Hey Jamie. Hopefully you don't misunderstand my intentions but you don't need to wait a year to tell a budgies gender 😊 typically you'll be able to tell definitely by 6-8 weeks old. The various mutations might make it a bit difficult for some individuals but I guess I owned budgies all my life so I can easily tell. From your community picture that you posted of Capri and Blueberry, I can tell easily that Blueberry is 100% a female 😇

Blueberry's cere is developing exactly how a female budgie's cere usually develops-- it starts out rose-colored, then it turns white-ish with sometimes light blue mixed into it before turning light brown and then a darker brown. You can already see hints of Blueberry's cere turning lightly brown. If Blueberry were a male, the cere would turn from rose-colored to purple to blue.

She‘s actually calling for other budgies. This struck me, too. Those are definitely calls to locate other birds/friends/mate/etc. Budgies are so incredibly social, and "robbing" them of a friend of the same species will definitely inpact their quality of life. Now I have no doubt little Blueberry is having a good life, please don't take this the wrong way! It's just that, the bigger the flock, the happier the budgies are, usually. And having a friend who speaks your own language is so incredibly important for budgies. They can just as easliy be tamed even if you have more than one.

We miss him so very much as he was such a beautiful and friendly bird. He cuddled my husband more than me but I just adored watching him. I don't think we gave him the 'healthiest' life and he acted a lot slower and put weight on for the last 3 years, but to get him to 8 was amazing and we were too nervous to change his food etc. because he'd never been sick. My favourite part of watching Blueberry was definitely seeing him/her talking to the birds outside. Bobby used to do this and I miss his sweet singing the most. Fabulous, fabulous creatures and a great pet for everyone.

Both my Pet Shop Budgies were flighted when I got them and I believe it made it more challenging to tame and train them because the could fly away easily. Do you think Blue tamed quicker because he wasn't flighted and therefore dependent upon you to get him place to place those first crucial days? Also, just a safety tip for small birds. I forego shoes when my birds are loose. Then I can feel them by my feet and am more aware to not step on them. Thanks.

lovely..... budgies are native birds here in Australia. They're green in colour and usually in large flocks... so they're very social.

My 2 budgies, males we believe, that we have had for 2 months still are to scared to leave their cage and I have tried every budgie taming video, they are even to scared to eat millet if I put it in their cage and I started moving around

    • @mangotango4529
      @mangotango4529 4 роки тому +5

Are they scared of the millet or your hand when you put it in? If they’re scared of the actual millet you might want to just put it near their cage for a few days or even on top of their cage so they know that it’s not anything scary and after that try putting it in the inside edge of their cage. I did this with my birds since they used to be freaked out of a certain toy I had for them but I know that they would love it if they weren’t scared and now they do love the toy after I did that

My experience w/parakeets &/or budgies. Seeing how young Blueberry is & the “bleaching” around the cere “nostrils”, I’d say that “he” is a “she”... most young budgie/keets have a purplish or blue to their ceres (think noses or nostrils) but with more white out or “bleaching” is usually indicates a female.
I look forward to more videos of Blueberry, so adorable!

    Okay so two questions
1: does blueberry have a cage?
2: if not how does he get 12 hours of sleep in the living room on a foraging tree?
I ask because I have been having a hard time finding a quiet spot in the house where my parrotlet can get 12 hours of uninterrupted sleep due to the noise my family makes around the house .

Blueberry has the life! I had a yellow budgie named Bananas who was a girl for sure and she was the sweetest! I loved her so much and would love to have another one, but I have four rescue cats and wouldn't be able to let a budgie out the cage and I would never have a bird I couldn't let be free and out of the cage all day. 😘

Blueberry calls out to other budgies. She really need one. Humans can't be a budgies flock, because we may understand their calls, but we are not able to answer the way they need. Please get another budgie as soon as possible. Yes, your daughter maybe won't be happy, when Blueberry stops being so much with her. But it's for the health of the birds and I'm sure, you will be able to tame both. Budgies don't behave like bigger parrots. I can understand the behavior of budgies, I even recognize their different calls, but I can't understand your other birds. That is not bad. You seem doing so good with those other birds, but maybe you just haven't learned to understand a budgie yet. It really takes time. Please get a second one. Watch them. Their interaction. Their calls. You will understand, that there is something, a human just can't give to a budgie. And believe me, their mental and social wellbeing is so important.

I love Budgies! I am so happy you got one and are showing they can be nice pets. ❤
    A few other things...
It would be good to encourage the bird to use more very skiny perches as that helps strengthen foot grip and balance, which is healthier than most of your thicker perches.
Waiting a year to gender you bird might not tell you anything new. Your bird has light blue cere with white around the nostrils, it is a female and won't become a male royal blue. However, not all females enter into breeding condition where they get the brown or crusty cere, so if you were waiting on that, it might not happen either. And a lot of females who are content never lay eggs. So your Blueberry might not ever develop to anything much different than what she already is, the definite female of a light blue cere with white around the nostrils.
I don't know if you can educate your cute daughter that the bird is likely female, light blue is girls royal blue is boys, but I would like to see you learn and show for her as well as your novice viewers. 🙂

Jamieleigh, how intelligent would you say that budgies are in comparison to their larger parrot cousins? I am going to get a bird companion, and I'm aware that budgies are substantially easier to manage than larger parrots (which is not to say that I think they're an 'easy option' - I realise that they still need a lot of time, effort, mental stimulation, etc in order to be happy). I was given a budgie as a birthday present by a misguided, but well meaning Aunt, when I was 6 years old, and kept him until he passed away 10 years later, which was absolutely heart breaking. (I'm 42 now). I totally fell in love with the little guy - trained him to fly from the cage to my shoulder, and he would ride around the house in my shirt pocket. So, I know well that budgies have a level of personality and character totally out of proportion to their physical stature.
Being older and wiser now, I could cope with a bird a rung or two up the size ladder, and yet I'm still tempted to go with what I already know. The factors which are most important to me in a companion animal are intelligence and 'interactivity'. Basically, to know that the bird knows who I am, and treats me differently than it would any random person. If the bird is capable of learning a few words, that would be fantastic, but by no means necessary. I would really like a bird that I can pet as well (head scritches only of course).
Which species do you think I should choose, between Budgie, Cockatiel, and GC Conure? Or do you think I should consider another species altogether? I would be extremely grateful for any advice which you could give me (this also goes for any other experienced bird owners who feel like chiming in). Thanks very much! Cheers. 😊 😃🐦

First decide what kind of poop can you tolerate, then decide where will all the packages of seed, pellets ( spare bags of pellets they won’t eat), treat sticks, extra perches, travel cage, extra toys, piles of newspaper for bedding, large box of millet (because buying small bits is overpriced), sick cage, cage cleaning supplies, bird swings, bird bath equipment, medical box, play gym, chopping veg equipment, spare food water bowls. Things that you buy by mistake that are substandard, because, it’s near impossible to find good products for birds in the pet store, at least, that is what I found. Food dishes that are too deep. Water dishes with no perch attached. Fake formed perches that badly mimic a natural branch. All this not even, including the cage ( this is just budgie size stuff, larger things for conures and cockatiels). Oh, you also would do well to have basic wood working equipment to make a better play gym or adapt one and make natural perches from safe branches, so you will need the hardware. Keep in mind, I have heard of very few bird sitters for when you want to leave town. Look into that first before getting a bird. Ask at your local private bird store, for bird sitters. This is just a start, google the pros and cons of each bird you are thinking of, then weigh the choices. Consider how long the average life of the bird is as well. Most would want to get a young bird and you would not know the sex. If you end up with a female, you will need fake eggs, which you can order online. Then there will be long stretches where your bird is not available, nurturing her fake eggs...This is just a snippet, of what you will encounter. The bird whichever you choose, will bring you joy, but, also challenge you greatly.
