We know that CGI never fails to amaze us. Time and time again, Marvel exceeds our expectations but what is even more impressive is the magic they pull off WITHOUT using CGI. In this video we’re taking a look at how the makeup artists and prosthetics teams bring to life the out of this world and fantastical Marvel characters we all know and love. How was it for the actors who had to endure shooting in these restrictive and often hot costumes? How long did they have to sit in the makeup chair for?
The new Captain America is here and guess what? His costume isn’t any comfier than Chris Evans’ was! Which actors' makeup was so intense that it literally had to be melted off of them at the end of each day in a sauna to avoid damaging their skin too much?
What about how many people it took to get Brie Larson into her Captain Marvel costume? How about the amount of people it took to get her out of the costume enough just so she could go to the washroom? It is way more than you’d think. How about the fact that the beautiful gold dress that Ayesha wears is actually made almost ENTIRELY of metal?
For Karen Gillan, getting into character as Nebula wasn’t too hard to do since she had Nebula’s skin literally glued right onto her face! Yes, we said glued.

Never cared much about the difficulties in makeups and costumes but woah this new perspective will make watching more interesting.
I can't imagine sitting on a chair for hours, with people touching my face and body to apply makeup and prostetics. What a pain that must be.

for a wopping 5 to 10 million dollars to do it for up to 5 months, i would sit in that chair letting them do w,e they wanted to me for double that time. and i bet you would too haha.
I didn't even like sitting in a chair for 15 minutes while make up was applied to me when i worked at a haunted house. The entire feeling is just gross and uncomfortable. But afterwards you look at it and go wow! Then can't WAIT to wash it off. lol
I mean ok, but they sign a contract and get paid to do this. They don’t get “forced” to do it. If the actors didn’t want to wear the costumes or play the characters, then they would not have signed the contract. It’s not forcing someone if they get paid. There whole job is to wear costumes and act.

I didn't realize paying someone 10-20 million dollars was forcing them. If that's the case sign me up!
You become the directors property they can do what they want to you. After they finish doing that you have to be the character. Nope not for me at any price. It would chip away at your sanity every movie you did. And you have to imagine whats happening all the time in front of green screens. Start at 3am finish at 3am 24 hours later and so on. Ian mckellan broke down in tears in front of the green screen when he was playing Dumbledor in Harry Potter, because he was so lost. It has to be imagined and after a lifetime of acting normally where he could see everything going on around him in the studio he struggled to adapt. Hats off to the movie actors of today.

@@getsmarty7603 You are absolutely right, my brain switches things to keep me on my toes, or it hates me! It should have been that Ian McKellen played Gandalf in Lord of the Rings. Both wizards though, so I was close🙄😜
They should have cosplayers on their staff. They’re the ones that know what materials are better at being lightweight and breathable since they recreate their favorite characters all the time. Have you’ve been to a Comic-Con? They’re awesome!

See this is why I love marvel. It’s really uncomfortable in tyre costumes but all of them manage to get through a 2 hour movie. Like if you agree.
Except filming a 2hr movie take more than a couple of hours... More like 2 hours filming (goofs, re-shoots, edit, change lighting, touch make up,adjust to match look of previous shoot taken different day, etc) for like 10 minutes complete

"Forced" seems like a hard word to use. They signed a contract and like all hollywood actors they do this all the time not just Marvel Actors.

I LOVE TOM HIDDLESTON SO MUCH! i wish his outfit and helmet weren’t so heavy because i can’t imagine how sweaty he was. i love all of loki’s outfits!
I actually read that while CGI was offered for Michael Chiklis when playing the Thing, he insisted on wearing a suit to make it more realistic since he’s such a big fan of the Fantastic 4
Christian Bale told Ben Affleck to put it in his contract to require that his Batman suit has to let him go to the bathroom without anybody's help, because you don't feel like Batman when you need 4 people to help you go to the bathroom

I always figured it takes a long time to put on and take off everything, especially going in the sauna to melt off the body makeup

imagine putting 3hours worth of makeup in their body only to be covered by their costume..
Imagine filming Guardians of the Galaxy 2 and walking onto set at like 5am and seeing Bautista, Zoe, Elizabeth, Karen, Pom, and Lee Pace all there while Chris arrives at like 8am

I stood up for two hours for a friends sfx demo and I almost fainted the last hour locking your legs for so long makes you wanna faint so it’s wild that he lasted that long and still was able to work

They aren't forced to do that stuff. They get paid, quite well, to become those characters.

Having been injured in a gas explosion I lost the majority of my sweat glands in my arms, so, my face ans body take up the slack and sweat more to reduce excess body heat, I know first hand what it is like, as, when I wear a costume it is profoundly uncomfortable especially as sweat continually runs into my eyes. I can use vaseline to stop that happening but then I have even less places to sweat from then my body has to find some other uncomfortable places to sweat from.
What do they get in return? Tons of fans and money

As someone who wants to be an actor, my biggest fear isn't a long makeup process, it's needing to wear contacts. I have a huge fear of things being in my eye and just the idea of contact lenses makes me want to throw up

Me too, there were no seams or changes between his skin and the prosthetic skin. I was positive he had to put the weight on.....till i googled it. He has that wheeze to his voice like he is out of shape and on a diet of whisky 🥃, vodka and gin 😂 i bought that completely. I was really sad that he lost all those lovely abs. 😭

Imagine getting paid all that money and having to endure such pain. Id quit and get a job that requires only 8-12 hours of physical labor 5-6 days a week and pays alot less. Wait thats what I do now.

I'm amazed it only took 5 hours for Dave Batista's makeup. As an amature SFX artist, I can't imagine getting all that done....though I guess he had a whole team and premade prosthetics instead of out of kit shit so. Yeah I guess that makes sense

I really look up to them so much more now! I felt claustraphobic when i was watching them get their costumes and makeup on!! I cannot believe they can do all the movements they do, knowing how much pain they will be in. Those awful tight helmets must be so terrible, cant hear, can barely see in some of them, or huge black contact lenses. Those would be excruciating to wear for hours on end. Then getting hung up in the air in heavy plastic suits... It wod be so much more sustainable in brown paper bags...... 😂 Can you imagine?? .
