Wish they would do some sd40's and sd45's. Would love to see what they could do on one. They could be very nice, if they would do it. And wonder why they don't, only lesser sd's.
I'm sold on the Atlas locomotives being able to crawl at a prototypical speed for realistic coupling of cars, instead of just ramming into a car causing the whole line of cars to move. Great video, very well executed in detail of subject 👍
Nice review. Once "broken-in" properly, Atlas models are simply the best running locomotives on the market. Most of mine are Atlas and they all run superbly. I can make mine crawl eight feet per half-hour easy with the appropriate decoder. Cheers ~ Boomer.
This is a wonderful looking ge u23b model, i really like the early 1960s/ 1970s 4 axle model ge diesels & i am really interested in either the Santa Fe or D&H version of this u23b model.
Cool Model John. That is a good bell location on the MP U23's ive seen before, not sure if its correct for all of them. I did find this info while looking around. " - was built in 1974 by General Electric. It was later renumbered to MP 4513, and then into the UP number series as UP 547. It was retired in January 1991 "
ESU vs. Soundtraxx is one of those "holy war" topics that should be covered on its own program. At the end of the day, you have to use what you like the best, and for each person, that will vary depending on what his/her goals are. It would be easy to buy a U23B model that's "DCC ready" and install whatever decoder you want in it. That's probably the best option for goaliegeorge. Knowing him, he'd probably also add a bunch of additional lights to it!
The painted grills and MU hoses are a nice upgrade. I love the MoPac scheme, but the white circle is slightly offset too high against the red buzz saw. It's not centered properly. At this price point, it's a great-running loco, but the details and features aren't nearly as good as some other manufacturers. For instance, the trucks are not painted so they look like plastic. I may have missed it, but could you please mention the DCC decoder manufacturer, the decoder version, and what options can be changed (i.e. 5 horn types, 2 bell types, etc.). Thanks!
Sure is a good looking model. But man that horn... Wonder if it's just that specific horn's sound. I've got a U28C with LokSound and it sounds GREAT. I've got an Atlas Gold GP40 also with LokSound and it also sounds fantastic. But the horns on those prototypes are probably way different. the U-Boat is BN and the GP40 is KCS.
@@tsgmultimedia The window placement is drastically off. The engineers window is too narrow and should be centered with the side windows; on the model it is much lower. The middle windows should sit higher than the side widows. The roof contour is too shallow as well - it should end below the numberboards. What the shallow roof profile does is locate the side windows too high, causing some of the problems mentioned above and places them too high relative to the handrail. Hopefully Atlas' revised cab will correct these flaws.
@Zach Larson I guess I didn't notice so much when I looked at the prototype shots. It looks pretty good to me. Admittedly, though, I'm also not a MoPac foamer. 😀
When he said "it sounds good" at the end, I thought the same as you. That God-awful horn... The bell sounds like someone tapping on a wine glass with a spoon. The prime-mover sounds like a popcorn machine.
That is a nice model. Atlas has great locos lately, and it is good to see.

That Mopac Scheme! Beautiful! It’s cool to see midwestern equipment like the CNW caboose and now MP!
I have the D&H paint scheme of this locomotive, superb detail.
That's some really nice crawling! Overall looks great, nice job showing off the dark colored scheme
I'm glad you did this, I just bought 2. D&H. But I hurt my back and haven't run them yet! Keep up these great videos!
I recommend getting the scale sound sepaker. Prime mover sounds more realistic with a scale sound speaker.

Absolutey right,Boomer. The right decoder makes all the difference!

I might have to look to see if there's a WP version. I have two in N and they're very nice.
Good news is they can be easily upgraded to Tsunami2 using the 21Pin socket! 😉👍🏻
But why would you do that when ESU is superior 😝

Great review john,Always loved atlas's products BTW I hope you fixed that "Godzilla" sounding horn...LOL
If that's what ESU LokSound V5 sounds like. I'm swearing allegiance to Soundtraxx.
I didn't!

Esu is the decoder in this locomotive. You can see the paper work for it at the beginning of the video
What rail company is that with?
I do not understand your question.
@@tsgmultimedia what railroad does that locomotive belong to? I've seen the livery before but for the life of me I can never remember it
"Mo Pac" is short for Missouri Pacific.

Close your eyes and it sounds like a bcrail c40
Any glance at a prototype photo will show that the cab is completely inexcusable on these.
What are you complaining about specifically?

this review was for sure payed for by atlas lol

No one paid! The sounds of loco are really good, as in the clarity and volume. I wasn't commenting about whether the horn is to my liking :))
I recommend getting the scale sound sepaker. Prime mover sounds more realistic with a scale sound speaker then stock speaker.
