// ABOUT ME
Hi friends! My name is Jananie (pronounced JEN-NA-NEE) and I'm a 22 year old Canadian book lover and storyteller.

Skyline by ikson ( / ikson )
Love the video, but just so you know, Sally Rooney is Irish, not Canadian!
Wow totally got that wrong, thanks for the heads up!
Haha yeah we read Normal People in my Irish Fiction class :P
I was literally about to comment that 😂💕 honestly hated normal people but hopefully you'll like it
whenever I watch book haul videos and think to myself:
"Huh,I really should get these books!" I swear I can hear my TBR SOBBING in the backround 🤣❤☺👌😆❤
Lol same
girl can talk so fast yet her dictation and pronunciation is like top notch
Good Omens is awesome, the ineffable husbands are super cute and also you do get extra bits that aren’t in the show which is lovely. I think you’ll really enjoy it!
Your shirt matches The Henna Wars!
Hahahaha "I am an uncultured SWINE and have never read Toni Morrison" 😄 Love that. Also love through this whole video you trying to expand your horizons and read more genres, diverse authors, etc. One of the reasons I follow you with my whole soul 🥰
i'm pretty impressed about how fast you talk and still your diction is so good i can understand everything without subtitles!!!! (i'm brazilian)
I would recommend Indian Horse by Richard Wagamese. It starts in the 1960s I believe and follows a young Indigenous boy throughout his life as he gets caught and sent to residential school and the lasting effects that has. I'm about halfway through right now and it's amazing
This is literally the second video I watch of your channel and I already added smt like eight books to my tbr... I’m loving you so much
Good Omens is one of my favorite books! I was afraid the TV show wouldn't do it justice, but they did a very good job of adapting it. I don't know that I would say the book is slower but it is more nuanced perhaps? And I really enjoyed So You Want to Talk About Race - very helpful. I just finished Clap When You Land - what a wonderful book.
Talk about book buying problems...I’ve bought almost 300 books in the past 3 months alone 🙈🙈🙈🙈 .................. In regards To Normal People, I struggled a bit figuring out my thoughts when I was filming my May wrap up which included Normal People, but overall I loved it! It was a little frustrating at some parts (which I believe is intentional, goes with the story) but otherwise great. I binged the series the night after reading the book which I recommend you do! The representation of anxiety, I believe, was done very well both in the book as well as the show. On another note, I’m Saudi, so Henna Wars sounds interesting to me too!! Sounds like it would be a light and fun read (I hope).
You described all of the books so well that my TBR list is crying. You're an awesome booktuber
I love Toni Morrison. My absolute favourite is Song of Solomon - I read it over a decade ago and still think about it. ❤️📚
Me too. Since this quarantine, I bought so many books and I can't stop :(
I love American Gods and Neverwhere! I hope you enjoy them. I also agree the Good Omens is slower than the show (and there's more time spent with side characters in the middle of the book when really I wanted more Crowley and Aziraphale) but I still enjoyed it overall! I read it years ago and then re-read last year before the the show premiered.
My favorite Toni Morrison book is Song of Solomon! It's just so good!! Also, I would recommend The Inconvenient Indian by Thomas King as a book by an indigenous author -- it was one of my favorite books of last year :-))
Beloved is my favorite Toni Morrison but I just finished A Mercy a few weeks ago and it is ASTONISHING!!
Loving your channel! You have always been one of my favorite Booktubers! You inspired me to join the booktube community and I just started my channel 3 weeks ago and LOVING IT! Can't wait to continue to watch more of your content.
I just finished reading So You Want to Talk About Race and it was so incredible!!!
Omg I just watched Good Omens as well, I absolutely loved it!! I have the book as well, I just need to get around to actually reading it haha
quarantine has allowed me to surpass my 50 book yearly goal so im now sitting on 91 total with no signs of slowing down. most books ive ever read in a year
I just read Take a Hint, Dani Brown. I loved it! I also just got The Tiger at Midnight, and this just bumped it up on my TBR.
Black girl unlimited looks cool!! Nice book haul! Neverwhere was such a good read! I have good omens in my tbr.
The Palace of Illusions has gone in to my next haul wish list! Never heard of it and it sounds so amazing. Would love a female perspective on male-heavy legends x
i recommend 9 perfect strangers. it’s about these people who want to go “better” them selves and they go to this huge house as a cleanse for no alcohol, coffee, sugar, sugar or junk food. each chapter tells a different point of view. i’m half way through and i highly recommend so far
Omg please keep us updated on how you like The Palace of Illusions!! It seems amazing
Oh also, Palace of Illusions is really brilliant.
i really love how eloquent and well-spoken you are :)) btw, ur so pretty and amazing, girl!
I read Tiger at Midnight because I saw how much you loved it and I was so engrossed it wasn't even funny. I ended up checking it out from the library so I was sad I couldn't annotate, but I basically couldn't put the book down! I finished it in less than 24 hours and It's probably one of the best books I've read this year!! Thanks for talking about it on your channel, I'm so happy I read it!!
YES. I'm so happy you enjoyed it!! That's amazing to hear 😊❤️
I always love your videos!! You give such great recommendations and your synopses are always on point!
I read Normal People a few months ago and absolutely ADORED it!! It is now one of my favourite books. I have to say though that I read it at the perfect time for me, so I really hope it'll work for you, too!!
we love huge book hauls😍😍
The Marrow Thieves and Riot Baby sound so intriguing! Also, yeees Take a Hint, Dani Brown 😍 The cover for Grown!! 🤩 My Lady Jane was so funny! It was a little weird but it was so funny. I read it on audiobook and the narrator adds to the humor.
I Am Not a Number, When We Were Alone and This Place are all books by Indigenous authors. I haven’t read them yet but I have heard good things. Red Wolf and Hawk are two books not written by an Indigenous author but have Indigenous main characters and I enjoyed both books quite a bit.
Omg I'm glad that Palace of Illusions in now on your TBR! It's a wonderful book :)
I still haven’t read hey a life or take a hint 😭😭 I’m so behind. I finished a song of wraith and ruin and I loved it! I can’t wait to see how the story unfolds. It was a solid first book! I can’t wait to see your opinions of black girl unlimited! I cried so hard
Finished take a hint last night and it was so good 😭😍 and yas I'm so glad you liked song of wraiths. And ahh I'll be a wreck then reading black girl unlimited, I cry so easily 😂
‘So You Want to Talk about Race’ is a great book and the author is amazing! It’s definitely a great place to start with learning about privilege.
omg can I just say your makeup is always IMPECCABLEEE!!! and also I love your videos so much, idk how you do it but you speak so concisely like HOW !?!? I feel like I ramble on for way too long and it's just a mess LOL
the henna way, riot baby and a couple of others are on my list too!!
Loved good omens TV show and really want to pick up the book eventually 😊
I read two of Toni Morrison's books for school--Jazz and Beloved. I don't think I gave them enough attention while reading because they were for school, but Beloved stands out more in my head. I should probably revisit her stuff
I loved this book haul so much! So glad to see you loved Dani Brown on Goodreads!
I picked up Take a Hint, Dani Brown too! The hype for it is real!!
I love The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes but I definitely think I wouldn’t have appreciated it enough if I hadn’t reread the trilogy right before for a refresher! There’s lots of parallels between the two that I wouldn’t of noticed otherwise!
I've heard great things about Riot Baby and I'm excited to read it. I've never read a Toni Morrison book either but I really want to read her books and I'm making it a goal for this year.
The Bluest Eye is my favorite Toni Morrison book, all of her writing is spectacular but I cried after finishing The Bluest Eye.
I too am an uncultured swine! My hubby is reading Beloved right, and he just bought Stamped from the Beginning. I’m hoping to eventually get to them too 😅
The Marrow Thieves is so good! I’m really excited for you to read it. I’d really recommend Indian Horse by Richard Wagamese. I think every Canadian needs to read that book. It should be your next literary fiction pick! Also a few more Indigenous author recommendations: Eden Robinson is my favourite Indigenous Canadian author and I love her book Monkey Beach. If you like dystopian books, Moon of the Crusted Snow by Waubgeshig Rice is amazing as well!
I love you so much. You always inspire me to read❤️❤️
Regarding Toni Morrison "The Bluest Eye" would probably be the "easier" ofv the two to read. It's more contemporary for the time it was written and has less speculative elements.
I LOVED take a hint dani brown, even more than get a life chloe brown :)
I read the ARC of The Invincible Summer of Juniper Jones and I was crying by the end. Loved the book so much!
Loved this video! Good Omens is great, I enjoyed the audiobook but I would say it’s slower than the show
Awesome book haul and I want to read so many of these! My mom is currently reading Stamped From the Beginning and says it’s really great. Hahah “I’m an uncultured swine and have never read Toni Morrison” 😂😂 I read Beloved recently in my AP Lit class and it was extremely powerful and incredible. I highly recommend the audiobooks because Toni Morrison herself reads them and she has just the most perfect voice and since she is narrating her own writing she reads it the way she intended it to be heard so it’s an amazing experience.💗
Wow okay I'M south asian and I had never heard of the Palace of Illusions! Definitely gonna have to check that out now!
I've read most of Neil Gaiman's books and Neverwhere is far & away my favorite! I hope you like it!
I just wowwwweeeeeeddddddd to see The Palace of Illusions.
For Indigenous books, I read The Back of the Turtle by Thomas King last year, and it was great - definitely would recommend.
I’m reading I’ll Be the One right now and I love it so far!
my tbr is screaming at me to stop adding books.
evidently i don’t listen to my tbr.
Love this haul! Great diverse choices that I need to look up 😊😊
for indigenous authors i highly recommend naomi fontaine, she is an innu quebec author and i just looked it up and sadly i think only one of her books was translated from french into english, kuessipan, but i read the book and saw the movie adaptation and it was amazing, highly recommend it/her!! the book is more fragments of life in this innu community but the movie builds a whole story around it and it’s amazing.
i also recommend natasha kanapé fontaine, also an innu quebec author, she is a poetess and i saw her perform live and it was superb, i see a few of her poetry has been translated into english but also a non fiction book called « kuei, my friend : a conversation about race and reconciliation » that i haven’t read yet BUT have heard nothing but praise about ^_^
I’m so excited to pick up Echo Brown too!
I really want to read "Normal People" I've heard amazing things about it! That and "Get a Life Chloe Brown" are my next bookish buys
Down World sounds interesting. I love the plot.
Cherie Dimaline’s latest book Empire of Wild is also a a great book
Down World sounds fascinating to me. I have a thing about portal fantasy so whenever I hear something even close to that I am very intrigued. I'll be honest though, I haven't read one like that yet
I would highly recommend Moon of the Crusted Snow by Waubgeshig Rice. It's a post-apocalyptic novel set in an Anishinaabe community in Northern Canada and it is incredible!
Ooo amazing, thank you for the rec!! ❤️
as an american, canadian literature is a strange and unique delicacy. its like, not as wild and mainstream as american books but like, so off the wall that im like, damn why didnt someone think of that? i have canadian-dar and its just, idk. im jealous that yall are more mature than us.
I had to mark The Henna Wars down! I’ve never really read any books with South Asians 😱 gotta fix that real quick
You're enabling my bad habit of buying more books before I can finish reading them 👀
Every one loves take a hint dani brown
I need to read a song is wraiths and ruin.
All the covers of these books😍
Hi. Thanks for the recommendations. I do read adult lit, but I've been on the fence about Normal People as there seem to be as many people who love it as don't. I'll be interested to see what you think.
Kim at Native Lady Book Warrior is a brand new indiginous creator. She hauled a lot of indiginous authors in today's video. She also reads a lot of fantasy. I'm really liking her videos.
Andreea at Infinite Text, and who is also Canadian, posted a great video last week listing some of her favorite indiginous authors.
Hope this helps.
There There by Tommy Orange is an amazing read! One of my favorite books that I’ve read in 2020.
Beloved by Toni Morrison is one of my favorite of her books. I first encounter her writing well, well over a decade ago as I was getting my undergrad in American Lit. Beloved was the first book I read by her and her writing just blew me away. Maybe it was because I was a new mom at the time, but thinking about this book still gives me chills. It is haunting and raw and real.
"Beloved
You are my sister
You are my daughter
You are my face; you are me
I have found you again; you have come back to me
You are my beloved
You are mine
You are mine"
Normal People, was...something. Still can't formulate real thoughts or feelings on it, but I get it's literary value as far as the writing goes. Unlike fantasy where I can suspend belief and fall in love with or hate characters, this is slice of life for these two main characters and I couldn't relate to either of them. It felt like a lot of privileged whining to me, even if I could grasp the struggles. By the end, I just wanted them to freaking talk to each other, I mean really, really talk.
Oooh would love to try Sally Rooney. I love reading adult literary fiction works by Paulo Coelho, and I enjoyed reading The Vegetarian by Han Kang. 😀🌱
Thanks for sharing Cherie Dimaline & Daven McQueen. 😀
There is a spin off (I believe that is what is called) of American Gods, entitled Anansi Boys. 📙👍
I just went and bought the majority of all these books 😍 I’m so excited but my wallet is echoing lol
💚
"Adult child" 😂
I looove your books
I think Sally Rooney is Irish btw. A good YA LGBT Canadian novel by and about indigenous people is Fire Song by Adam Garnet Jones
Love a good book haul! 💕💕💕
My Calamity Jane has a sapphic romance.
This is the best selling point 😍
Omg normal people is so good
Neverwhere is really cool book
I overall enjoyed Normal People, but it was extremely frustrating at times. You'll see what I mean :)
I can't wait to read I'll Be The One!
Love these videos to get reading inspiration! :))
amazing haul!!
Spent the entirety of this video trying to figure out what the series of pretty spines are to the left of your cheek/eye 🥺😍
Nice book haul!
❤️❤️❤️❤️
Where did you get that edition of American gods from? Xx
Just in case no one's told you this before.... GURL YOU SPEAK SO FASTTT?! Btw great taste
Neil Gaiman’s books are soooo slow. Spectacular plots but the pace is frustrating enough that I have never been able to finish a book by him
Amazing haul!
Hardcover or paperback?
Only mildly jealous of your haul xD xD
Also, There There by Tommy Orange is an own-voices book about a large cast of indigenous characters! Highly recommend!
My fave posted! Woohooo
I DNF Normal People. The first. 50 pages was just about the main characters having sex
Do you know any YA books that follows a Sri Lankan main Character?
