Wonderful tutorial. Not ready to buy more colored pencils yet, but when I do, I will come back to this.
Thank you... thank you for watching. 🙏
Thank you so much! Over the years, I've usually just used graphite and charcoal for portraits, but recently started using color. I wasn't happy with the shadows, but didn't know what was wrong. I try to use complementary colors for my background, but never thought to use that for the shadows. I miss having an art teacher (also my best friend) for the last few years, we both have significant health issues. Being older than dirt is a challenge. I can't wait to try this, maybe I won't be so critical of my artwork. Again thank you, you've helped immensely and I enjoyed the video. You have a new follower.
Thank you so much for your kind words Patricia, thrilled you are enjoying my videos and finding them helpful. Sorry to help about you and your friends health issues... hope you find the strength to recover soon. Thanks for the follow... Wishing you blessings!! 🙏

I’ve always struggled with shadows and this video was the greatest help to me. Thank you so much for sharing 💗
You are very welcome Nicole... thank you so much for letting me know... means a lot. 😊🙏
Thank you Dave. That was such a valuable tutorial for me. I didn't think I would ever grasp shadows! You made it easy to follow and see where what colours were needed. I like your blending of colours, with the basics, also because the eyes were not included, it was easier to focus on the shadows, to see the facial structure, skin texture, the colouring, just so much easier to finally see the how, where and why. It looks so natural, so real, vibrant, healthy and living. I do so hope I can achieve that what you have shown. I am thouraghly enjoying the eased and relaxed atmosphere. Your expertise is greatly appreciated!Greetings, Lynda
You are welcome Lynda, Shadows are kind of magical, loads of subtle colours and energy in them. Thanks for watching and letting me know how the video made you feel... reassuring feedback for sure. Best wishes, Dave.😊🙏

I want to try drawing portraits with pencils. Could advise me a brand of pencil to start with. I just admire your beautiful work.
I would suggest starting with a box of 60 Stabilo CarbOtheo Chalk Pastel Pencils set... and a Faber Castell White pastel pencil. Thanks for liking my work 😊🙏
Thank you for the tutorial! It was very helpful. Beautiful work!
You are welcome Julianne... thank you & thanks for watching! 😊🙏
Beautiful work.......can you tell me if you ever use fixative. ......also. How do you store finished works. ❤❤❤
Thank you Linda, I tend not to fix the pastel as it dulls the colour, I store them wrapped in glassine paper, or frame them under glass with a mount to protect the works. 🙏🙏
It’s a wonderful demonstration! Thank you for your generosity 😊
Thank you... you are very welcome 🙏
Merci Dave pour vos tutoriels si riches ! quelle merveille de voir vos portraits prendre vie sous vos crayons pastel, on y apprend beaucoup de choses, c'est super !

@@DavePortersArt all of your videos are so helpful Dave as am just starting out on my pastel journey and you explain things so very clearly.
You're making drawing so easy, thank you for helpful tips 🙏
Thank you so much for taking the time to give such great feedback... much appreciated 😀
Dave, I like the techniques you use for the underpainting, and your explanations make it much more helpful. So the white, and the primary colors are used first, with green and yellow ochre. On the second stage, you move to more vibrant secondary/complementary colors(Caran D'Ache) in addition to the Stabilo and Conte's. It is quite a process you have here. Beyond this, you mention that drawing gradually becomes second nature like driving a car, and you learn to let your mind go and become more free flowing in the drawing... One problem I have not solved yet is what to do when the tooth of the Pastelmat is filled and now I want to change it without making mud.
Hi Brad... you summed up my technique very well. Regarding what you haven't worked out yet is I tend to dab a Faber Castell putty rubber over the area then change the colour to a grey by adding the complimentary colour and white to make mix a grey. Then any colour will go over this without creating mud. 🙏🙂
@@DavePortersArt Gosh. Thank you! I did not know about doing that. I am going to try that out. That is very helpful to me.
I love all your videos, they are very educational! and I love how subtle and relaxing that you do the turorial🥰❤️many thanks 🙏🏼

thank you for your presentation. Just thinking its better to use brushes for shading instead of fingers maybe. However beautyful portrait here.

You are welcome Rosália, I find the CarbOthellos and the Conté à Paris are really nice and chalky. Personally I would suggest buying the 60 box set of CarbOthello. All the very best 🙏
Thanks Dave, I’m amazed at how you paint so many different subjects with the same red, yellow, and blue basic colors. Please include a person of color who has a medium to darker complexion color. I’ve seen the painting of Will Smith which was an awesome study!! Ex. of darker skinned people….celebrities Idris Elba, Lupita Nyoung’o, Yomi Adegoke,,,,
Hi Victor... I have several videos on dark skin tones... please check out my channel. ☺🙏
I'm fallowing you on Petreon, you make such beautiful portraits, very dificult to me. Just want to know if you allways use grey pastelmat.
Hi Ana, thank you for supporting me on Patreon 😊The Grey pastelmat colour is somethings I tend to prefer, the flesh colour seems to stand out more on it. 🙏
Mines are white, makes me some dificult starting with white, so I'm using a kind of very light pink, so I go on until I bought some greys. Thanks for answer.
@@polacamedina you are welcome... using grey will help with judging values. 😊🙏

Thank you Dave for such wonderful video tutorials. I really enjoy and admire your art and your easy way of expressing yourself. I would like to know what size Claire Fontaine pastelmat paper you suggest for use in your patreon channel and how you get such clear bright copies for your reference photos. I have not had good luck with printing out my photos to use for reference. Thank you so much.
You are very welcome Joy... thank you so much for admiring my art... means a lot to me. I buy big sheets of the card version then cut them to size as I need them. I always copy from a computer screen for that reason. There is more advantages as you can blow the reference up for details and the colours are so much fresher. All the very best. Thank you for considering joining me on Patreon. 🙏🙂

Its sooo amazing. Thank you so much 💞 really crazy what colors you habe used and it looks so natural 🤩
Thank you so much 😊 appreciate the kind words 😊🙏
Hi Dave, I really enjoyed this, thanks for sharing. Question: if you were to use pencils without having to mix up the colours for the under painting and above. What colours would you use. Eg, I am working on brown paper for a portrait and I what ready colour pencils could I use for the shadows. Would greys and brown, red and nude shades be enough? Or do I still need the greens and blue? 🙂
Hi...thanks for watching my video... thrilled you enjoyed it. You are welcome. To answer your question. I haven't a shadow ready mixed pencil I use... I tend to mix red and green with a bit of brown if needed. My suggestion would be follow your own instinct and try the pencils you mentioned you could always add a light primary colours mix over the top to adjust the tint accordingly. All the very best Dave 💕🙏
beautifull teaches
Thank you so much 🙏
I believe the correct pronunciation for Caran D’Ache is caran dash. Just an FYI from a French speaker.
Thanks for the correction, for the past year or so I have been pronouncing right. Caran dash 🙏
Hi Dave Porter. I really love how you blend complimentary colours to make other colours. I've always wondered how to get the shadow colours without using blacks and browns. A quick question... what sharpener do you use with Carbothello and Pitt pastel pencils please? They always seem to break with my cheap sharpener.
Keep up the fab work 👍
Hi Paula... thanks for taking the time to leave a comment. Complementary colours do create subtle shadows for sure. I use a knife... if you check out my portrait for beginners I show you what I do. All the best 💕👊
What is the blending tool you use Dave?
Hi Sarah, Please check out the description under this video... I list all the blending tools I use. Thanks for watching 😊🙏

Hi Dave! I love all your tutorials! You are a great teacher! Can you please tell me how you sharper your pencils? I have tried all sorts of sharpener but find that they quickly start breaking the pencils. I end up resorting to using a utility knife to do it. I mostly use Carbethello and Pitt pastels.
IHi Louise, thank you so much for the wonderful feedback, I use a knife to sharpen my pencils check out this video where I show how I do it... ua-cam.com/video/Okz-XbSs5Ys/v-deo.html ...this is the time stamp... 05:18 🙏😊
