Bro.. that final quote from Winters? About “grandpa were you a hero in the war?” Fucks me up every time man without fail. Loved watching this with you guys and looking forward to the Pacific and other WWII stuff you guys check out!
Most of these men never talked about their experiences until Ambrose starting interviewing them for his book. Their families had no idea what they had done during the war. They never viewed themselves as Heros. Truly The Greatest Generation....
Major Winters wrote in his memoir that as a combat leader you have to know which of your men are the "natural killers". He said his natural killers were Speirs and Guarnere. Clear as day!
That book was great. i loved that he labeled his "killers". David Webster wrote Parachute Infantry. its another good book, that somewhat gives a different perspective on the war. i highly recommend it. Also, Malarkey, Compton, wrote books, and Babe Hefferon and Bill Guernere wrote a book together. ALL of them are worth reading.
ACTUALLY, the update is this: Last Man of Easy Company, Edward Shames NORFOLK, Va. - Edward Shames, a World War II veteran who was the last surviving officer of “Easy Company,” which inspired the HBO miniseries and book “Band of Brothers,” has died. He was 99. Dec 4, 2021
My Grandfather was in Bastogne and he was sent without a coat. He survived through almost half the battle, in freezing conditions, until his brother (my Uncle) showed up from another division with a coat for him casue he heard he didn't have one. My Grandfather hated the cold more than anyone I've ever known. It wasn't until his death we learned why. He would not speak about the war at all. If someone started to talk about it, he would leave. He had trouble sleeping for the rest of his life. He would walk the halls for hours in the middle of the night. In spite of all that, he raised 4 successful kids and was THE most responsible man I've ever known. The BEST man I've ever known. He died in 1990 when I was 13. I really wish I could have talked about this stuff with him. It's the ones who never talk about the war who are the most troubled.
I really appreciate what Alex said at the end about this giving him a greater appreciation for what he has in his life. Years ago in my days in the Rangers (now 30-40 years past) we'd go quite a few places, most of which were pretty ragged and poor - not the nice big cities. Places in Central and South America, Africa, even the squalid areas of the Middle East, etc. It was always a point of mine to the men about taking in what they saw, felt, even smelled. Sometimes I could send a few of them into some of the villages/towns just to see how other people have to live. When they got back home I wanted them to thank their parents for being born Americans, tell them what they saw, and remember how we got and have kept our country from those who would destroy it. From an old retired Sergeant Major, I say Good on You, Alex - You Get It.
I think Alex came a long way (all of them really) but I remember Alex's initial comments at the beginning of the series coming off to me as very juvenile. As the serious progressed and his education grew through watching, I noticed more thoughtfulness from him and i really give him a big hand for saying what he did after this documentary. Well done young man , well done all of you!
there was this video series i found a long time ago made by CPT Nixon's actor about the training for the show. the put them all through their own little boot camp. gotta be 15 years old now but its out there
Bradford C. Freeman, who was known to his friends as Mr. B, passed away on July 3, 2022, according to his obituary. He was 97 years old. He was the last of the 101st Airborne "Easy Company" To all the Men and Women past present and future who serve our nation I want to say thank you from the bottom of my heart you will never be forgotten.
After watching Shifty Powers in this documentary I went and bought his autobiographical book, Shifty's War. Really enjoyed it. He was an amazing man. There's a few more I'm in the process of reading and on my list of want to read.
Thank you all for doing the reactions to BAND OF BROTHERS and WE STAND ALONE 👏👏👏👏 great reactions, much respect...the men of easy company and their families had reunions each year
Funny how Major Dick Winters fought in Normandy, Battle of the Bulge, Market Garden, Bastogne, led the Brecourt Manor Assault, was in charge of the taking of Hitler’s Eagles Nest, fought all over Germany & Holland and came out of WWII with ONLY five medals. Whereas General Mark Miley (Joint Chiefs of Staff) a man who has NEVER seen combat, has a chest full of medals from his elbow, up to his shoulder blade. How is this fair? When I was in the Army, we called those types of medals that Miley has as “been there” medals. You didn’t have to do anything special to get them, you just had to show up & be there!
Just to let you know theres a Y T channel called The Operations room that has animated 3 of the actions featured in the series, dramatic licence used by the show writers may be revealed however.
Great reaction and commentary. Yup, this documentary does put the entire series together. Looking forward to your commentary on the series. Way to go, guys!
These elder gentlemen were once young, lethal badasses without trying to be. This type of MAN is rarely manufactured in the modern day. Nice tribute gents. Keep it up the good work. Watching from metro Atl GA
The History Underground channel has a great series of videos following in the footsteps of Easy Company from Currahee to Bastogne. They are definitely worth checking out if you want to learn more
sadly JD teamed up with Dorr who has stolen items from some E co vets esp Wild Bill and the Winters collection that was swindled from him by Jake Powers , Dorr paid in the 6 figures for it. he paid for Babe's items also.
Another comment told me that Spiers' family didn't like the stories that he killed a group of Germans during the invasion because of standing orders not to acquire POWs until areas are secured near Normandy. Winters wrote a book about experiences during WWII. He contacted Spiers about the incident to avoid being sued by Spiers. Spiers informed that it is true about the incident. (After Malarkey talking German soldier from Eugene, Oregon). Spiers' family tried discredit the story.
The saddest thing for me is realizing that for example they lost half of their men on day one. Just a single flip of a coin, bullets going just a couple inches to the left or right, and this story would have been told with different characters. With similar stories of heroism, brotherhood, overcoming or losing to fears and people rising through the ranks and getting some kind of peace and starting families afterwards etc etc etc, it being decided to be excluded from that for half of them, before most of them even reached the ground on the first day. None of us want war, and we all hope to come out as heroes if we were ever forced into it, but most of us will be footnotes and statistics in the stories of others.
There are many good movies based on true stories from WW2 and I'd love to see you guys reacting to all of them. One that not many people seem to have watched is 'The Railway Man' with Colin Firth and Nicole Kidman. I think you will find the story truly amazing as indeed so many from that war are.
5:00 mark part of his earning the nick name wild bill - i remeber sitting on my bunk talking with Wild Bill way back during the 50th ann. of the battle of the bugle and how between the 2nd and 3rd the ambush during normandy he used the 2 P38 pistols he got after the 1st ambush he shot 2 PW's they had taken during the 2nd ambush. this was never mentioned in the book or series or any interviews esp now a days as everyone is hot about Speirs shooting PW's god i miss hanging with Babe listening to him sing his songs while drinking his beer being heckeled by Bill with Jack agnew "filthy 13" making comments and so many of the guys in the barracks. 11:15 mark we gave those M42 jump jackets to Bill & Babe in 2000 when we gave Maj. Witners the guidon 14:21 mark that was a pic of Nixon with some of his booze. 17:58 dinking with them and listening to them talk was the best thing they would share so much esp with other grunts and vets we sat there in the barracks like kids listening to them.
Question: Do any of you guys play war games, or video war games...and if yes, did this journey with BoB affect that in any way? *great reactions...loved sharing it with you. I'd never seen the series before and was so emotional throughout....🇨🇦❤
Something I read recently is that it take a man after being in war 10 years to go back to “normal”. Then the article goes on to say a guy said to him “I turned 35 today realizing I was never 25 due to nam, so he became a 25 year old man and drank himself to death a few months after talking to me for the first time in 12 years after the war I miss him dearly” that’s the reality of war and we’re seeing it all over again In the lives of the veterans of the global war on terror and later on hopefully sooner than later , Europe will see it in the boys that live through Ukraine
Loving your guys world war 2 reactions..You should look into the battle of midway from the Japanese perspective video.…It’s in a few parts but it totally covers the battle of Midway, which was the turning part of the war in the Pacific against the Japanese. After Midway the Japanese were on the defensive for the rest of the war.
Bro.. that final quote from Winters? About “grandpa were you a hero in the war?” Fucks me up every time man without fail. Loved watching this with you guys and looking forward to the Pacific and other WWII stuff you guys check out!
We had to finish this series properly. The least we can do.
@@RKnights you guys did it right, good job
Man, for me it's Shifty saying the heroes are still over there.
The most powerful and beautiful words I ever heard.
Few things more moving than an aged veteran getting choked up while recounting his traumatic memories.
It choked me up.
Agree 100%
Most of these men never talked about their experiences until Ambrose starting interviewing them for his book. Their families had no idea what they had done during the war. They never viewed themselves as Heros. Truly The Greatest Generation....
Humble and true heroes. Even Winters.
Major Winters wrote in his memoir that as a combat leader you have to know which of your men are the "natural killers". He said his natural killers were Speirs and Guarnere. Clear as day!
Major Winters was the right man at the right time. He knew how to lead.
I can definitely see that
That book was great. i loved that he labeled his "killers". Thanks for watching that guys. You young people seem to have the proper respect for EZ and all WW2 content!!
The sacrifice needs to be appreciated and honored.

In the related Hurtgen Forest battle, locals still find remains of soldiers from both sides.

We had to. Out of respect
There are other interviews on UA-cam of these men, and some videos of their reunions. All worth a watch.
You guys should react to the Pacific. Another great war time mini series.
They started the Pacific. The first episode reaction is on their channel!
First episode is already out :)
Its gonna be a bit more spaced than our B.O.B series was, but we have enjoyed the first episode.
Nice job guys! I feel the respect you have for these men.
I appreciate that!
Hi, Rest in peace Easy Company. They all have been gone a few years now.

This documentary is great - I also recommend watching the making of video Ron Livingston filmed. It's 😆
If I may make a suggestion. You should check out The Pacific. I think you'll like it too.
