and made him possessif. A man in love or convoiting her would have touched her. The king will never touch Chae Kyung and will even manage to stop himself from kissing her the only time he is taken with lust. This is proof to me that the main feeling towards her was family affection and friendship. The Prince sincerely loves Chae-Kyung and has an ideal and values close to her. However, he will not stop lying to her, involving her in plots and political intrigues, putting her and her family in danger and let them facing impossible dilemmas. He will also be unable to protect her. In the end, both men loved her in their own way, both men hurt her, and both lost her. None of them really deserved her, in the end. At least she was able to live a freer and happier life than she would have had in the palace, no matter which of the two she chose.
Both brothers were victims of their up brings parents! Chea kyung and Yeok were friends and developed a feelings for each other before the situation parted them.
I have same feelings with you. Still couldn't understand why Chaekyung chose to support Yeok and lied the king so many times. I do not say that the King is perfect and have good personality but I can feel strongly his sincere love for Chaekyung. I also dont think he just considered Chaekyung as his family but his one-and-only true love in this life. The king deserves better I would say.
Damn, this really gave me a new perspective of the song TToTT I recently watched the re-runs in KBS World, it takes a second watch to understand the King's POV.
Given the ending, i felt it was just bitter. To me it showed that, unless cruel and able to ruthlessly take control, as the King was, the you're just a puppet of the acheming officials and high ranking eunuchs, as the prince became. Terrible in both cases.

The father is the one to blame why the king became a tyrant. Instead of uniting his two sons, the late king put division between them and played favorites with wives and children.
It was of the time and certainly in Ottoman and Moorish royal families the brother who took the crown would then slaughter his other brothers even if newborns to ensure there was no one to challenge him. The only reason kings, emperors, etc had harems and tons of kids was because of power. Daughters could be married off (sold really) for profit in alliances, lands, money and sons could be their replacement. If the sons near the top disappointed them, no risk to kill them because there were others to fill the gaps. Plus the harems were scheming nests of vipers so kids were often poisoned so you needed replacements in that way too. Frankly I would rather be poor than rich in that society. Oh and don't forget in China the girls even had to cope with the 'bound foot' era which basically crippled the females of the nobility and royals.

It was of the time and certainly in Ottoman and Moorish royal families the brother who took the crown would then slaughter his other brothers even if newborns to ensure there was no one to challenge him. The only reason kings, emperors, etc had harems and tons of kids was because of power. Daughters could be married off (sold really) for profit in alliances, lands, money and sons could be their replacement. If the sons near the top disappointed them, no risk to kill them because there were others to fill the gaps. Plus the harems were scheming nests of vipers so kids were often poisoned so you needed replacements in that way too. Frankly I would rather be poor than rich in that society. Oh and don't forget in China the girls even had to cope with the 'bound foot' era which basically crippled the females of the nobility and royals.
