After finishing wheat harvest we have four truck loads to take to the elevator as they won't fit in the grain bag. Then HEMP HARVEST BEGINS. Stopping to make sure everything is okay, we find some hot hemp fiber wrapped around the back of the rotor, which could cause fire issues. Then time to clean the hemp seed.

Randall Harmsen I believe the Hemp Fiber is use for making Rope. I know it was one of the cash crops for the early Virginia Colonist. The British navy need a lot of Rope.
Christopher O'Meara yes this is true. My grandpa grew it during WW2 for rope. There are many more uses for the fiber.
Hemp fiber can be used in making cloth and paper also.
I had a bush jacket of hemp fabric, soft and durable. Got 10 years wear out of it, a denim jacket will give you maybe 5, YMMV. If I could find another, I would buy it in a heartbeat.

@@christopheromeara986 when the japanese took manila during WW2 the US Gov encouraged "Partiotic Farmers" to grow Hemp for the war effort (See "Hemp For Victory") there are over 400 products that can be made from the hemp plant, including Food Fuel and fiber

It works! And there's no high. Why mock it? I would rather be dead but in God's creation I'm still alive and the whole reason for the world is to care for the weakest other wise there would be no world like back in the beginning! Fyi those seeds get sold to China then made into the oil i use most likely.

But it can also be used as a noun with the definition: "a distinct compound or substance, especially one which has been artificially prepared or purified". That is the more common definition.

I can't believe it harvested that easy for you guys. That's great. Guys down here in SC Colorado has billy hell last year combining it. Almost every field they had 2 combines in it. But one would be getting worked on and the other cutting.
Nobody hardly planted it this year. To much trouble. Glad it is working out for you guys.
seems like a catch 22. Hemp needs some equipment specialization but there is not enough of a market at present to justify the investment which in turn is holding back the profitability of the harvest and limiting the market....or something like that

Praise God, I have been watching your AG channel recently rather than Millennial Farmer because of your Profession of Faith in Christ Jesus our Lord and Savior. The detail and patience you afford your viewers is great. There is a peace of of the Holy Spirit that captures the essence of your presentation. Ii have known Christ as my savior now forty years, I am 69 and come from an aerospace and military aircraft background and an Army Veteran. Currently living in Wyola Montana, so as to use the Sheridan VA. I used to drive the DAV for vets and had some stops many years ago in Glasgow. back in 2010 has grown considerably since than. I also remember and Abaddon Air Base as well. Now used and owned Boeing Military as a test base. The v-22 Tilt Rotor aircraft. I worked that test program back in 1989- 1991 at Willington Flight Test Center, Willington Delaware as a test engineer data systems aircraft 4 and 5. Small world. With everything going on and uncertainly I have been praying about moving up and around Glasgow. Closer to the Canadian boarder. Actually I had an interview at the J Deere dealership in Sheridan with Rob Moody. I contacted Tim Shultz in sales C&B Billings, He gave me Adam Sommers in HR and the regional sales Rep Jeff Fjelftdi. Being Christmas I have yet to contact them. Perhaps I should focus on Case instead of JD. Any way I enjoy your videos however I was disappointed in your growing Hemp... Hemp has been given a bad rap by the media and those who wish to control it for the profit of big pharma. Like big oil. Like big sugar when the outlawed stevia plants in the states.
I think we all missed an opportunity for some jokes around the possibility of a fire in a hemp field. Headline; “Hippies from miles around flocked to the Fast farm as the smell of burning hemp, marijuana flooded the area” 😂 (not wishing to make light of a burning crop / combine obviously)

Hemp and it's sister products are so under used and undervalued. That you are using the whole plant with very little waste making a product that can be used in virtually anything is indeed a gift from God. It is good to see restrictions on it as well as medical being relaxed. It even passed here in Missouri. If I was 20 years younger, in better shape and better land I would be looking into it. Everyone I have talked to that is in it says it's becoming the booming industry it should always have been and the sky is the limit. I hope they are right and wish everyone fighting for it and working in it the best of luck. And I still have to give a grunt every time I hit the breakers and the machines fire up. I am a fan of The Cornstars which is probably how you showed up and now you have a new subscriber.

After watching you pull that hemp fiber off of the rotor, I can see why it is sought after for ropes and clothing. Looks like pretty tough stuff.

Riding in combine is fun for someone who never has been in one But running one you have a lot of stuff you need to watch and keep a eye on so you don’t clog up and break something
I worked for a hemp farm last year in mid Michigan ,the way we did it was way different,our plants were at least 6 feet tall,we had to hand pick em and then throw them into a woodchopper which shot it into a dump trailer.we would then go unload it at a facility,where we then run it through a tumbler to get the seeds then we would take the rest of the shopped up hemp and put into small gallon bags.
Hey Tony, you’re right the metal needs to be clean for 7018. I know there are thousands of welders out there better than myself but I use 6011 or 6013 for field repairs. I’m sure there would be some disagreement but my welds hold and get the job done. Just one farmer with my fair share of burns and breakdowns. Farmer Ken
Thanks Tony for making this a separate video. 👍 Very interesting to see the commercial cycle of plant, growing and harvest Hemp. Did not realize the amount of cleaning required by the farmer prior to shipping to plant. Was the fibre left on field cut to a certain length in combine or will the baler be further crimping the fibre? Is there a different price for fibre and seed or just paid by acre? Did you lose any amount of seed at the back end of the combine? Will you require to spend more time removing any oily residue from the combine prior to winter storage? Still have more questions but that is for another time. Happy you made a profit at this experimental stage. 🍁😎

Great job understanding how to adjust each piece of equipment to make a product that your consumer wants. Mechanical engineering students would do well working for you, I think they could learn a lot.
Glad it worked well for you and you didn’t need any added equipment. Here in Vermont people were spending hundreds of thousands of dollars and it turned to be a wash.
Matt LeVitre A friend raised a few acres last year but didn’t this year. For the amount of labor and his investment the return just wasn’t there... It would be interesting to study up on the Montana regulations for raising hemp. In Kansas, the state required a high fence enclosure, background checks of anyone working within the area, and visited the site several times to test that the crop wasn’t producing THC. He was trying to market seedless buds for CBD extract and had to hand process everything...

There are way less issues with wrapping and fire if you harvest when the stems are still green. the wind can shell out a lot too if you let it get too dry.
Yes is 2018 we did harvest it greener. The verity is great for shatter.
That's the right way to start a video!
Make sure that you check also the outside of the combine for fire. I combined first 2 quarters of our own hemp out of the swath, never any signs of fire. Then I moved to the neighbors field and straight cut his hemp. All of a sudden I smelt fire , and yes on 6 different spots the hemp dust started by spontaneous combustion, on the fuel tank, but also on a metal strip on the outside of the combine , no muffler or bearing started that. We got it out and no damage, this was on a Case 7120. lots of people blow the machine clean every couple of hour with a leaf blower.
Lots of combines around here had trouble with that in their lentils.

Make sure the joints are perfectly aligned i would suspect when you re welded they are not in line. If the shafts are running at decent offset it will make the problem worse.

I suppose the only reason not too is the immense amount of material the thresher would have to process... gotta do what ya gotta do

There must be one. When I lived in AB in the late 90's there were hemp fields in the Camrose area. The farmer wasn't growing it just to mess with hippies (although he did have signs saying it won't get you high).

I was wondering the same thing, with all the weeds in the hemp too, maybe also contributed to the really dark color of the plants at harvest. Edit: I have family in Melbourne Mauldon’s I’m from the US though.
They don’t want us to spray the crop.

The hemp is a rough character. Are the OEMs looking at ways to add sensors and fire suppression system to the combines? I am sure that a high capacity firetruck would still be needed outside the equipment but thus might give the operator a few critical minutes before it got out if control.

The yokes on the driveshaft need to be timed together for balance.. the vibration combined with the tiniest flaw will cause cracks in the heat affected zone right beside the weld.. we use a bubble level on the yoke end and match the other end to it...

It seems like it would make sense to stock an extra header driveshaft so you can weld the broken one back in the shop when not combining so as to minimize down time.
It’s a warranty issue. We will see what comes of that.
Well,yeah, hemp was real cash crop here in north central Tennessee a century ago for rope and twine.

I have seen videos of hemp harvesting in Europe using double cut combines. Maybe it is to prevent the rotor from getting wrapped in the straw?
Those crops are a true dual crop variety I am guessing. The fiber is a lot taller. Cool machines.

It is was a Deere they'd have to take it to a service center to get it unclogged. And they'd say, we can't fix this and it's not covered by warranty so you'll have to buy a brand new machine.

I'm a hemp farmer in north carolina. My question is, is hemp like this really sticky and gummy as it comes off ?
Actually I just had a good idea for you to combat the wrapping issue. Get a hook knife like a saddle maker uses to cut leather. There shaped similar to an eagles beak. But they work great for that type of issue.
I can’t reach that far up with a knife. I was just grabbing the ends and they unrolled.
We grow cbd hemp and our plants look completely different. Is that a different phylum of hemp ? Our stalks are 4 to 5 inches diameter. No way to combine.
