Insane to win a State championship at 160 as a Freshman much less in Iowa. I honestly don't remember seeing a single Freshman qualifier my Junior or Senior year at 160 and 171 (NC) and if there were any above 145 it was rare and they weren't stand out. Great content btw.
@@Ronald-qs1pn yeah I think winning States as a Freshman from 145-171 is probably more impressive than in any other weight classes. It's just that sweet spot where Guy's are big and strong but still really technical too and 99.99% of underclassmen that size just don't have a chance. So impressive.
@@samclements3594 At low weights the field is generally younger so if you win as a freshman you are often winning against other underclassmen. To win at a higher weight class as a freshman he has to beat out other bigger guys that are typically older. So when he won state as a freshman he was probably wrestling against juniors and seniors
Harvey Ludington won the Nj state tourney at 175 pounds as freshman. Watch out for this kid in NCAA's and beyond! 1 state champ per weight class, still the best high school state tourney in the nation. no multiple champ clown shows

I wrestled John Meeks from Roosevelt when I was a sophmore at Dowling. IT was my first varsity match and his final season. Pinned me in a minute thirty. Meeks went on to win his 4th state title and undefeated. Very enlightening experience.
The fact that they got the cameraman to try to win that game in the mall had me rolling!!🤣 reminds me of the shit me and my friends used to do, Ben and that whole team look to be like amazing people honestly!
I wrestle middle school going into hs in Cedar Rapids next year, and I strive to work as hard as this dude, Spencer Lee and Ben have to be the two people I look up to the most, I can't wait to see him wrestling at iowa while I am working hard in hs.

I don't think I've ever seen a guy committed to a big D1 for wrestling and football like he is. It will be interesting to see how it plays out for him but he's got the size, frame, and athleticism for football and there's no better work ethic in sports than a wrestler so I don't see why it wouldn't work if he can stay injury free on the ball field.

I really don't want to be the guy to use him as my claim to fame, but I know this guy. We played in the same high school baseball system at City High (who's head coach is Dan Gable's son inlaw lol) I never played on the same team as him but last year, I was on his brother's team. He could do pretty much everything except for pitch because of his tremendous athleticism. And despite that, he was always good natured and cheerful. Nobody deserves what he's earned more than he does. With that being said... I did strike him out in a scrimmage once...
Brian Mitchell, the son in law. I babysat the three Mitchell men, and have great memories. No need to have been paid for any of it. I love that family.
I'm seeing a lot of show boating winners, and temper tantrum loses from many Wrestlers out there. In the 1980s we still shook hands were polite about our excitement or humility. Ben shows this on the mat. I can see the disappointment in his eyes when he wins and his opponent slaps his hand and walks away. Someone, a very good person, taught this young man some morals. We could use a million more like him in this country.
He's definitely awesome and will be fun to watch in college, however there are some other awesome athletes from Iowa that were dominate in HS wrestling and other sports. For instance Brian Moretz was a 3 time state champion in wrestling at heavyweight, 2 time all state 1st team in football, and a state champion in shot put as a sophomore (and didn't participate his junior or senior years in track and field.) He was also an amazing baseball player too.

I wrestled in the 50# and 60# weight classes in Nebraska grade school. At State Tourney I was beat by Winky Smith in 17 seconds. He was so much better than me, so fast. I was undefeated before the tournament.
He can be beat if he will be when he gets to college but he is great no doubt and seems like a very balanced young man personality wise.... Great parenting

You forgot a handful of 4 timers in the 80's after Jeff Kerber. Scott Morningstar, NCAA champ Joe Gibbons, Greg Randall who were all standouts. He has 4-5 years in college to prove he is up there with the greats. There were 3 timers and others who were 3 time NCAA champs like Jim Zalesky and Barry Davis from CR Prairie and the Brands brothers with Olympic medals. Don't put him on a list with the all time greats until he reaches those heights.

Ben has a great genetic advantage over most kids. Had he not taken up athletics, which is hard to imagine, the coaches would have nagged him throughout his high-school years. How many minutes did he spend on the mat during the tournament this year? This video suggests it wasn't many. I miss the wrestling in Iowa, but also the great supermarkets like HyVee.

Unrelated story, I actually went to Roosevelt with John Meeks and had a single class with him my sophomore year (he was a senior at the time). I remember talking to him and asking about wrestling and he told me a story of when where he was at a mental low point in his career. He had a close wrestling friend from SouthEast Polk High School (can't remember his name for the life of me) who went undefeated his freshman - junior year. During his friend's senior year, John told me that there was a controversial call made by the ref who was judging his friend's match. It ended up as a loss and was the only match his friend didn't win during his high school career. John told me that his friend not being there with him in their 4 time state champ/undefeated journey really messed with him mentally. But, John ended up going undefeated and became a legendary 4 time champion, so he was obviously able to power through it. Great video. I recognized SO much. Being an Iowan native myself. Especially Jordan Creek Mall. I'd recognize that place ANY day of the week. Lol

I wrestled as late as 2016 in Iowa. Young guys win state at 106-138. It is very impressive what Ben did at his weight
