henry martinez I'm fighting cancer as well and this is the first song I thought of. mostly asking for strength to beat it. I'll keep you in my prayers 😃
I’m listening to this today on 2/09/2023. Burt Bacharach just passed away. This song is just so powerful. Elvis can bring me to tears with this song. God Give Me Strength indeed!
When the violins swell just as Elvis sings "I want him to hurt ..." is such a grandmaster move. Lesser artists would think it too melodramatic. Great artists don't care -- they know the moment demands it.
This album, Painted from Memory, is one of my deserted island albums. R.I.P. to the great Burt Bacharach who died today. He influenced many record producers and musicians of the generation following his. Thankfully, his music lives on.
This is one of the best love songs ever. WOW! Elvis Costello delivers a song written by one of the best composers on the planet! RIP Burt Bacharach - thank you for all the incredible music...
One of the best goddamn love-gone-bad songs ever written. What an incredible collaberation between two such diverse yet prolific song writers. "Here comes those tears again - just when I was gettin' over you." God gives you strength!
God will give you strength, my friends. I fought breast cancer for two years and have just been given an “ all clear” before last Christmas. I never became angry or depressed. I went straight to acceptance. If you offer up your pain to the Almighty, and accept this sacrifice without doubting that He loves you, you will be rewarded with strength to overcome any pain, and you will withstand much more than you ever imagined you could ! In the end, it will make you stronger and better. You will discover what you are really made of. Sacrifice is the price we pay to be able to grow and to see that people love us and that we can be better humans than we ever imagined. Hang in there. It is, in fact, Grace from God.
Burt Bacharach had his share of heartbreak. He lost his daughter tragically. But he and Hal David and Elvis Costello always had the Genius to put into words and music how all of us have felt at one point or the other in our lives. Thank you, Burt, Hal and Elvis for sharing your gifts !

Now he’s gone, and thinking about Bach Bacharach’s amazing canon…sure every Dionne Warwick song takes breath away and there are many stunners…but for me this performance with Elvis Costello just sums it up like none other. Rest easy Burt…we’ll never forget you or the music.🎵🎶🕯️
My husband died last year. We were separated for a year during the time he became ill with cancer and I, hoping we would work things out, received a text message from his family the day after he died. I didn't even know he was sick. This song is therapy in a way.
Elvis Costello I had no idea how talented you are. You gave this song your entire heart, and I believe you. Bless you for sharing your talents with humanity. I am a new fan.
How many songs are there that make you cry every time you hear them? Bacharach is one of a dying breed of songwriters. And Costello rose far above the ranks of ordinary pop singer after tackling this piece.
Burt Bacharach , a genius of a generation. Will never be another one like him. He saw something in Elvis Costello of all people and Burt was right. Like I said , a genius.
The other versions are lovely in their way, but for me this is the only one that captures the sense of pain and despair that are in the lyric. Does he hit the notes perfectly, no, but that’s not what this is about. It’s the phrasing, the way he breathes the melody. Inspired
@@eliztomp What I first loved about Elvis starting in ‘77 was his lyrics and his vibe. Over the years he’s become my all-time favorite lyricist (certainly one of the best ever), but he’s my favorite singer too - and it’s because of exactly what you describe, the passion in his voice, the phrasings he uses, his breathing, his vibrato, the spectrum of emotions, the entire package of individual qualities put together that makes his voice what it is - almost always perfectly tailored (esp. in live performance) to the lyrics and music of the song he’s singing.
I’d play this on my guitar nightly while my dad was wrought with cancer. Didn’t really listen to the lyrics except for god give me strength. The emotion of Elvis brings me back. Thinking now maybe the “she” was his cancer. Bit of a stretch maybe but I know he is with god now and looking after all his loved ones
Probably the most consistent writer of our time to produce timeless classics one after another for forty years. Can't say enough great things about my favorite artist. Happy 64 Elvis!
I don't think ANYone has ever quite captured the end of love like Burt has. What an inCREDible Melody- and Elvis, despite a somewhat eccentric interpretation, really nails this song- the note he hits at 4.54 is a real heart-breaker.It seems there are very few songs of this caliber being written today, sadly.
The only thing to say about these artists and their collaboration is pure genius. I will never tire of listening to it or anything by these gentleman musicians.
When will another Genius composer like Bacharach or Costello arrive in the recording world again? Only McCartney and Elton are still alive. The other genius composers have gone to the next Life. Please, God, every new song and artist these days sings the same repetitive unmelodic, unmemorable tune with mundane repetitive lyrics. We can’t tell one song from the next.
These two were a legendary duo beautiful vocals and song writing 😢I’ve spent many nights listening to them when going through the bad times of my life. RIP BURT 🙏🏻
I never knew Costello could sing like this ,the whole combo is truly marvelous. So sad people never hear these sounds, although both artists at least have had success.
From "Welcome to the Working Week" to the Juliet Letters, and then onward, he grew as a musician and a singer. It's amazing that I got to see Elvis Costello in my lifetime. I owe him a great debt.
A lot of these comments assume that this album was a strict division of labor between Bacharach’s music and Costello’s lyrics because that was always Bacharach’s practice before this, and it had been Costello’s assumption beforehand also, but he was thrilled that Bacharach sought his collaboration on the music as well, as he’s equally talented at both. This song is mostly Costello’s music with the addition of Bacharach’s soaring bridge, and much of Painted From Memory they worked closely together on the music, often in the same room with two keyboards.
Simply beautiful....I always enjoyed watching Burt play, his facial expressions and how his whole body gets into the music....the album that he and Elvis collaborated on is fantastic....Rest In Peace Burt and thank you ~
This track not only gives me both tears of pain and joy, no matter what obstacles and discouragement I go to, I thank the lord and Elvis Cosello/Burt Bachrach for making this song possible that bring me comfort, closure and composure of my hardships times in life and thank God for this, because when you got God, you got a friend, and that's you! This song always reminds me of my parent's divorce and makes me cry every time I hear it. It just hits that nerve. In fact every song on Written From Memory hits that same nerve. It just goes to show Burt Bacharach wasn't all "sunshine & lollipops" in the Swinging Sixties.

Possibly my all time fave Bacharach number!.

Burt Bachrach was the master at knowing the right thing to do at the right time. He was an unmatched musical genius.
When I saw “Grace of My Heart” I chased this song down!!! This has Burt all over it! Collaborated with Costello, this CD is a masterpiece!
I did the exact same thing!!!
Same here. It's one of my favorite albums of all time.
That version from the sound track album by Kristin Vergard is my all time favorite,, though I like this one very much.
