I've recently brought a 9in Oscar and he's in with 2 other smaller Oscars how ever I simply just can't get him to eat as he seems more interested in trying eat the other 2 I've spoken to the person I had the fish off and he said he's never fed him feeder fish how ever he simply won't accept any pallets or fresh foods have you got any ideas how to possible get him to feed? Thanks
Tazawa Tanks hey man I have some pond sticks! Are those good for my oscars until I get around to getting the pellet food??
Probably ok if they aren’t too old or expired.
Finally a GOOD oscar video
Thanks! Have you seen my other videos on Oscars? I have a playlist.
Yea
I have a small (3”) Oscar. My wife and daughter were not fans of fish at all, but they have been converted by my tiger Oscar and is their favorite in my aquarium. I feed him fluval bug bites, hikari gold pellets, and omega one frozen chiclid formula(his favorite). He lives well with my Dempsey and Texas.
Zenzo thanks for the education I’ve been considering an Oscar a lot lately.
Very useful information! Keep up the great work!
i just love these fish, crazy love for this fish ... thanks for sharing
They are my favorite. I have 4 lol
My Oscar loves snails. Aswell as the Hikari pellets. I switch from the high protein to the spirulina pellet once in a while so he gets some greens as well
Beautiful Oscar man! i can see you put a lot of time into fish.
Nice video! I bought a juvenile Oscar two days ago (my first) and for now I'm feeding him tropical supervit granulat. In a few days I will probably buy also some cichlids specific pellet.
Great video Zenzo
really helpful!!
Hi love the video big fan from the uk keep up the good work
Thanks Andy!
Thanks for that good to know what other keepers feed as well, I'm based in South Africa and have 2 Big Oscar's, I feed them mainly Chichlid gold pellets and blood worms they love it..
If I also may add... feeding your Oscar live fish will also cause him to hate other fish you may have in with him/her. Hence it will make your Oscar chase (even though the fish may - be too big for him to eat - other fish and creating an unnecessary Stress level in your aquarium. Glad you pointed that issue out about the other aspects of live fish. Two thumbs up!!
Not necessarily... I've had many tanks that were pretty much 100% live fed predator tanks & had 0 issues with aggression at all.. as long as they have the proper space and there's enough food for everyone, there's really no reason for them to fight.. I never did store bought feeders though, always raised my own and had convict's in the tanks/ponds with the other fish because they breed non-stop. So there's ALWAYS something to eat.... That's just like people assuming a dog will become aggressive if you feed it meat🤦 lol
Good info.
Great info
Thanks for the videos about oscars! I've been searching guides about how to take care of them and i learned a lot from your videos! I feed them Hikari Cichlid Staple because they are about 3 inches since i got them in a pet store
I have a relatively small oscar (about 3 inches long) and i have no idea how many medim hikari pellets to feed him. Have any suggestions?
Awesome video, recently my Oscar started getting bored with the same staple diet. I started trying some different foods, and ended up ordering a mealworm kit, to grow them at home. The Oscar loves them and they don’t make a mess either at feeding time. It’s good to see you have success with mealworms too. Thanks again from NH.

Haven't kept Oscars in the past 25 years. Had a pair FL that loved eating burgers, whatever anyone brought into the enclosed porch. They grew fast and large, on all that unhealthy junky food. Now, I'm so picky about food and the contents. Good information and footage. Thanks!
Very good video, thank you.
Glad you liked it!
I have used Frozen Bloodworms to my two Red Oscars - they love it. I also have used two different floating pellets: Hikari Gold Cichlid Staple (Green) and Cichlid Gold (Red) - both are not very exciting to them. Dried bloodworms they like as well. Dried Bay Shrimp and Frozen Brine Shrimp also a yes, but very messy. Dried Meal Worms are so-so. I need to find something dry for us in my auto feeder. Thoughts?
Thanks for info
My Oscar grew up on fluval bug bites too and I vary it with northfin cichlids tropical sticks. Occasional treats are raw shrimp with green peas. And weekly I’ll liquid drop of sera fishtamin
Great video..very useful information..
Right now Ozzy is very small and I just got him...he only eats the floating cichlid pellets..maybe when he gets bigger he will eat other things
Hey I feed mine on hikari floating pellet and he gets treats of earth work, crickets and prawns. His favourite is earthworm.
Thanks...really well advice to Oscar lovers.
Awesome video. I have 4 Oscars, they love the Hikaru pellets, Topfin pellets frieze dried crickets, frieze dried, grasshoppers, meal worms, they go insane for the frozen blood worms, my oldest one that’s about 12 inches, know how to jump up out the water so I can drop the cube directly in his mouth and he only eats at one end of the aquarium, His name is Big O, a Tiger Oscar the others are, Oscar, a Tiger Oscar who’s about 10 inches, Al, an Albino Oscar who is a juvenile and Vail (Vail tail Oscar) who is also a juvenile. Sorry I had to introduce them they are my heart. They also go crazy for the freeze dried JumboKrill shrimp and lastly the Frozen Silverfish, I they are kinda burned out on them. This video was right on time. Gonna try them on shrimp fresh and frozen from the market as well as other fish, Bug Bites, the jury is still out on the snails Lol. Afraid of another snail population explosion. Keep the great video, very educational...
I got my little Oscar (3 inches or so) and he seems to LOVE this pea, shrimp, and black solider fly larva puree, but he also likes the herbivore flakes I give to the silver dollars that are with him, I do a lot of cichlid gold, mostly just because its some sold stuff I have laying around, getting some bug bites soon too.
Had an Oscar when I was 15, really tempted to get another especially with all the hype they are getting lately.
My self I have a few videos of mine on UA-cam on my channel but I feed them some northfin jumbo fish pellets with some nutrafin big bits and some freeze dryed shrimp and also some fresh haddock every so offten
Glad I found this video just picked up my first Oscar today. How many times of day do you feed them?
2
I’m planning on setting up my 75 gallon tank I’ve seen in other videos is it possible to keep 2 Oscar’s in a 75 gallon with a fluval 407 canister filter and a big emperor filter and my other question is is it better to do a bare bottom or with substrate for those guys ?
Thank you
I have an 8 inch tiger, had him for almost 2 years nowand he absolutely loves his pellets and bloodworms
I don't have an oscar but in general my fish seem to prefer solider fly larva over meal worms. Interestingly I originally bought them for my chickens but my fish like them too. I have small fish and just save the crushed up parts from the bottom of the bag (recycling--lol). The good thing is that you can easily get them at places like walmart, tractor supply etc or order them from Amazon.
Thank you for the tips and info. I just bought my first Oscar and I'm not used to taking care of anything cichlid. I appreciate your informative video. 💚🐡💚
Thanks for the great info! Oscars are on my wish list and I hope to someday keep them. How are feeder shrimps as an occasional treat for Oscars/fish? Do they pose a significant threat for fish diseases/parasites?
From what I’ve read, feeder shrimp are generally okay to feed, as most diseases that they may have don’t transfer to fish.
I have 2 Oscar’s in a 75 gal with a pleco and 1 African cichlid. They all seem to love Canadian night crawls with cichlid med. pellets! The pleco loves to clean up any scraps that the Oscar’s drop while playing fetch with the worm. Looking into finding something that simulates the top water action!
Hi,which is the good food for Oscars.i am giving freeze dried shrimp-E and they love it.now I am trying for this hikari cichlid staple but my fish not taking that . which is the best for growth and good colour please reply me.
Aquarium people said shrimp only for growth , pellets is good food growth and development colour.
I just rescued 2 large Oscars. I’ve been feeding pellets and freeze dried shrimp. I’ll be getting some meal worms for treats. I watched your video to make sure I’m feeding correctly. 👍🏼
Great Information! Question? I made a mistake and let 3 small cory catfish loose in my Oscar's tank and he ate them. He has not eaten anything else in over 5 months! What can I do to get him to eat again? Note: He is about 10 inches long and husky and is the only fish in a 55 gallon tank, and He had been eating Hicari gold pellets for 3 years prior! Please help me!
Hey Zenzo, my Tiger Oscars, Gumby and Pokey, are about 10 months old and about 10 inches long now. I have mainly raised them on Hakari Gold Pellets and Cichlid Sticks as their staple food. They also really seem to enjoy nightcrawlers, bloodworms, and raw shrimp. I, like you, would never feed them live fish, too risky. What other fish do you feel would be most likely compatable with my Oscars in my 125 gal....I would like to add a couple blood parrots, firemouths, a Jack Dempsy, Severum, and a Green Terror to my "SouthCentral American Ciclhid tank. How many in total do you recommend?
My 60 gal. African Cichlid tank currently has a mix of 20 different Mbuna and Peacock Cichlids...it seems like, the more the merrier with them lol.
I love Oscar!! He's adorable and just as camera shy as mine and God forbid I do their water changes....they play dead on the tank floor lol
I feed my 3 oscars feeders once in a while as a treat. They love it. When the feeders hide they swim threw the pcv pipes to hunt them down. But thier daily diet its good fish pellets, bug bites and to large blocks of bloodworms. I tried shrimp brime but they prefer bloodworms
I feed my Oscar's freeze dried tubifex worms is it good for them?
i usually give them shrimps, snails and crickets but is it ok if i give them sole lisards? cus ive seen my friends oscar loves them. should i do it too?
I think it's important to try to include vegetable matter in their diet (I recently lost an oscar due to an intestinal blockage and I´ve read that it might have been due to not including enough veg. matter - I was giving them a lot of mussels and prawns at the time). So with my remaining oscar, I started giving him peas and he also loves Tetra Cichlid Algae pellets, which float on the surface and she loves. She also likes Sera Discus Granulat (very small pellets for an oscar, but she loves them) and also larger pellets, plus frozen foods of various types.
That's a great take, I would've never guessed they needed veggies in their diet 😮
My Oscars loooooove blanched de-shelled peas! 😋 Along with Hikari Gold and the odd treat of thawed shrimp and bloodworms! Gonna definitely try the mealworms 🐛 Do you feed them live??
Live and freeze-dried.
I'm feeding them Hikari Bio Gold+ pellets... They seem to like it and grow very fast!
I have just buy a pair of tiger Oscar about 4-5cm long . I kept it with a shebram almost same size and with 2 silver dollar in a 100 gallon tank .. upto what size of Oscar growth i should put them together.
Love it
I've read some people feed their Oscars hot dogs! I don't think I'll ever try that. I also feed my Oscars snails from my planted tanks. Aside from that I feed a few different cichlid pellets, freeze dried shrimp, sun-dried anchovies, dried black soldier fly larvae, and a couple types of Repashy.
Sounds like a great diet...minus the hot dogs!!!
i bought a 6inch albino oscar is it okay if i put it on my tank with 3 breeder size angelfish and a 4inch oranda goldfish?
I fed mine earthworms and they began to grow much, much faster. The only problem was I enjoyed feeding them so much that the waste from digesting the worms turned the water green. UV clarifier solved the problem and I had adequate biological filtration to handle the nitrogen cycle. Of course I had to do more water changes. Although earthworms are land based, all fisherman know that they get washed into fish habitats and the fish love them.
HalfMan HalfCichlid I agree, worms are great!
My Oscars LOVE Nightcrawlers, and it is FREE FOOD...we collect them out in the yard at night every time it rains.
Having a 125 tank for an Oscar is my fantasy. I have two other tanks and do not have MTS. Oscars are the only fish I would ever break my tank code for! They are delightful!
My Albino Tiger Oscar absolutely slams mealworms and crickets. Seeing her strike things on the surface is insane
Bro i had no idea you had your own thing on here. Thought you just rocked with the co-op
Hey I got to ask her what about 12 1/2 inches long I’ve had them for three years now and I feed them pellets and dehydrated shrimp and in the video your Oscar was hiding from the camera inside of my two Oscars love when people come to the tank there like two little puppy dogs
I feed my oscar a wide variety of foods, pellets, flakes, snails, peas, cucumbers, frozen shrimp, and this meal worm with cricket and grasshopper trail mix stuff
Finally a good Oscar video but if you are keeping a pet Oscar by itself, you can give it guppies, platys and mollies to eat. It does add enrichment to its life because they do enjoy the hunt while not being piscavores . Also crickets are a good option but definitely a much better idea to feed them dead crickets than live. Very good diet along with its pellet staple although I wouldn’t just buy these fish at a pet store and feed it to the Oscar right away. Don’t give it bugs and live fish every day. Do it once every week or two. Breed your guppies, mollies, and platys. Even baby convicts make a good snack for it.
If you are doing a cichlid tank with an Oscar I highly recommend not doing live unless there’s enough food to go around
I use the very small grey guppies in my tank. The Oscars like chasing them around. I really use the fish for play things , eventually they get eaten but it’s not my Oscars main diet .. i feed them Hirichi food sticks, and bugs , worms
Only the ones that feed them feeders is just cause they think it’s very cool to see the chase. It’s not really worth it like you said. I fed mine beef heart and actual beef heart. Chopped it up and mixed with other pelleted and flakes foods all together. It’s a good source of vitamins and their body chemistry takes it in more and soaks it in that most pelleted and frozen food doesn’t give out. Nice vid, Zenso 👍🏼
my Oscar is only 5 months old but i feed him lots of things already of course a good pellet. Hakari Cichlid Gold twice a day. Freeze dried shrimp the the morning, then worms, crickets, frozen shrimp or tilapia at night. its a mix up everyday.
Xtreme fish food!!👍👍
im gona try out fluval bug bites for cichlids for my oscar. i want him to have the best
My 2 Oscar (3 .5 - 4.0 inch ) is in 60 galloon . Amonia level is stable aswell as ph. One Oscar eats all the pellets. While the other one gobles and throwsit out. I cant think to know y .
I feed my oscar tetra colour crisp , he absolutely loves it as it's flat but quite large in circumference!! ,,
Is it good for giving oscars only mealworms daily? I used to feed em hikari gold, but yesterday I tried to buy some mealworms and they went crazy for the goddamn mealworms. They are really cheap and not messy, I'm thinking to just give them only mealworms. Is it okay? I just want to my guys enjoy their food.
In your opinion how often would you feed an adult Oscar in a 75? I’m thinking about getting one
I have two oscars i mainly feed them live insects they love them so they wont eat pellets unless there super hungry
10/10 content
Can i feed snails to my oscars by removing their shell and it snails healthy for oscar fish
Which pallet food best for oscar
My Oscar fish is spoiled and will spit out the thawed frozen shrimp or scallops I give him. He will eat Hikari pellets, but at times he will ignore them. He loves live superworms though. But I don’t want him to get addicted to superworms. Any tips on how to feed a picky Oscar? Maybe don’t feed him superworms for awhile then try the thawed shrimp?
Mealworms indeed their favorite !!! My oscar was being picky and had to cut of the mealworms for a long time 🤣🤣
How big do they have to be to eat mealworms Or snails my Oscars eat frozen bloodworms and brine and hikari gold pellets they are 2 to 3 in
I feed mine Northfin, freeze dried brine shrimp or kill and cucumbers
i was about to buy dried mealworms and then i wanted to be sure can i feed him dried mealworms, the ones that you would feed birds with. By the way i feed him prawns
How about wild guppies there are a lot in our local lake/river
How often should I feed juvenile Oscars? Their about 2" long.
I adopted my large oscar and he is so picky. He doesn't like any pellets it seems, and all he wants to eat is frozen bloodworm. I think that's mainly what the old owner fed him. But the sand substrate and water quality seems to be very effected by the bloodworms. I feel like they're quite "dirty"?
Is beefheart bad for the fish, or do you say don't feed it because it's not natural diet for them?
Dan Schafer Some fish keepers swear by beefheart. If they are having success, that’s great. However, I choose not to, as it is not an ingredient that they would naturally eat.
Hello
I am from india and i have a juvinile oscar he has been with me for about 4 months and growing really slow. But he is quite active and healthy. After watching your video i have gained knowledge of what to feed him and how. But i have few questions in mind but i would first tell you my feeding schedule . Monday i feed him with pellets in the evening .Tuesday i dont feed him . Wednesday i feed him with sun dried shrimp in the evening. Thursday i feed him with pellets in the evening ,Friday i feed him with pellets in the evening , Saturday i feed him with sun dried shrimps in the evening an sunday again with pellets.
My questions are as follows:-
1) shall i feed him twice a day or once as i am doing it?
2) can any changes be done in the schedule as per your experience please suggest me?
3) which chiclid hikari food do you suggest? As in india only hikari food is available?
4) i have two baby snegal bichir about 3 inches long in a growout tank. So if any hikari sinking pellet can be given to my oscar and snegal bichir simultaneously if possible?
5) i am following the same schedule with my baby senegal bichir but feeding them twice because i want to grow them fast and healthy and they are housed with two upside down catfish which are about 4 inches .I would love to have suggestions on them as well about what additional food supplement i need to feed them?
Thank you
Will be eagerly waiting for your advice
Really loved the video about oscar fish diet .
Regards
Anindo sen
Thanks so much for this video. Could you also talk about Oscar filtration? I feel like it isn't talked about enough. Everyone just says "they're so messy"
Sure. I don’t think they are that messy though.
I currently have 2 gentle giant Tigers Oscars, and I think they're messy IMO, but if you have some bottom feeders to clean up their regurgitation it isn't too bad...I believe in overfiltration too...if there is "such a thing" lol
In your opinion what is the minimum tank size for 1 adult Oscar?
Can I feed my oscars small shrimp.
Thanks
Oscar love
Im new to having g Oscars how often should I feed him pellets is it like 1 time a day 2 or once every couple days
Once per day is fine for an adult. A couple of times a day if it is a juvenile.
@@TazawaTanks thank you so much this video helped a lot
My Oscar doesn’t like pellets what do I feed it?
Can we feed them Tubifex worm?
What are the fishes in the tank on your left ?
Thank you
Female aulonocara
can i dry shrimps under the sun..and feed them to my oscars?..and keep them as well on a jar?
Yes
How do you feel about producing your own feeders
I think if it is done responsibly, it's fine.
This was the best advice for Oscar diets. My jewel cichlids obliterate snails all the time 🤗. Do you recommend some types of fruits and veggies? I've heard Oscars eat fallen fruit in the wild.
wyzemann They do, but I’ve never tried.
Mine won’t eat veggies. I have a Pleco in this tank, and he won’t touch the veggies for the Pleco.
My oscar is not eating pelkets. How can i train them to eat pellets? They only likes live food😢
Also with live food, I had an oscar dislocate jaw and eventually died from fish stuck in mouth and tear in muscle under jaw. They love the floating pellets anyway.
I feed my Oscars shrimps dry fly larvae and platinum palettes
Live worms work well? Maybe just as a supplement from the pellets
Yep.
Mine is only like 1 n a half inches. I gave him half of a freeze dried shrimp, he almost lost his mind lol i thought something was wrong with him for the longest time, cuz he be swimming at an angle lol almost vertically when swimming stright.
Can I feed my Oscar flowerhorn food? I have Chingmix and Grand Sumo.
Yes.
