Oriental Magpie Robin | Mannathi Pullu | മണ്ണാത്തിപ്പുള്ള് | Copsychus saularis | Birds | Malayalam

Today we are going to familiarize the passerine bird Oriental Magpie Robin. In ‘Malayalam’ vernacular, the bird is called as “ Mannathi pullu”. Scientific name of the bird is Copsychus saularis.
Of the seven subspecies recognized, Copsychus saularis saularis occurs in Kerala. It is a resident bird.
Oriental magpie robin is a resident breeder in tropical southern Asia, including India, Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Eastern Pakistan, Myanmar, Eastern Indonesia, Thailand, Singapore, Southern China and Malaysia.
The bird occurs in dry deciduous forests, teak forests, river banks through forests, forest edge along logging tracks, bamboo forests, village groves, gardens, parks and urban areas. Oriental magpie-robin, a forest bird is found in open woodland, cultivated areas, and in house compounds.
Bird, almost like bulbul is about 19-21 cm long and 29-51 g weight. Male bird is glossy bluish black above and on breast. White bands are along wings, and white sides of long graduated tail. Belly to vent and under tail coverts are whitish. Bill and legs are black. Female bird is almost like male but replaced with grey, except on wings. Juvenile birds are dark brownish grey with blackish mottling above and whitish bands on wings, and rufous wing edges, mottled dark buff on face and breast and flanks.
Bird feeds mostly on ground, hopping about in upright position along branches or in leaf litter on the floor, with long tail pumping over back and wings partly drooped.
Diet includes mainly insects, including beetles, crickets, firebugs, grasshoppers, caterpillars, dragonflies, wasps, termites, spiders, leeches, household waste, etc. Also enjoys nectar of Erythrina and Salmalia flowers.
The bird takes mud bath during rainy period.
Male bird sing loudly from the top of trees or from other high perches during the breeding season. Female bird may sing briefly in the presence of a male. Apart from their song, the bird use a range of calls including territorial calls, emergence and roosting calls, threat calls, submissive calls, begging calls and distress calls. The typical mobbing calls is a harsh hissing kreshh. The bird can also mimic the calls of drongo, treepie, bablers, etc.
Breeding period is from March to July. The bird nest in tree hollows or in small crevices in walls or building. The nest is lined with grass. Usually, female bird is involved in nest building and complete within a week before the eggs are laid. Four oval eggs of pale bluish green with brownish speckles are laid. Female bird incubate the eggs for 8 to 14 days. Nestlings are fed with small caterpillars. Females take care of feeding the young ones.
Males are quite aggressive in the breeding season and usually defend their territory and nests.
Conservation status is “Least Concern”, but in some areas the population is declining.
