Great Lesson for my students on Gottschalk, as we will also sing "Camptown Races", and the story behind that song. My seventeen old son was just showing me a piece from the televison show "South Park". I then told him about Gottschalk's "Banjo Piece", then we found you. Thank you, sir.
Oh dear. You play him so well. Gottschalk is my favorite I just can't quite get my hands around him. The Banjo made me come alive when I was around 16. I got it enough back in the day, but you playing his repertoire off music is frankly wonderful
All of the 'Union' tunes mentioned in the narrative belonged to both those both north and south. All are pre-1861 selections and what became our National anthem was written out in the harbor at my hometown of Baltimore during the attempted British amphibious invasion of early September, 1814.
I met you today and I'm in love with your playing. I just love my national hymn version by Gottschalk! The grand final fantasy of Hino Nacional do Brazil!
Thank you Adelaide. I just listened to Gottschalk's Grand Triumphal Fantasy on the Brazilian National Anthem. I can see why you love it. Very triumphant, and I love the cadenzas and grace notes. Thanks for watching.
Gottschalk was America's first "pop music" superstar...literally an American Franz Liszt...a flamboyant virtuoso popular with the ladies - around the world - prolly the 19th century equivalent of Mick Jagger...
Thank you. You might enjoy Gottschalk's The Union. ua-cam.com/video/AJTHrBzwrP8/v-deo.html He tosses everything into that piece, and it's a lot of fun.
Best one yet! One thing I really enjoy about youtube (as opposed to iTunes, Spotify etc)is seeing the performer. I also like it when the score is included so I can follow along. Is there a way to have both? I liked it when you had Geoffrey Block as your guest and you had an interview. I hope you get a lot more views and likes as I haven’t seen a combination of commentary and performance this good. It seems it’s one or the other.
Hi Duane, I certainly appreciate your wonderful playing and super insight. I'm curious as to what piano that you are playing. It sounds great! Thank you so much!
Utterly captivating - superb playing and loved your explanations and insight! I've played for years and this music is new to me - I feel I'm missing out 😀. Do you have recommendations for playing score editions available? You did your countrymen proud with this vid, subscribed
Thanks C M. I prefer the Dover edition of Collected Works of Gottschalk. It's comprehensive and economical. You can find some of his works on IMSLP.org. It's fun music!
@@LearnLoveMusic thanks so much for quick reply - value your thoughts on this. Will remember to check IMSLP in the meantime. You really made Gottschalk come alive and whetted my appetite to explore this whole area. When you described the attitude of the Paris Conservatoire, and contrasted that to the amazing textures and emulation the rea.ly rich folk scene, I paused and wondered where that kind of attitude could be in myself and limiting me - inherited in similar way? So good job all round 😀👍

Thank you so much!
Thanks, Ronald. I have two pianos, both Steinways. The one I play on most of the time is a Steinway 1978 Model B (6'10"). Hope you keep watching!
