  • Joe Rogan explains why MMA will "swallow" boxing as a sport. Clip is taken from an interview posted on Joe Rogan's official UA-cam channel circa 2008. 2023 has proved Rogan right in his prediction, with MMA seemingly dominating the social discourse while boxing has been condemned for its poor matchmaking.

MMA is also like that. They banned the Gracie's devastating technique of stabbing the back of the guy on top of you with the heels of your feet.
Banned grabbing the cage. Like you wouldn't do that irl if you had the chance.
Banned kneeing the guy if the guy has a knee on the ground.
    Banned rabbit punches.
Nobody fights bare knuckles. Gracie made a guy, much taller than him, almost cry with short punches to the face with barefists.
All these were a go in the beginning of UFC.

Anyone that trained anything at least a bit practical, even stuff like proper taekwondo or kyokushin is gonna be miles ahead of the average Joe just due to conditioning, footwork and confidence. But as a fighter you want to have different tools for different situations and that's why MMA is the best at that. You can have the meanest right hook in the world and that won't mean anything if someone puts you on the ground. You can think you're slick and that no one will put you in that situation, but life teaches humility constantly. The reverse is also true - a great wrestler will get messed up if he can't throw hands and comes upon someone who can. The point is to know your strengths and know your weaknesses, playing into the former and improving the latter. Cuz all of these things are sports, and while you can relate a lot of it to self defense it won't be a 1/1 correlation. All of these things are just tools.

Reason why boxing is the best in most scenarios because with boxing you have the tools to end the fight quickly while bringing the fight to the ground puts you in a vulnerable position to getting stomped on. People don’t fight fair in the streets, if they see you drop their boy they join in to back him up, in such situations boxing is your best bet.

Boxing is the standard. Don't you have to knock the champ out to get the belt?? That's how the saying goes lls. Boxing doesn't have to explain itself, it's the champ. If Dana can't stop being greedy and give fighters more $ than there can be an argument. Both sports fight for their life but boxers get paid more respectfully. I like how someone said boxing is a gentlemen's sport nd MMA is for warriors. Boxers are warriors also. But I like the sentiment. Basically once you kick someone or try to (a felony in some states lol) it's extremely personal. Can't be civil then

    • @kingartifex
      @kingartifex 5 місяців тому

@@Atlas365247 money is the only argument in favor of competing in boxing. And that's only because of age: boxing has been around for a lot longer and people in the 1920s didn't know better for a combat sport, its more rooted in western society so they have the "first mover advantage". Also, the general public is too lazy to learn about other techniques, they just want to see people punch each other.
I would argue though, if MMA fighters could pick and choose fights like they do in boxing, you would only have fighters with padded record who fight journeymen they are sure of beating. In the UFC dana decides, so in a way, the matchups are more interesting than jake pall who only fights people he knows he would win. And boxing is wayyyyyy more corrupt because of stuff like this. So much fight fixing and referee bias. There has been corruption also in MMA, but much less imo.
For a true martial artist who wants to know who can fight better (and not just punch in a specific way to score points), you have to evaluate all aspects of fighting, not "only punching". You could be better at punching than me, but I might be better at grappling or kicking. If you make a limited ruleset that says "nope, you can only use 1 tool" then you are basically measureing the outcome on one facet. It just makes more sense, on a scientific level, to have a more open ruleset like MMA.

Boxing is an art form that’s why it’s called martial arts. It’s not about getting in there and ripping each other apart over hatred. It is about testing each other to see who is more of a master of their art. Maybe some fighters really hate each other but thats not what it’s about. Better to learn how to get skillful with weapons based martial arts if self defense is what you’re aiming for. Or learn how to travel with a group of people. UFC’S MMA is also just a sport.

The only reason we saw Francis become champion in mma is because when he got to France he wanted to box and his trainers convinced him there was more opportunity in mma. Now francis has beaten one of the best boxers in the world and they didn't even give him his well earned victory. Tyson was downed viciously and he would have been destroyed by a hammerfist a second later if it was MMA. MMA will always be superior.

No, Rogan was *not* right. Boxing still makes TONS more money than MMA, it out-earns every other combat sport combined. Francis Ngannou left MMA to start boxing because that's where the money is. He earned four times as much money from an exhibition against Tyson Fury than he made in his entire UFC career.

Yeah Joe is right. Why limit yourself by having a gentleman's agreement to only use your hands, and call that sport? Oh wait that's the definition of the word sport....

I agree with this to a degree, but a lot of other combat sports besides MMA have limits. Even MMA if we'll be real, most rulesets don't allow tactics such as stomping or kicking the head of an opponent that pulls guard, rabbit punching is still considered bad, you can't elbow your opponent on the ground in a certain way, headbutts are still illegal, etc. But yeah, it gives a way bigger arsenal to fight with compared to boxing.

@@iseespeed5311yeah MMA has more opportunity to be entertaining especially if you came from watching boxing for years. But to say MMA is not also a silly agreement or more efficient is a dumb argument. They're both sports at the end of the day, it's not real fighting
Then again watching Ali fight is more entertaining than any UFC fight I've seen imo, and the entertainment lasts longer (that's the point of the big gloves). It's just modern boxing that's lacking, professional mma is organised so much better

Fury vs Ngannou might have been the nail in the coffin tbh. Ngannou for all intents and purposes has the same amount of experience as an amateur, and look what he did to the heavyweight champ.
