    I don't think you need a dedicated "10kHz" version. These analog tuned DSPs use rather wide AFC function which retunes the radio to the exact signal it sees. It first tunes to the exact frequency corresponding to the knob position and looks for carrier there. If not found, it gradually widens the frequency range till it finds one and then retunes properly on it (tunes the antenna). If this carrier is more than half of the tunning control step away (so there is other position of the dial), it artificially reduces the volume in order to get the "correct tuning" feeling, but that is 100% artificial behavior, the real reception is tuned exactly onto that carrier found. Usually the total search range for the given dial position is way wider than channel spacing, often 30..50kHz (so +/-3..5 channels). And the artificial "detune volume reduction" is often temporary - if there is really just that single carrier, after few seconds many chips just take that as "the desired station" and bring the volume back up.
    The only issue could be, if two stations are the same frequency difference from the dial position, then it becomes tricky to convince the radio to select the weaker one, there the correct tuning step does help.

      Interesante explicación, gracias. El Degen DE-322, que tiene un espaciado de 10kHz, parece que no tiene un rango de escsneo tan grande como el xhdata D-219, diferencia muy bien entre canales adyacentes

    I like the radio and the review. A very important point is a wire antenna for the shortwave bands. Please let me add on this point. I use 7m of bell wire in my home in a wooden building. Wind the blank wire a few times around the antenna. Outside you can hang it in a tree. I have cut a piece of cardboard and I wind the 7m wire around it to store my antenna.
    This is all you need as a SWL.

    I got one of these for less than 8 bucks. It's a whole lot of radio for that price. It's actually pretty well made and fairly sensitive. The speaker isn't half bad either. I've heard worse sounding speakers on much more expensive radios. Time will tell how long it lasts, but so far it was a no brainer to buy the D-219.

    Just received this via XHDATA (through their US shipping partner) .
    D219 model. Tuning is a little different because it is an analog style “dial pointer” powered by a DSP chip inside, which means you have tune more slowly that you would expect. The receipt says “XHDATA US” and this one does appear to have the 10kHz spacing for North America on AM/Medium Wave. The dial pointer is a little off on all bands but not much so if you are pretty familiar with station reception in your area or can compare it with another radio, then it should not be a problem.The sensitivity seems pretty good although not quite as good as the D109. It’s still better than what I expected.

    The problem with XH Data's new releases is they put a few 100 out there at a great price; then, by the time the positive reviews start being published, pointing out that it's a good radio (for the price) the sample quantity is gone. When it re-appears in the marketplace - voila! - the price has increased 30-40%. We'll see what price is attached to the next batch of this model.

NEW question... between the D-219, D-328 and D-368 which would be your "best value" pick for an inexpensive radio for my niece and nephew who don't understand why Uncle Brad wants them to have a backup battery powered news gathering device..? If I missed your favourite inexpensive best value pick in the three radios proposed above please let me know... FYI... I lived 7 years of my life just north of Chicago... now back in Australia. The D-219 would be my recommendation. The big deal is that it takes standard AA batteries, has a Quality Build, and is Dirt Cheap. No worries on recharging it, unless you use eneloops. The D-368 is a fun radio, but has a few quirks that need to be fixed to be perfect. Explain Shortwave to them, and maybe that will peak their interest. The radio that doesn't need to be activated, needs no payment plan, and will work when the power grid/cell towers go down. The ability to listen to radio stations behind the horizon, and not needing a satellite in space to do it is also amazing :)

    What should be ideal specifications of DC adaptor to run this radio. It is operated with 2 AA cells that is 3volts. But for adaptor it mentions 5volts. Any idea? Also what should be the mah of the adaptor?

    • @todderbert
      @todderbert  Рік тому +1

      Not sure why they went with 5V, probably thinking of access to USB power..which isn't ideal. It will ruin reception on MW with its RFI. Note Polarity of the jack is opposite of most DC Input Jacks. The sleeve is Positive while the Center post is Negative. It says in the Manual to provide 5V/.300mA , C.Crane makes a Linear USB power adapter with those specs, but would require removal, and rewiring of the end jack. A linear supply is ideal for radio use.

    Seems XHDATA is the new TECSUN? :) I wonder when they will release a survival radio. I really have a soft spot for these super inexpensive Worldreceivers that run on just 2 AA batteries. Yeah i expected this to be FM Mono only. But that's fine. How would you say does this radio compare to the Tecsun R-9012 or the DR-920C ?

    • @todderbert
      @todderbert  Рік тому +3

      I would say it is great on FM and SW. the Tecsuns are all analog and will handle the AM band much nicer. The D-219 currently has 9kHz stepping which does affect incoming signal quality while using it in the States.

    • @KRAFTWERK2K6

      @@todderbert heheh for me as a Euro listener it's perfect. I never understand why they never include a Khz step switch on these DSP based radios. Still not full coverage but wayyy better than most other cheap competitors in this price range.

    I have a question that I hope those more knowledgeable would be willing to answer.
    I understand the AM/MW radio bands here in the US are stepped (spaced) at 10kHz vs. 9kHz in Europe - and that much of the rest of the world is stepped at 9kHz as well.
    It's been stated that the XHDATA D-219 AM/MW band is stepped at 9kHz by design - but with a manual tuner does that matter?
    Let me expand on this question.
    I also own a TECSUN PL-330 radio with a digital tuner which can be set of 10kHz or 9kHz.
    When I set the PL-330 AM/MW to 9kHz, then do a scan, many AM stations that I normally listen to are not picked up by the scan. However if I manually enter a "missing" station frequency into the radio, I can receive that station just fine when the step is set at 9kHz.
    When I set the PL-330 back to step at 10kHz and do a scan, all the expected stations are captured.
    This test infers to me that a 10kHz vs a 9kHz step really only impacts a digital turner radio - which the D-219 is not.
    I have done a number of searches on this question finding no clear answer to it.
    I bought this radio and I am really impressed by it.
    The community's thoughts?

    • @todderbert
      @todderbert  Рік тому +4

      This radio uses a DSP chip to handle the tuning. It is a digital tuned radio with an analog dial. Just like the C.Crane EP-Pro, which has an analog dial, DSP, but also includes a switch on the back to change the spacing from 9kHz to 10kHz.

      I was curious about the same thing until I just recently watched a video by a channel called SWL that explained very well the difference between an "analog tuned" DSP radio and a "true analog" radio. In it, he compares the D-219 (DSP) and the TECSUN R-9012 (true analog). Both have their pros and cons, but for only a few bucks more than the HXDATA, might as well own both 😂. I know I'm late to the party, but I how you or anyone else finds this informative.

      For one, we don't get the full expanded band to 1710kHz. You will get a lot of your stations because it tunes close enough to pick up the side bands of the carrier, but it will not be in perfect tune, and audio quality is affected. I just compared this to a properly tuned radio, and the D-219, and found I could listen to the station but it did not sound as good as the one that was on the center position of the carrier.

      @@todderbertHi. Is it like the size of a modern smartphone? I am curious as I do radio DX with a 1970s Sony Worldzone CRF5090. This could be useful if I am going on holiday.

    The jack inserts at the top are poor design. They should always be on the right or left.

    If only this little radio had a BFO it would be useful to hams who want to hear CW and single sideband transmissions. The lack of single sideband Means all the ham bands would be useless with him.

      Would be nice, the lowest priced new SSB radios seem to be the Tecsun PL-330, and PL-368. Might find a Grundig, or Realistic brand radio with a BFO for less, used.
