- People always ask if I even USE a cage for my budgie Blueberry since they NEVER see him in one (unless we are traveling, then they see his carrier!) and since I wasn't happy with the original recommendation from the petshop for his cage (and found myself not using it, and instead creating enabling environments for him through our foraging playstands all over the house) I wasn't about to show a cage I wasn't fond of or using.
But then I made BIG PLANS for Blueberry on having the ultimate space (the porch!!!) since I can't rotate him in my usual aviaries (I recently had those all lifted onto casters and it leaves too much space at the bottom for him to crawl right out!) ... so when Omlet approached me about trying out their enclosure, I thought it would fit perfectly in our home and be a great safe place to try out for when we can't have Blueberry out and about.

Since my budgie is out on our open spaces all the time, we really only have to use our Omlet cage when Blueberry CANNOT be out due to safety reasons and all we do is put his favorite toys and meals in there, and he's super content. Having a budgie free-roaming a lot tends to be much easier for me compared to my medium and large birds who are much more destructive. I'm loving the tiny bird antics!!

You need to be a super responsible parent to make sure your daughter listens and respects to "bird rules" of the home. And the fact you can have a young child growing up in your household around so many birds, and still keep them all safe, says a lot about what a great parent you are ❤❤❤.

I agree. Best (most informative, most enjoyable) parrot site on the internet if you ask me. 20 years ago (before the internet) I had a cockatiel that I loved beyond measure. He only ate seed, his only trick was whistling Beethoven's 5th Symphony. He has a good life but not the best life. Because of birdtricks our cockatiels now eat veggies, pellets, are trained to do all kinds of things including harness and recall trained. They are healthy, happy and rarely bored. We are part of their flock. I think bird lives across the nation are better because of this channel and what better goal is there then that!

I had them for years & was a great experience. (Miniature Diamond Doves as well as Love birds. No parrots.) We have four kids so that takes most of our time plus 2 dogs & 2 cats. Maybe again in the future after a few fly the coop. 😉

Thanks for the great review on the omelet cage. I bought one a couple of months ago and my budgie really loves it. I bought and returned the vision cage after finding the omelet cage. My budgie actually goes up to his swing in the evening to roost at night, hence...no need for a corner to sleep in. Thanks for confirming that I made a good decision in purchasing my cage from Omelet!
It's so interesting because I just had a leaflet in my hand the other day by the German Animal Welfare Federation about budgies and canaries and it had this misinformation, too! I literally stopped short when I read that because it didn't make any sense to me at first, but as you said, it's those ancient decorative cages that are harmful, not round cages in general. But the leaflet also said to give your budgies a seed diet, which I was also shocked to read after following your videos for a while now. 🙄 Anyway, I believe there are still a lot of myths around how to keep and feed your bird, so hopefully your videos will help spread the word around eventually. But this was so great! I wanted to screen in my porch for my featherbabies this summer but unfortunately it didn't happen. Hopefully next year. At least our Comet and Bubba bread mixes should arrive today and we can begin our process to a better and healthier diet! Yay! 🙃❤😁

I'm retired now and have a rescued feral cat. Always had small birds. Budgies and a conure. They all passed in time and I ended up with a barn cat and she would look at them as toys or dinner.
But I have watched this lady's videos. She has dedicated her life to birds. Their health, their habits and training. Any of her advice to me is nothing but the best. Follow her advice, and you will have a healthy, well trained and happy bird for you and your family.
You will always will have people that will criticize her advice. But to me those are people who sell something she advices against or just internet complainers.
Look at what she does and what she has done with birds and use your own common sense whose advice you will follow.
People are so bananas about round cages. It's so weird. Glad someone said something.
Oh, and I’ve been buying old vintage bird cages in thrift stores and antique stores and hanging them as decorations, putting plants in them and such. I even used one as a card holder for my wedding table :). So you’re right, those old style round ones are only good for decor. But this Omlet (is that how you spell it?) one is not like the old vintage ones

My bridies live in an aviary but ive been looking for a bigger travelcage so they can come on holidays with me, have to look into that one.
That’s because it isn’t a round cage, it’s an aviary..aviaries are HUGE so there’s no problem for them being round, meanwhile the omlet cage is far too small and can cause injuries for the birds as they can get their limbs stuck in the bar spacing( which is mentioned in the video, but it still could be a possibility with the omlet cage but I’m not talking about the omlet cage, just round cages in general) I think something this person forgets is that round aviaries are not the same as small round bird cages, the omlet cage is not suitable for any bird in my opinion and it’s stupidly expensive when you can get something much suitable for a cheaper price.
I do understand this video also talked about the cages I’m talking about currently (the round decor cages which the omlet cage is also an “aesthetically pleasing” cage meant for purely aesthetics) but it still doesn’t make the omlet cage necessarily good.. (The person in this video has also stated to wanting cages to be aesthetically pleasing which seems to be why she chose this cage, she’s also claimed to clipping her bird’s wings which I’m also against as you shouldn’t get a pet that flies if you don’t want it to..fly..but she has stopped doing that so that’s fine by me)
Overall I personally wouldn’t recommend round cages like this as it isn’t really good for the birds and it’s far too small. But if you TRULY think that your bird is LOVING the enclosure it’s in (you actually need to understand bird body language) then you can absolutely keep it..I suppose I just think the bird can do better and bigger and that’s what you should always be heading for. Also the omlet cage in particular is stupidly expensive whereas other large and wide flight cages are much cheaper.
Honestly If you DO have this cage and you’re providing as much space as this person is then you CAN have this cage as a full-time home I suppose.. (it still wouldn’t provide that much enrichment as you can’t stuff much into this cage and it’s STILL far too small for any bird, the vision cage this lady had was way better than the one shown here aKa the omlet cage) but if you are locking your bird most of the time in an enclosure like this, then no, it would be cruel and unsuitable.
Just please make sure that your bird actually ENJOYS its enclosure by noticing its body language (not just guessing off the top of your head) I do doubt any bird would enjoy an enclosure like this let alone a single one like Blueberry here (guessing she has no other budgie to interact with which is another pet peeve of mine as budgies in particular are very social)
I love the look of the omelette cage though, reminds me of a TV game show I used to watch in the 90s on British TV called crystal maze.

I was super sceptical of this cage! Round cages are typically tiny, painfully small with poorly placed feeding bowls and did I mention tiny? Tweety bird cage is exactly what they are, I've seen u2s in them :( those cages should burn, if I ever won millions of dollars I would seriously go out and buy all the round cages and burn them! Along with the tall helicopter cages

I use the vision cage in Large which is wider than the one you have but only half the height. I love it cause I keep my Parrotlet in my room and that particular cage keeps all the mess inside the cage which I love !!! My little guy loves it!

This is literally the only round cage i've seen (i wouldn't even consider it round) that is manufacturered in a way that could still be used for a bird. Most are WAY too small and exactly how you described, like the tweety cages. However, the price point for this cage is over priced. For the same price you can get a prevue large flight cage 30 1/4 x 20 1/4 x 40 inches and for 40 you can get the finch you and me cage which is 30 x18x18. I wish everyone could afford to be the bird owner you are, because you truly do get your birds the best of the best
So this isn't to be rude or anything, but she pointed out how Blue didnt use all of the space of the bigger cage for one thing. If its a high quality cage and both you AND your bird thoroughly love it, for the price it is, that is REALLY not expensive. I mean I'm also talking about when it comes to owning a bird in general. They are one of if not the most expensive pets you can choose to own. I read not long ago that "you can either have a bird or a bank account". Lol
A parrot is an investment, no matter the size. From a budgie or cockatiel to a macaw or African Grey. You need to realize that when deciding to purchase/adopt one. So their cage or sometimes expensive foraging trees (that you can get creative and make your own for much much less actually) that are the parts of their environment and their shelter, AND are also meant to/expected to last for years and years, shouldn't be considered something you don't invest a good amount in.
When you bought yourself a bed or couch did you just buy whichever was the cheapest and biggest or did you actually pay more money and get yourself something that was comfortable for you?
If you can't afford to provide for your bird or any pet the way it should be provided for and deserves to be, then you should reconsider whether or not you should have that pet.
Once again this wasn't to be rude or wasn't meaning "you" as in YOU but a general YOU because you're right, not everyone can afford to do what Jamie does and other people do. I know I can't afford a large macaw myself and afford a huge expensive cage and all of the expenses for that size of a bird. So knowing that I wouldn't go and buy the macaw and then try to get whatever cage was the next best thing for him and basically just be selfish because I want the bigger bird with the much bigger expenses. Anyway... im not sure what shape you would call this... it is a round/dome shaped cage. And is also NOT the only one out there. Unless you live under a rock or something. Definitely not a square or rectangle or triangle. Not sure what you're seeing. Anyway. Hope you take that stuff into consideration maybe when you're looking into any purchase for your featherbaby.

The cage i usually recommend people is a finch you and me cage which is all about length not height and all space is utilized, but the price point is 40 dollars instead of 129. The 40 dollar cage also is quality, and the space is utilized and any bird i've known to be in it loves it. I'm also not going to fully read your long comment, just don't think you're understanding what i'm trying to say. The small cage is awesome for her because of her life style and blue is able to be free a lot of the times, but for 129 dollars you could get a high quality LARGE flight cage which was my point of not recommending it for your average owner. Not everyone can be like her as much as we wish we could. Birds are her job, and most people have normal jobs and I would feel bad leaving a bird in that small cage for 8 hours 5 days a week. (that's not even my work, but i'm saying for an average person).
@@scarlson325 24.6" L X 15.6" W X 34.3" H is the vision cage so yeah, not much length, a lot of height not being utilized and it's very narrow. I've never been a fan of vision cages and believe them to be over priced garbage as well. Just because something is cheaper or expensive = better / or worse quality. The cage dimensions is what matters when looking into a cage.
@@scarlson325 long story short.. for a 129 dollars i'd just rather buy a large flight cage or recommend the average person to purchase a large flight cage than a smaller ball shaped cage for the same price just because most people don't have a job revolving around their birds / birds in general. Being in a large budgie group I see a lot of the "average budgie owners" and their birds probably spend a lot more time in their cage than exploring like blue does, so if you think of the cage as their room and a place they spend most of their time, you'd want it to be as big as you can afford. The prevue brand isn't low quality and that kinda seems like what you're insinuating here.

i gotta admit, i've been one to support the "round cages" myth... but also, i was mainly considering the "tweety bird" cages. stuff like "they need corners" i just shrugged and "well i guess so..." but i've never heard the "they get lost and just go round and round" before... i feel like a lot of it was probably just stuff made up to justify why round cages are better to stop people from using the tweety bird cages.
glad to see something that finally disproves the "round cage" thing. the Omlet Geo cages really seems to do everything well (except assembly... lol). i wouldn't mind assembling it, but i'm the handy type who loves doing that stuff.

Love my new Omlet cage, and so do my two parakeets. The only drawback was, as you mentioned, assembling it. But my teenager did it for me, so - no problems there for me!
I’ve seen bloggers and tiktokers get bullied and nasty comments for using these cages, even when they aren’t even the only cages in use! It’s just so mean. Thanks for spreading truth!

Very interesting POV. I've used rectangular and square cages. I use rope perches to give more options of moving around, but I did notice my Jax would usually stay in one spot in the cage.
So cute how well trained .I have 2 make parakeets in same cage and they love each other . I heard yrs back not to do. I love them together. I enjoy when they fly in of cage . No tricks m tho , just chip/ tweet all day . 😊

I wound't call your aviaries round personally because they have corners, the main issue people have with round cages is that there are no corners to hide + it's often way harder to place perches and toys without taking up tons of space. Because the Omlet cage, and your aviaries, still have corners, they aren't the same as the things people often get worked up about. (round cages that are tall and skinny with no corners at all)
I looked at the Omlet cage, and my main concern is that there isn't a lot of space for flying, which my budgies LOVE to do in their cage. A budgie's cage should be at least 18"x18" so they can fly back and forth inside. Other than that it seems like a good cage, but I don't like the plastic dishes, stainless steel is a much better alternative.

I'm going to be building a 4x5 indoor aviary for my two budgies soon, any recommendations for softer toy materials? Mine like vine balls/stars, seagrass, crinckle paper, and cardboard, but I want to find they some toys with more variation. (They're super light chewers, they haven't destroyed a block of balsa yet lol)

Have you tried sola wood? It’s significantly softer than balsa. Or you could try Bird Kabobs, which are made of yucca wood.
@@Psittacine23 I haven't tried them yet because I don't want my dogs to pick up a dropped piece and eat it (yucca makes dogs sick) I'm moving soon and the birds will have their own room, so I think I'll try them out then.
You say budgies should have 18"×18" but the omlet cage is 24"×24". I agree about the plastic dishes though
I mean, to be fair, she has a porch where he can fly, a bunch of play stands and trees to fly around, and he's indoor free flighted. She also filmed a video on a routine, where he's out making breakfast and taking a shower and flying around, so he gets his exercise and flying pleasure from there. They also work from home, so yeah.
Not a fan of round cages as a rule. Not going to preach or make a stink over it as every bird owner has to make their own choices. But, if you can have a non round one it's generally better in almost every way for a bird (even if it is big).
Also that cage is more of a hexagon lol So it doesn't suffer many of the issues that the traditional round/"bell" cages do.
Also why get a round cage when there are so many more suitable ones which allow for more exercise, better perch and enrichment attachment and functionality. Have to agree that round cages are still a no-no for me!

I love the Omlet cage. I have two canaries and they are thriving in it. Bonus is that seed never ends up outside of the cage. So that's pretty good also.
I really enjoyed assembling it. The instructions are clear and I found it to be extremely satisfying watching it all come together. Such a clever concept.
I've heard that "round cage" argument for years. My Quaker had a HUGE square cage we call The Condo, that like Blueberry, only used the top third. Got her a round gage, put in manzanita branches and toys and she's never been happier! As for being able to navigate, yeah, just try and touch her stuff and see how fast she'll get to ya!

I live in an old (American old, 1840's) house. Of the doors that close, nothing fits under or around them. That is what thresholds do.
It’s a newer house thing. I live in an American city with lots of older homes (San Francisco) and no land to build on, whereas Jamie and her family live in a newer home in a town that has a lot of newer subdivisions because that’s where people move to now. Whereas you all in Europe have lived there for centuries and don’t have tons of new land to build onto like we do here in the US. If you come here to a city with lots of older homes, the doors come all the way to the ground because the doors are made 100 years ago. It’s just a new construction thing to have a door that is hollow and doesn’t go all the way to the ground
@@dorkusamericanusRight but why would the door be short when any time ive bought a door to replace an internal one, its been taller than the doorway to had to be trimmed to fit... i figured it was likely either odd size doorway or someone table sawing an inch of the bottom or top to save time fitting
I'm not a fan of the classical round cages for many reasons but I liked the Omelets cage design more but they are to small to be legal where I live (In Sweden the smallest legal cage for birds up to 20cm (like Budgies and smaller birds) have to be 70cm long, 60cm high and 45 cm wide).
The only round cages that I disagree with is the ones that are so narrow and only one perch can be put in instead of two and the bird basically has one perch and can't hop back and forth although other perches can be out higher or lower and the bird can fly up and down. The lower perches, toys and food get pooped on. If it large enough like this one then it's fine. Also the small narrow round cages can have tight bars at the top where they connect and the birds claws and toes get stuck in them.

I know there is a war on circle fish tanks, so perhaps the people think it applies to all animal enclosures? The reasoning I keep hearing for the tanks is because the fish will start swimming in one direction, and just keep going in a circle forever. They don't see this as enriching as a squared off tank, where the fish has to change direction once it gets to a wall, and I guess think more about where it wants to go next, and feel the urge to explore.
KT circular fish tanks also usually mean that fish have no places to hide, or that humans looking in are distorted - not issues with birds as much
*unrelated to birds* The door thing is actually really interesting, because here in Sweden they are flush to the floor. My Dad has a theory that it's because in countries where you can have hurricanes/tornados/massive storms doors are elevated to allow the pressure inside the rooms to (what's it called??) increase and decrease(?) more smoothly.
Typically, they are to accommodate for carpets/tile. Not all houses have gaps as large as that though.
But if that room is ever carpeted, they could just lay it down, or else the door would have to be removed and shaved up to fit it. ✌️
That’s pretty funny cuz my parrotlet really plays the most top to bottom and some side to side, mostly in the front.
Then again...he’s not a typical parrotlet-in every aspect.
My birds liked their Geo. I used the you tube video instructions to put it together the second time, four birds 2 Geo cages. I also have an extra-large flight cage.

I just personally dislike that cage because I feel like most people can’t have their budgies out ten hours a day and i like to give my birdies really big play style flight cages. Also I see it working fine for a tame bird, but being difficult to work with a super skittish one.
Yea because blueberry can be out all the time with Jamie as she does this has her job it works for her. But I think it shouldn’t be recommended to other bird owners. I use a flight cage for my budgies

Yes, a 2 feet by 1 foot or 2 feet by 1.5 feet is ideal for a breeding cage
I like the round cage even though I have a long (up & down) 48" x 31" x 21". Im with you. Assemblage is a pain. I had to ask my son to help (actually do the whole thing). So my birdies do spend time outside the cage most of the day. Even though this is an old video, it was still helpful. Thanks!♥️🐦🐦🐦♥️
The information about the cages is very interesting and sensible. Your porch sounds like the jungle! Blueberry is such a smart little cutie.
My budgie has a round topped cage, the biggest problem with it is that its very vertical. When he is in the cage, which honestly isn't very often, he uses the whole space. That being said AS SOON as I saw the omelet cage I wanted one, it just hasn't been a priority. So I'm really glad that you chimed in on this cage.
I have a cage like the square one. When I saw this one, I was very interested in it. I have also had the problem of parts of the cage not being utilized and I'm thinking of checking out the Omlet cage.

I hate my tall cage for my budgie...it isnt stainless & as I'm in Florida...majority of time outside in screened in pool area...
The cage has rusty connections!!! Awful!!

No comments on round vs other shape cages, caging or not. My comment is on how beautiful it was to see Dave and Capri putting Blueberry's cage together. It reminded me how my dad gave me a love of building, fixing, and tinkering. Capri is a lot more girly than me, but those shots are really precious. Love Maren and Rascal

You have helped a lot of people who have birds and that of people who are doing a ton of research on birds before making a choice and commitment ( like me)

37 yrs ago I had the tweety bird round cage for 2 budgies. I feel bad but we didn't know back then. Thankfully we tamed them and they were able to fly around the house. The omelet cage is large and much better than the tweety cage. I have an a&e cage about 33 long by 21 wide. My 2 birds love it.

I was against the round cages but those one that looks like the tweety cage . I love the that little blue is using and enjoying and thanks for your opinion on this messed up topic. 💕
I have the vision cage, the taller model you have and my four budgies use all the space. They even do short flight. It's depend on how you arrange the space with toys and perchs. I use natural branchs I find in the woods. For the bottom, I put oat branch and they can foranging it for hours!

My budgies have the entire Florida room, they love it! They can use it year round. It also has an attached screen porch that they get access to.

I think people generalize that circular/cylindrical enclosures are bad for all animals. We are told not to have circular/cylindrical tanks for fish and then people assume it is bad for birds as well without substantial evidence.

Very interesting video, I loved it, and the Omlet cage! I was a little excited to hear the name Onlet, and wondered if it was the same company that is literally 5 miles away from me that I pass twice a day, every day. And it IS! I was surprised to be honest, as they set out a few years ago offering special chicken houses for gardens, complete with (I think?) 3 chickens! So, either they’ve really expanded their range since I heard about them OR they’ve always offered things for birds other than chickens that was not made obvious. I believe it to be the former. Once again, JamieLeigh, excellent video. If I get a budgie, I know I don’t have to travel far to collect it’s bedroom ❤️
I have a homemade cage and they like it so much they go flying back into it when I tell them to they also utilize all the space in the cage including the bottom which is pretty rare for birds but they love it down They also love my floor which means I have to watch my step
I’m someone who had read that round cages were bad for birds because they stressed them. I’m glad to now know the truth. I don’t own birds but thoroughly enjoy your channel and am learning more about birds each time you post.

I have to say that at 11:18, this is how my how my apartment is set up I've got a big old wooden toys playground for them wings and round round literally frame frame for for a lamp post for them to hang on and all kinds of fun things thank you for showing me your place I know I'm doing the right thing with my Birds now!
The omelet cage is pretty and looks roomy enough for Blueberry. I think the round cage myth started with the Bird Man of Alcatraz. He said that a bird kept in a round cage would go crazy, like a person trapped in a round room with no corners to give the person some direction. Maybe he just didn't have enough enrichment in the cage or maybe the cages were too small. Either way, what you said made sense. As long as the round cage is big enough and you have plenty of enrichment, what's wrong with round cages? Thank you for this video, I'm learning so much about birds from you guys! My cockatiel Jewel will be so happy that someone is teaching me!

Wow your out door porch setup is amazing! I used to have a hand raised budgie and he used to get out under my door because he lived primarily in my room with a nighttime cage, until I had to put a draft stopper under my door!
At first when I only had one budgie, I used the Vision large single-height cage. It wasn't nearly as tall as yours, but it was slightly larger in length/width. I got a second budgie and kept the cage, and I also used the same kind of cage when I got two linnies. My birds were let out in my room almost 100% of the time so the size definitely worked. When I moved for a summer job they couldn't be out so I upgraded to Prevue Hendryx flight cage for both by budgies and my linnies. I'm actually really happy with it. It comes apart easily and lies flat if I need to transport it, it's on wheels when constructed, and it has a nice length and width to it. The height is also nice, but as you said, it's unused by my birds. All it really does is offer a bit more space between my birds and their droppings. I wish the cage was designed to go sideways, because then it would be massive for my birds.
Right now for my linnies (I have 3) I managed to make the incredibly lucky score of getting a Ferplast double decker cage, which is huge!! Much longer and wider and taller than even the PH cages. But I leave it split in two instead of using the entire space because again, my birds never use the lower half.
Also appreciate you talking about round cages. It makes me roll my eyes when I see the knee-jerk reaction on some facebook bird groups I'm a part of. Safely (bar pinching) is really the main concern with round cages, and then the second concern is if you have enough space to put in multiple separated perches. I think this myth was started with a video of Pebble yelling as her owner smashed a small round cage, saying how round cages are bad.

canucks only no he is an ex racer pigeon my dads friend had too many and they continued to uncontrollably breed, I have had him for a while now his always flying outside and escaping.
My four budgies, Sweet pie, Banana, Einstein and Tesla have the entire living room for their cage! I've got two little cages that sit there with the doors open all the time and if they feel like if they go in there if they don't they stay out!
Where do you find those stand perches you have in the living room and porch? They are beautiful

Thank you so much for this video, I really like this cage, but I almost bought one similar to your taller one….cos I thought it would have been bigger, but since you are saying Blue is happier in the dome and utilises the space better, I am going to go for that one! We work from home and don’t have any other pets, so our budgie will be spending most time outside the cage anyway…and I like that is also pretty…not many cages are! I have just discovered your channel and I am binging your videos, so so helpful!!!
What a great video. I love that you have a budgie and train and discuss all aspects of the care and enrichment of the bird. Realistically, this is the right bird for most people! But though small, they have just as much "personality" as larger birds. Thank you for this time and interest in this species you added to your flock!

Put a weather strip along the bottoms of your doors and that should solve the escaping

I got the You & Me Finch Flight cage from Petco for about $40 and my bird LOVES it. I can put a lot of perches and toys in there but he still has room to fly around. He gets the zoomies and flies back and forth for several minutes at a time. It's 30x18x18 inches. Super easy to clean because it has several doors for access.
