The Twist was the biggest song and dance crazed in (1960). It catapulted the song, and Chubby Checker into the stratosphere. I remember doing this dance as a 6 year old boy. What a time it was to be young in the 60's. Awesome. Great reaction as always.
Yes, yes we did...I was just a kid when this song came out and I would twist all the way down to the ground, and my parents would also get into the dance and twist as well!
This song started a whole dance craze when released in in 1960! Way before my time but I love it! Chubby Checker is still alive at 81! He was another black rock icon!❤❤
I had the chance to meet Chubby Checker a few years ago, and he invited several people from the audience to come up and do The Twist with him, and after the show, he actually spent the rest of the Evening signing autographs and meeting the fans, I have an autographed CD I bought that night
When he did the show, he told the audience that instead of waiting in the dressing room for the band to tear down the set, he would rather spend it with the fans, and he gave you a firm handshake
Because this dance was so easy to do - even I could do it, everyone did it. This was a huge hit followed by several other twist songs by Chubby and others. Every school dance played this and everyone twisted to it.
This song had a major impact on my life. My parents were born in the 40s but didn't meet until the 80s. Their first dance was to this song. They were married about a year later and I came along a year after that. I recently found a bunch of letters my mom wrote to her mother, and one of them was telling her all about this really nice man she'd met at a party and how she'd been sad she'd had to leave early. Meanwhile my dad was asking their hostess about the pretty woman he'd been dancing with.
Fun times! I love watching you two discover '50s-60s music! Tragically, three of the greats on their way up were tragically killed in a plane crash in 1959 about a mile from my grandparents' house. This has become known as "the day the music died".The venue where they last performed holds The Winter Dance Party every year, and it's still well attended by people from around the country and the world. I'm hoping you'll pay tribute to them: (1) Buddy Holly - Oh Boy (Ed Sullivan 1958) (2:03); Big Bopper - Chantilly Lace (1958) (2:28); (3) Ritchie Valens - La Bamba (Live) (2:49). Buddy Holly was a newlywed. The Big Bopper's name was J. P. Richardson. Ritchie Valens was only 17 years old. So sad.
In '74, high schools, junior high school had dances at night at school and we learned how to dance the twist, the locomotion and slow dancing. It's a shame they don't have "teen clubs" anymore.
In the time period, it was popular to create a new dance as the basis of a song. Many succeeded, and the twist was a very popular one. Seek other songs of the period and see what I spoke of. It was my moms teenage experience, along with poodle skirts, patent leather shoes, Bobby socks, bufont hair, and civics classes, which was the beginning of socialistic mass public programming, and only continued to the point we are now. Just the truth, unfortunately.
You need to react to Carole King being honored at the Kennedy Center Aretha Franklin showed up to honor Carol it was her last live performance before she passed Carole King wrote Natural Woman and let Aretha record it first
You are so right about this being a dance craze. When I was about 7-8 yrs old, there was a movie named Twist Around The Clock, and everybody spilled out into the aisles and danced up a storm. Easiest dance in the world to do, and fun. Too bad they don't show Chubby Checker in this video, but it should be easy to find footage of him.
Love Chubby. He sent his daughter to a school where my mother taught. Sacred Heart Academy in Bryn Mawr (Welsh). I had my guard down once, he drove by and saw my pain I did not mean to be seen. He looked Gorgeous and Humble in his Maroon Jaguar. He had compassion for my pain. You could see the humanity in his eyes. I was ashamed. I had done no wrong. I will always love Chubby.
The Twist was the first popular dance that didn’t require dance partners to be touching like the jitterbug. I’ve seen Chubby Checker perform live twice. He was a great entertainer and had people dancing in the isles and on the tables!
As Rock and Roll evolved so did dance. Several songs were written just for certain dances like the stoll, the stomp and the hustle and jitterbug. Great time to be alive...sadly I was born too late.
It is so much fun watching your reactions to early popular music! I'm a teacher and this is one of the songs my Pre-Kindergarten children love to sing and dance to multiple times each week.
Everybody WAS doing the Twist! We were little kids in Kindergarten and doing the Twist in the driveway when the neighbors older sister turned her radio up for this song. Then there was 'let's twist again, like we did last summer'.
You guys need to react to the cover of this song by the rap group The Fat Boys from the 80’s! It features Chubby Checker and they’re all having a great time 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Imagine building an entire career on the basis of 1 song? They often joked about how he went from a production line in a factory to being asked to sit in on what was supposed to be a demo ~ the song became an international hit ~ & even in his later years he was still performing 20 shows a month minimum making $5K+ a show still twisting
An interview with Chubby Checker he said he did the song, then when he walked in an auditorium, the crowd was doing the dance, he learned it from the audience!!
"We need to teach those people how to move the bottom against the top of their body so they'll THINK they're dancing!" 🤣 - Unknown Blues artist Years later, the Twist became...the Carlton. 🤓
Mel girl- You can do it! You mentioned on another recent video doing the dance. Please let us see it- seriously, I have no doubts in you gorgeous-❤️✌️👍
Hey guys the song you were just listening to the twist came out in 1960 by the creator of that dance Chubby Checker it became a worldwide hit a brand new dance and to this day everybody still does the twist
The inspiration for the name, Chubby Checker, was Fats Domino. In 1986, I saw a great Rock + Roll Oldies show, with close to a dozen acts from the 50s and 60s. Chuck Berry was the headliner, but Chubby stole the show!
You are sooooo right that everybody must have been doing the twist. We were aaaall dancing it from kids age 3 to my grandma. At weddings..we all danced with each other in groups of 2 or more. It was a blast! One day I was crying cuz my cousin hit me & my grandfather who was quiet, grabbed myrtle hand...put on the 45 record. & he danced with me til I was all giggles
"Chubby Checker" was a witty stage name for a young Black singer who wanted to capitalize on the name and spirit of the legendary Black pop singer Fats Domino.
Chubby Checker is still performing at 80!! And he still sounds the same, and looks GREAT ! You wouldn't believe he is 80. Some fun facts, he and his wife got married in 1964 and still married to her for 57 years!! former Miss World 1962, Catherine Johanna- they are so cute! I would like to read a book about their opinions on such a successful marriage ♡
One of those movies was Matthew Broderick in "Ferris Beullers Day Off." There is also a song called the "Peppermint twist." As a teen these were played at parties and that was the 80's.
One of the best ways to trim up your waist! I actually won a twist contest at a high school dance during the late 70s. It was a 50s themed dance party. So much fun! Great reaction, guys. :)
The Mashed Potato was also a great dance. Little Eva was the original singer of the dance. Between the Mashed Potato and the Twist people didn't have the weight problems that they have today. More places to go to dances or parties. It was fun!
This dance was so popular that this is the ONLY song that hit #1 twice-first in 1960 when kids were doing the dance-then it hit #1 in 1961 when the older population started doing the dance as well. chubby made a career doing dance records. I bet after you did this video, you were twistin. Next up you need to do either Let's Twist Again or Pony time.
Benefits of having a very large extended family...my older cousins taught the younger ones to do them all, mashed potato, pony, stroll, jerk, swim but my favorite was the twist!
Near the beginning there was 2people on dance floor by themselves him in suit her dark hair white shirt black trousers.that was John travolta and Uma Thurman from pulp fiction.near the end the guy with the animal print tank top on the float was Matthew Broderick from Ferris bullers day off the song they used for that was twist and shout by the Beatles.
The two of you are both correct, papa mama grandma grandpa with the children 😂 Some of the video clips were from black and white music TV shows. Chubby Checker was the black man at the beginning 😊
I was a little girl when this first came out…and I could twist with the best of them….but that was 61 years ago….now I’d throw a hip out if I tried it…lol!
My dad taught me "the twist" when I was kid in the 80s. Mel is correct, btw -- the video here is a montage of various videos, movies, etc where "the twist" made appearances. The dance is still renowned to this day.
Shawn and Mel that's the best exercise song out there. I danced the Twist many a time back when I was young. You need to react to the Peppermint Twist by Joey Dee and the Starlighters. It is connected to the Peppermint Lounge in NYC back in the late 50's, early 60's.
You should redo this by finding a video with Chubby Checker himself doing this song. They do have his videos on here of him doing the twist and singing.
.........another hit song and dance by Chubby Checker was "the Pony" you gotta see that video showing 2 couples teaching "the Pony".........It's Pony Time C'mon
you should find a video of Chubby Checker performing when you check out the sequal "Let's Twist Again (like we did last summer)"
The Twist was the biggest song and dance crazed in (1960). It catapulted the song, and Chubby Checker into the stratosphere. I remember doing this dance as a 6 year old boy. What a time it was to be young in the 60's. Awesome.
Great reaction as always.
So much so he made twist again
I was about 5 or 6. Everyone in Australia did the twist. It was so much fun. If you could swivel your feet you could twist.
Chubby came back with a new song "Let's Twist Again" like we did last summer! Another Great!
Yesss!
@@kimberlinibambini1988 ALSO THE FLY

I remember when "The Twist" exploded on the scene, it was huge, everybody was doing "The Twist"....
THIS WAS THE TIME WHEN MEN AND WOMEN STARTED TO DANCE ON THEIR OWN AS BEFORE IT WAS ALL WALTZ AND QUICKSTEP ETC
I learned to do the Twist when I was 6 year's old and I can still do it😂Chubby Checker is a black man.
Every single wedding reception I've ever been to, this has been played and it is a fun song to dance to for sure!
Can't emphasize how revolutionary this song & dance was on society in 1960....this song became #1 in 1960 & again in 1962
Yes, yes we did...I was just a kid when this song came out and I would twist all the way down to the ground, and my parents would also get into the dance and twist as well!
My parents had this album when I was growing up. We wore that thing out, twisting all over the house. Good times.
This song started a whole dance craze when released in in 1960! Way before my time but I love it! Chubby Checker is still alive at 81! He was another black rock icon!❤❤

I worked one night in 1996 operating the spotlight for Chubby Checker. He was actually a great performer. He had young kids up and Twisting.
The Twist is the only record to hit #1 rwo different years. 1960 & 1962.The biggest dance craze EVER.
You need to watch the video of chubby checker preforming the song and twisting
Exactly! Their missing out, and so are we.

Probably the biggest dance to come out of modern music.
When I was young I’d twist to the floor and back up, now I just fall to the floor and can’t get back up.😂 Love this song. Love y’all and keep safe

You didn't need to go to the gym back in the day.💃🕺. I stayed in good shape cause I danced all the time.💞💞
So right everyone could do the twist. Weddings OMG still fun ! What an era… born in 50 it always make me smile

I could give a thumbs up for every comment...thats how it happened then...it was so cool back then
You can’t imagine how big this was. It took the country by storm. The older people were watching tv to learn how to twist. So so big.
A bit surprised it took so long for you two to find Chubby Checker. He was big for a few years...very upbeat.
Mel, you are correct stating that there were quite a few movie clips in this one! Good eye! The Twist is a great one...

I like the video of Chubby Checker doing the twist.
Oh yes people are still doing the twist! Check out Chubby Checker The Twister I think you'll like that one too and find video of him doing the song.
Great dance songs and good exercise! 😁
A basic dance. But so fun!!!❤❤❤🤭🤭🤭🔥🔥🔥
Church preachers called it the devil's music. All rock & roll was a parents nightmare. They did not want their kids listening to it.
I love his song. It's not his original video for the song though. I love this version too. Thank you for playing it 🎶🎶

Yes. People are certainly still doing the twist.
Great voice! White kids started dancing with black kids, the walls were coming down.
3 years old my momma let me play her 45 records, and the twist was my favorite ❤️
