thank you thank you...really enjoyed this presentation...I remember my dad pulling over on 176 to listen to the engines working up the grade...I loved the old us 176 road from landrum to Hendersonville...especially between tryon and the old green river bridge

I met Bob once at a train show in Richmond,Va. What a treasure trove of stories and information but bottom line he's a real gentleman.

As a locomotive driver here in Australia here is the reason the coupler force increases as train speed decreases due to a grade.
Diesel electric locomotives produce their most pulling power from a standing start. This is due to the physics of operation of the electric traction motors, who’s current draw in Amps is highest at 0 rpm and lowest at their maximum rpm where current draw into the armature is restricted by what’s known as induced voltage due to electro magnetic induction, this voltage opposes the driving voltage coming from the locomotives alternator. It occurs due to the fact that a motor and generator are actually very similar in construction. Consequently a motor in rotation actually generates a voltage which opposes its own driving voltage. This voltage increases as rpm (track speed) increases in turn this reduces the amount of amperage draw through the motor and since amperage is directly related to the traction motors turning force or torque it stands to reason that torque reduces as rpm increases, this is obviously translated as actual track speed. Hope this makes sense.

Met Bob via the telephone. And had a great conversation with him at the time. I had acquired a DVD of Saluda grade and the 611. I wanted to know if he had more DVDs available. Turns out he does and there are some excellent railroad subject titles that he offers. I have several. There are 4 on Saluda Grade alone. 3 are about different 611 trips on the grade. The other is about the history of the town, the railroad and the grade itself. This last one entitled "Saluda Grade" has several interviews from the town folks and railroad personnel who have worked on the grade. They are all very good, as well as his other titles of area railroading such as the old Clinchfield line. Bob is great as he helps to preserve a part of Railroad Heritage and History!!!!

Does he have a website? I'd be interested in getting DVD's from him. I had the videos on Saluda on VHS but they are long gone.

That was really cool to listen to. I'm from Windsor,Ontario,Canada & film CN Engines going through the Windsor/Detroit tunnel which goes underneath the Windsor/Detroit river, it's pretty neat seeing them come out of the tunnel. I also film CN & CP Engines up in London,Ontario which they fly through some of those intersections with 6-7 Engines & winter time i film all around Southern Ontario CN Snow Plows.

Nice presentation, Bob! I have a friend, who in 2018 is only 21, is an up & coming rail historian in eastern PA and western NJ. What I'm wondering is, if NS is amenable, would it be feasible to run excursion trains pulled by a geared steam locomotive like a Shay, Climax or Heisler? Thanks, Bill

Great story. I've hand poured sand in front of my track machine to get it up an icy bank.
