It's not acting they are actually a couple. You can tell when Taylor enters the room, Ben's eyes just light up completely. So glad you reacted to this version. I've been looking all over to see someone react to them because I think it's so beautiful and sweet.

if anyone is seeing this lovely couple for the first time, it took me a while to get their names right, so:
Ben Levi Ross (they/he): the first singer in the glasses and blue sweater, played Evan on national tour.
Taylor Trensch (he/him): the second singer in the green and red, played Evan on broadway.
also Ben was an understudy on broadway for a bit!

In the second chorus, taylor is actually on the high harmony while ben is on the lower end and during the ending, ben is on the melody while taylor is doing a low harmony. This is one of my favorite versions that DEH has released yet!
There's just so many small cute gestures that they each do towards the other that if this was acting...it would be inhuman levels of acting cause it just looks so natural and effortless and meaningful. Like when Taylor kinda leans in and angles his head upwards toward Ben at 5:28 or when Taylor bites his lower lip at 7:16 and just how Ben's smile just reaches every part of his face when he smiles at Taylor. It's beyond adorable and I love this.

I am honored to tell you that I was involved in a production at my college of the Last 5 Years where we had 2 casts! 1 was a strait couple and the other was a gay couple with 2 women! We surveyed the audience after to see how the story translated differently for them depending on the cast they saw! It was amazing! I just thought you would have like to know that it does truly exist!😊 #GetHannahtoseethis!
Combining musical theater with a psychological study group is a new concept. I'd be curious to see what conclusions came out of it.

That sound so interesting. Did the audience know before hand or was it a surprise? How were the reactions of the audience?
@@NeedANewName The shows alternated every other day with the casts so most people knew the show was going to be different depending on the night they saw. We actually noticed that audience response was more emotional with the lesbian cast. Stereotypes within the show on gender and sexual orientation were observed more in the strait cast based on audience response. We also saw many shared responses, for instance audiences believed that both casts of characters were truly in love at a certain point. We also saw varying responses on who people believed was responsible for the end of the relationship. We see more people leaning on Cathy with the gay couple and more leaning on Jamie with the strait couple but those were very slight. Our goal was for the audience to not place blame on one character. They both contributed to the end of the relationship and sometimes that is overlooked because Jamie cheats. It appears that many people did see faults on both characters based on responses. I found this very interesting when looking over the responses!
That's so interesting. And I can totally see why that were the results that happened. It does put in perspective how your unconscious biases can have an effect how you few the story.
I definitely think you should react to Lin and Ben singing Found/Tonight. These men... these voices... the lyrics... I'd die for them in a heartbeat.

They both understudy Evan and one or both of them under understudy Connor, so when they go on together in those roles they have to sing "But not because we're gay" and I just thought I'd share that. Also this is quite possibly the cutest thing I've ever seen in my life!!! ah!!!!!!

I was able to see Ben as Evan on tour & he was spectacular. I cry every time I listen to this version of the song because it's just feels me with so much joy & hope. Not to mention Ben & Taylor are the cutest couple.
Don't get me wrong - I love Ben Platt. I do wish I had a cast recording of Ben Levi Ross though. He was Evan the first time I saw DEH and his voice is breathtakingly beautiful. I also would love one with Steven Christopher Anthony, who I saw my second time. I do love that Taylor is singing some songs on the DEH Deluxe version of the cast recording. I am anxiously waiting to see DEH again when it returns!!

Fun fact: this was during Valentines Day or at least released that day. They're together IRL (engaged?) and I believe this was also a surprise so it was a 3in1 romantic vid through and through. O and didn't the other Evan(Ben) understudy for the other Evan(Taylor) before he played the part himself? Yeah. 4in1 now.
I don't think they're engaged but they've been together for almost 3 years I think! And yeah Ben understudied Evan even before Taylor became part of the production and they understudied the roles of Evan, Connor and Jared during Taylor's run as Evan and after that Ben played Evan on the first national tour.

I just saw a virtual production of "The Last Five Years" at Millikin University's student theatre company with multiple casts - two women, two men, and the traditional one of each - and it was OUTSTANDING. I unfortunately missed the all-male cast because I was down for the count after my second dose of the vaccine, but the all-female version worked SO well - they didn't change any keys, so it was a mix of singing it as written and taking it up an octave for the lower stuff. In the wedding duet, the girl playing Cathy ended up singing the lower harmony because of the option up, and it genuinely brought tears to my eyes it was so good. So it can be done, and done extremely well!
