Well if you are in plain yes, but if you are on a steep you get slowed down but you still "ski", exept this i think they used a thing like "sciolina" (don't know english word) but its a thing you spread under your skis to have less friction, and maybe they built skis made for that (like grass skis that already exists) but those are my ideas not a fact
