Indexing is a part of the Latter Day Saints religious journey. The last time my auntie volunteered for a mission she worked one year helping to index WWII military records. She had done several other missions; one really big one was the Ellis Island project she worked over one year. She was a devote member of the faith. She was also a WWII Army Nurse RIP 💖

I started indexing after finding my first family record on Family Search. It is great practice but it's also very rewarding. It's a fantastic feeling when you read thank you messages from people who have found a family member from one of your projects. I would highly recommend it. All of these records are provided to us for free, giving back a little is the least we can do. You can pick and choose projects according to language, location and your confidence level. If you open a project that you can't manage to index you can simply put it back and choose another. Much love from Scotland. x 😊

Wow! Between the two of you ladies, my head is spinning! I never realized just how much I didn't know and why I keep getting stuck. I don't know if I will live long enough to put into practice these things that I have yet to learn! I do my Ancestry paid subscription once a year for 6 months and the other 6 months I suffer through the Ancestry being put on hold and try to be happy with Family Search. I'd rather use both simultaneously, but scheduling does not allow this to happen. I am thankful for your videos, Connie... they really help me to see that I need to be patient and find alternate ways of searching.
I recommend using one as you primary place for your tree. For me that's on Ancestry. Then use the other sites like FamilySearch for additional research of records and others trees. I only update FS for the lines I'm actively researching. It's too much to keep up with otherwise.
It might help you to go to a local Family History Center that you can find on the help section of Family Search. Many of these locations have research sources available to utilize as you are in person at the Family History Center.
I found the video to be most enlightening. I find Connie to be the easiest to understand of all UA-cam Genealogy sights. I have used FamilySearch many times and did not know the wealth of information. I also belong to the other sights and I utilize them all.
No matter how long you have been searching, there is always something new to learn.
Courtney was very helpful. How I would all love to have a job like hers where I got to search and play in records all day.

This site was great for my research. My family is from Costa Rica and it is harder to find information. My 84 year old aunt was delighted to see the family tree so complete. We followed about 11 generations

I always thought it would be better for "timelines" to import LOCAL events, instead of international events. It would be much more interesting for me to read that there was a flood or disease, or mine accident the same day that my ancestor died, than to know that ameila earhart flew someplace the day my ancestor died.

I learned a lot from this. I did find that the guest's replies were not always clear enough, or too fast, (including pointer etc speed) to make out, even with doubling back and repeating

Familysearch is one of my favorite sources, but I think it's wrong to allow one person to alter or delete someone else's research. Ownership aside, research results and research notes are used for future investigations. It provides a means to avoid duplicating arduous research. If I need to keep duplicate records and notes to keep them in tact - well, it defeats the purpose of keeping them on familysearch.
The only way to avoid those problems is to not put a death date. Since no one can access live people no on can do the things you mentioned.
exactly. I have had people add people to my tree and even change names dates whole nine yards. there was someone in the family that kept good records, data, she had written a bunch of books. she did a bunch of lines. she personally did interviews. I just wanted a place to move or less store my stuff in case my program goes bad on me. all kinds of things been added on. I don't want docs added on, I have those already in notebooks. I don't want people changing things. they have my free sooo messed up, they even decided my mom is dead. which is funny, I talk to her every day, she isn't dead!!!!!
I don’t like that aspect of Family Search either. It doesn’t happen to me that often because for whatever reason, my family seems to fly under the radar and I seldom find anyone who’s related to them. I was in WikiTree for a while and I never once got a hint on my family from anyone so I closed my account there. A few people have connected to my tree in Family Search. If they’ve made “corrections”, I usually don’t bother contesting them unless the corrections are egregiously wrong.
The same things happen on Find A Grave…
Indexing is much easier than when I first started doing it.
I also have been doing genealogy for over 30 decades. I stopped doing it 16 hours a day then stopped. What is online now the genealogy websites/programs are way more advanced now with many millions of more records. This video is great! Thank you Constance. I hope to never stop learning. I am going to have to get the happy dance t-shirt one of these days, soon though.
Favorite FS feature - the timelines. I found info on there that lead me to more genealogy treasure.

Appreciate this video on Family Search. I hate to admit I have the most difficult time trying to figure out HOW to navigate thru FS. I have no clue how to find records about a specific ancestor, how to attract them, how to change information, really the very most basic functions of the Tree. I cant even figure out how to find the information to figure it out. Lol.
And I'm not a beginner in genealogy or computers. I need a FT 101 basics class. Lol.

Family Search has seemed very accurate to me, but I've been cautious when going older than 1700.
Most people should be extremely cautious going back that far and many aren't.

You can shift the chart so that that seventh generation person becomes the center of the chart and then you can keep going.
Family Search has been very helpful to me. I have found a lot of death information there that I have not found on other sites like Ancestry and Find My Past. I like, too, that they include the certificate numbers in case I want to purchase the certificates at a later date.

@@GenealogyTV I spent a few hours this morning searching for records and finally found one that could not be located on Ancestry. My Great Grandmother's marriage certificate was unearthed because I was able to access courthouse records from the county where she wed. Very excited for this. Also, came across someone who changed her maiden name and birth year. I sent a message inquiring about who she was and what were her sources. Hopefully she will respond and perhaps new discoveries will be made.

Hi Connie - I really thoroughly enjoyed this. I am pretty intimidated by the idea of someone changing something I have worked so hard on, but that fan chart looks INCREDIBLE. I’ve always wondered where/how to do one of those. The tools they have with it look fascinating. So, I guess I’m going to have to give it a try.

Don't be intimidated by someone changing it, be bloody annoyed. I've ended up in email battles with assholes who insist on repeatedly deleting entire lines in favour of a random person with no records or sources other than... But he said he came from that village 200 years ago.
The problem I've run into with combining trees is that there is quite alot of wrong information.
Yes... This is why I'm trying to help educate the public to be as accurate as possible.

Hi I am interested in Chinese in America, not my family but Chinese in historical sense--famous Chinese persons--their entry records etc. I first started with National Archives and Records Administration(NARA)'s website, now moving on to Familysearch.org, would go to Ancestry should it be free to use. Anyway, I've been having this question ever since I searched on NARA and Familysearch: what's the relationship among NARA, Ancestry and Familysearch? A lot of images on NARA's webpages have a subtitle line--Image provided by Ancestry/Familysearch. When you go to say, Familysearch.org and look at their Passenger list series, almost all are made by NARA. I am confused. First of all, where are these records physically stored? I mean the original records on paper? Are they at NARA or are they with Ancestry/Familysearch? Why NARA had to claim Ancestry/Familysearch as image provider? Thank you！

Good morning. I was wondering how to correct mistakes on my Family Tree in Family Search? Thank you so much for all your help.
You know, I should do a video on this one. Next to any fact, you can click the Edit button and change it. You will need to put the reason for the change in the box. It will keep a list of sources in the right side and a list of everyone who has changed it below. Because it is a collaborative tree, others can change information too. Just make sure you can show documentation or state that it is personal knowledge because you knew the person, when making changes.

I STARTED MINE IN FAMILY SEARCH AND RECENTLY I FOUND WHERE THEY ARE ADDING MORE. BUT, IF ONE PERSON MAKES A MISTAKE, IT CHANGES ON ALL TREES ONLINE.
I'd like to purchase a new genealogy softwear, but don't know which one. I have 3 of them now 2 Family Tree Maker both obviously old, but I have so much data entered on the one so I purchased the 2nd years later thinking it would give some much needed improvement but no. The 3rd I don't even remember the name nor do I remember where I tossed it. Thing is the Font Size, and being visually impaired. Is there a softwear that one is able to change the font size so data entry isn't a horrific job. Thank you.

How do you upload your information from My Heritage and Ancestry because I have made a lot of my family tree on Ancestry, but am not wanting to have to input my My Heritage and Ancestry Trees to Family Search because I did not want to pay more for My Heritage and Ancestry, but do not want to lose the information. I do not know as far back on my Czechoslovakian and Polish and German and Austrian family.
Two things. One is, don't delete your trees on Ancestry or MyHeritage if you choose to stop paying for your subscription. @@GenealogyTV Thanks. I uploaded my trees from My Heritage with over 1200 people in it going back to the early 1500s with the Petris in Germany, so maybe that is why I majored in Microbiology. I also uploaded my Ancestry family tree to Family Search with 420 people in it going back to Kalmar Sweden and Czechoslovakia. I uploaded my My Heritage autosomal DNA to Family Tree DNA and have taken Ancestry DNA and 23 and Me and Family Tree DNA and CriGenetics DNA tests., all with slightly different ethnicities results and uploaded my My Heritage autosomal DNA to Genome Link and it shows 90% European with traces from all over the world, since I am mostly Northern European and the Vikings settled worldwide and mixed a lot and my dad's family settled and founded the USA and a lot of the family history was kept hidden because of family feuds in Europe and the Americas. The Native American is so far back that it is in the 1700s and does not show up in DNA tests.
Watched the video. I still do not know how to attach records from family search to my ancestry tree. Any suggestions.
When your on a person's profile page in Ancestry, in the top right of the page is a wrench, pencil, and magnifying glass. In a circle to the left of these is a Family Search icon. When you click this you can link it to the person in Family Search, and by clicking again once linked, other options appear like add Family members from Family Search etc. Hopefully this helps

By watching you use familysearch.org and showing how to use it. I started use it and putting my family information. But I have a question under the name of each family member there is a code _ _ _ _ - _ _ _ I want to know if it means something or can it help me get information of one family member
Everytime a new person is added to the tree they are assigned a "code" number. Since it is a shared tree the hope is that the numbers/person/name stay the same in the various trees, so duplications are not done. If a duplicate person is found fsmily sesrch hopes the duplicates can be merged into only one person.

Here's a way of using that code in a way a lot may not be aware of.... Let's say u have a relative and u know the father and mother of say 6 children and all are on the tree and each has that unique code id number.... later on u find out your relative's spouse has died and there are actually 2 spouses because he has remarried... and what u thought were one family with 6 children, now u realize that it is one father but he has been married twice and 3 of the children are from the first wife and the last 3 are from the second wife.... what u can do is add the new spouse. .... now record the id numbers of each of the 3 children that are from the second wife.... now go and sever the relationship...it will ask for a reason... just say "wrong mother" ....now go to the second marriage with the second wife, a select "add a child" but instead of just typing the info in, u can select to add by the "id number" and now u have the child with the right mother
EXACTLY, BUT IN FAMILY SEARCH YOU CAN MAKE A ALBUM FOR EACH OF THE 4 DIFFERENT NAMES
The screen inside the help center has been completely remodeled and no longer has the "Blog" link. I think it has been replaced with "Community"??

@Daniel While FamilySearch doesn’t offer translation services, they do have a page in their wiki that links to languages and how to read common words found in foreign records. The wiki page also has links to some foreign language translation services.

As far as the library in SLC goes, one of the main reaon to go there isnt for the physical films and books but for specific foreign research. My son in law's father is part Portuguese, Hawaiian, Japanese and Chinese. Even if he had the records, he couldnt read them. The library has people that can!

If she knows her biological parents she can look them up on family search, ancestry, my heritage, find my past, wikitree, etc. There are several places she can look and all of them will have various depth to their trees.

You can simply use the edit button and then save your updates. Go to the Person view, there should be a little edit in blue, next to each field.

I have added sources and they get removed. Why does source information disappear?
Try looking at the history of who is changing it.

Stick with what you know to be correct. FamilySearch is a great place to look for clues or work collaboratively.
The time line can be copied by using the snip it tool at least on PC and then Pasted to where you want. Always giving credit to the source where you found the time line….

the problem is when one does not do their research, and there are errors, those are still shared.. so basically the tree is wrong and erroneous. This was exactly what happened to me, my ancestor was adopted so his date of birth is not available but he is connected to the person who adopted him. the genealogy line should therefore be stopped but it continues with the adopters as if he was the blood relatives. Too much errors not enough verifications.
I try to focus on doing the best I can do. Also, I write in my research notes the resolutions to the conflicts so others can find it. Hopefully that will help. Life is too short to try and fix others mistakes.
