    Insane to win a State championship at 160 as a Freshman much less in Iowa. I honestly don't remember seeing a single Freshman qualifier my Junior or Senior year at 160 and 171 (NC) and if there were any above 145 it was rare and they weren't stand out. Great content btw.

      I wrestled as late as 2016 in Iowa. Young guys win state at 106-138. It is very impressive what Ben did at his weight

    • @ws8061
      @ws8061 Рік тому +6

      @@Ronald-qs1pn yeah I think winning States as a Freshman from 145-171 is probably more impressive than in any other weight classes. It's just that sweet spot where Guy's are big and strong but still really technical too and 99.99% of underclassmen that size just don't have a chance. So impressive.

    • @samclements3594
      @samclements3594 Рік тому +1

      complete novice here, why is it more impressive at a certain weight more than the others?

    • @shar9883
      @shar9883 Рік тому +4

      @@samclements3594 At low weights the field is generally younger so if you win as a freshman you are often winning against other underclassmen. To win at a higher weight class as a freshman he has to beat out other bigger guys that are typically older. So when he won state as a freshman he was probably wrestling against juniors and seniors

It will be interesting to see how it plays out for him but he's got the size, frame, and athleticism for football and there's no better work ethic in sports than a wrestler so I don't see why it wouldn't work if he can stay injury free on the ball field.

We played in the same high school baseball system at City High (who's head coach is Dan Gable's son inlaw lol) I never played on the same team as him but last year, I was on his brother's team. He could do pretty much everything except for pitch because of his tremendous athleticism. And despite that, he was always good natured and cheerful. I'm seeing a lot of show boating winners, and temper tantrum loses from many Wrestlers out there. In the 1980s we still shook hands were polite about our excitement or humility. Ben shows this on the mat. I can see the disappointment in his eyes when he wins and his opponent slaps his hand and walks away. Someone, a very good person, taught this young man some morals. @@fabes326 watch the first few minutes. That would s what I am referring to.. forgot about the greatest generation of 4 timers in Iowa in the 80's. Like they never happened. This what the height of Iowa High school wrestling. When Iowa , Iowa State and UNI dominated college wrestling. And Junior Nationals in the 80's!

      @@mg6311 those guys you mentioned, did they finish their high school career undefeated? If not, they shouldn’t have been mentioned. If so, they should’ve gotten a mention.
      By the way, for sake of this video, what they did in college has no relevance.

      I'd say it's because those four timers weren't undefeated or did anything else significant compared to the ones already mentioned

    Ben has a great genetic advantage over most kids. Had he not taken up athletics, which is hard to imagine, the coaches would have nagged him throughout his high-school years. How many minutes did he spend on the mat during the tournament this year? This video suggests it wasn't many. I miss the wrestling in Iowa, but also the great supermarkets like HyVee.

    I wish Ben all the success in the world. I just fear his football could hurt his wrestling. Sure football has more money, but this guy seems like a Dan Hodge award winning, NCAA champion and maybe just maybe even Gold Medalist type winner guy.

    Unrelated story, I actually went to Roosevelt with John Meeks and had a single class with him my sophomore year (he was a senior at the time). I remember talking to him and asking about wrestling and he told me a story of when where he was at a mental low point in his career. He had a close wrestling friend from SouthEast Polk High School (can't remember his name for the life of me) who went undefeated his freshman - junior year. During his friend's senior year, John told me that there was a controversial call made by the ref who was judging his friend's match. It ended up as a loss and was the only match his friend didn't win during his high school career. John told me that his friend not being there with him in their 4 time state champ/undefeated journey really messed with him mentally.
    But, John ended up going undefeated and became a legendary 4 time champion, so he was obviously able to power through it.
    Great video. I recognized SO much. Being an Iowan native myself. Especially Jordan Creek Mall. I'd recognize that place ANY day of the week. Lol

    Oh HELL no. Dan Gable. *mic drop* Undefeated in high school, three time state champion, 117-1 in college, Olympic Gold, and then 355-21 as a coach in college dual meets. There is NOTHING that Gable didn't do..locally, collegiate, and internationally.
