I like Steph’s encouragement here. Matt was doing musical theatre and modern dance, which he’s cringing at his old performances, but theatre and dance aren’t cringey just because they are what they are. I think he’s being very hypercritical of himself.
There's a common saying that I quote often whenever I feel my crafts aren't good enough for my friends and they actually really like it. "'You are you are own worst critic.'" I feel like MatPat is just being over-critical on his old videos. They're absolutely fine. Good on Steph for just being supportive during his times of 'I can't believe I did that.' They make a fantastic team.

It really wasn't that bad. Anyone I've known that has done theater often said that when you have a part, you forgo all humility and just put every bit of yourself into that part, no matter how silly or mortifying it is later. And from what I saw in that first dance, you did just that and killed it. I honestly don't think there was anything wrong with any of the parts displayed here.

A lot of people would probably make fun of Matt for the Modern Dance thing… but if you have actually ever taken a serious dance class, you would be giving him major props. I was an engineering major, but I decided to take a hip hop dance class as an elective when I was in university, and man was it a struggle. You had to have a certain amount of physicality to make moves look smooth and effortless, and you had to use almost all your muscles (including those you never thought you had). I was the one of like 2 boys in the class and the rest were girls that were performing arts majors and already pretty good at other forms of dance. Combine that with the fact it was my first dance class, rest assured, I embarrassed myself for 2 hours straight, twice a week, for a few months. But man was it fun by the end of it! Dance is no joke. Major props to Matt for being able to move like that and have fun with it.

I’ve seen lots of crunchy and abstract dance and I’ve seen weirder. So major props to you for taking the time to learn not only modern dance but also ballet, African and jazz!
