  • Rachel wanted to build a bookcase, so we built one together. Nice to have help.
    Filming with help doesn't quite go as planned as filming alone.
    The design of this one is very similar to one I built two years earlier:
    • Big box joined bookcase

      That's an understatement, she is very good and can actually follow and execute something when someone tells her something and knows how to touch and handle equipment, that's rare these days.. We have 1 chick at work and she starts crying when you tell her something because "she doesn't know how" when its basically common sense. Give a random chick a power drill most won't even know that you can can change the direction of rotation and most are too afraid too try because they might look stupid.

    As someone with, at best, marginally more experience than Rachel when it comes to woodworking, this reminded me how hard the craft really is for amateurs like us. Little things you don't even think about Matthias will elude our intuition. It ends up becoming a cycle where I don't do woodworking very often because I don't have the knack, but I also don't get the knack because I don't do it very often.

    • @PelleKuipers
      @PelleKuipers Місяць тому

      Just start working on small projects! I've been a woodworker for years but I do it in my spare time. All you need is time and patience. It took me years to be able to plan out stuff well, and to take my time at the rough stage (where you cut a lot). It saves so much time in the long run. And by going slow you also get way better at everything.

    Rachel ,you did a great job! Don't be worried about cutting off too little on a shelf , remember you can always cut more off, hard to add more back on! Mathias, be great to see how you made that last long drilling jig, especially getting the holes perfectly even all the way along! Keep these coming ! :)

    • @doughnut1107
      @doughnut1107 Місяць тому +2

      Because it is long, the holes don't have to be even. As long as you keep the orientation of the strip of holes the same, each level will match without the spacing having to be exactly on.

    • @rikkertkoppes
      @rikkertkoppes Місяць тому

      You can create a jig to create that jig: drill two holes in a piece of scrap, drill the first hole in the long jig, position the helper jig with a dowel in the first hole, drill the second hole, repeat.

  • @alfabsc
    @alfabsc Місяць тому +6

    Great project! Mission accomplished with almost no "marital strife". 😁 Two small suggestions from your distant cousin. 1. Put a spacer the same thickness as your table saw sled base so you don't have to reach around the saw blade to support your piece. 2. Feather boards on the fence of your router table will hold down your work without your fingers near the router bit. Also stops kickback. I love y'all and want you to keep your fingers attached.

    Having her rip a board off that huge slab was ambitious. She did great. Seems to be fairly competent to begin with.
    One hack my dad taught me to implement on my table saw is a hinged board hanging over the off switch, so you can turn off the saw with your knee while still holding the material and watching your hands. Especially for somebody new to the saw, seeing her duck below the workpiece while keeping her left hand up made me nervous.
