I remember reading that article on Yamai trying to balance the "bitter" and "sweet" of the older and newer staff. It honestly is baffling to me how the younger staff wanted to change the tone of the games. It might be that they came from playing Persona 4 which was at the height of its popularity at the time SMTIV was being made, but the overall tone of a game is a crucial part to any game's identity, even more so for SMT. If the audience wanted more "sweet" for SMT they'd just be playing Persona again. I did however really enjoyed SMTIV despite the development troubles it seemed to have. The success was probably due to Yamai's hand in trying to find some middle ground. General consensus for IVA though was great gameplay but a huge miss with the overall tone and characters. I hope this was a wakeup call for the younger developers that not everything has to "go along with the times". A game can evolve without having to throw away its identity, and from what we're seeing with SMTV, I think we're going in the right path.
Yamai basically chose neutral between sweet and bitter lmao Jokes aside I really like the balance of bitter and sweetness of IV, it doesn't lean to much on one end, it's truly neutral

She played it and eventually got to the boss right before the alignment lock (I won't spoil it too much, but I'm sure some of you will immediately know who I am talking about.) Anyway, she was having trouble with this boss because they had powerful physical skills and she came underprepared. She eventually recruited a Giremekhala in the area and brought him along because at this point she was getting desperate. The battle basically went how she expected to at first, with Flynn and the demons dying quickly, but the only demon left standing was Giremekhala. This boss kept getting their physical attacks reflected back at them and losing all their turns, while Giremekhala kept spamming attacks until it ran out of MP and just started punching the boss. This game was a great challenge. You can get absolutely crushed by low level enemies if you aren't careful. I went straight for another playthrough after I finished. Why not when there are tons of demons to collect and fuse and, multiple endings.
Wait for Apocalypse's many little annoying things... sometimes grouped together, other times a skirmish of 6 just because frick you. Also an App in there helps demons autoexploit weaknesses when in Auto Mode, to speed things up.
I just hope smt V has endings that make you question which one you prefer without every single one of them making you feel like shit because you fucked up the world. The devil survivor games are my favorites in terms of how endings work. In the extended cuts at least. They don't all lead to human extinction within a generation.
A lot of people seem to not like the more upbeat tone and the fact you have friends at all. I can understand it but I had no real issue with it personally since most SMT spinoffs are pretty similar. Some really messed up stuff does happen in it and the further you get the more bonkers everything gets, in a good way imo. Thanks for this video! Just got IV on the 3DS sale and V on Christmas and I don't know which one to get into first! Either one will be my first SMT game. If you see this or if anyone in the comments has an opinion let me know!
I don't think Apocalypse was that bad. At least it ended Jonthan and Walter's story nicely in the end. While also giving Navarre and Flynn some actual character. But God damn leave the characters to Persona, SMT has no real business trying that.
It's strange, I've seen other videos about these games where the people in the comments most said they liked Apocalypse more than the original. But here it's very much the other way. I honestly didn't care for the teenage characters in Apocalypse but I still thought it was nearly on par with IV.
Okay seriously I don't understand I haven't played it yet and I haven't watched a let's play because I want to experience it for myself but why do people hate apocalypse so much
Apocalypse is very different and strange game in terms of tone. Instead of the usual dark, bleak and almost opressive tone one of all other SMT games, you have this more friendly tone, you always have at least 2 other characters with you that joke around alot, even more than regular 4. Feels more like normal JRPG than any other SMT game. Hell you even have a super strange romance triangle with two girls, one of them being yout childhood friend.
@@akirathewildcard9625it is mostly because the writing of the game and the how it had a lighter tone Tho pretty much everyone agree that it had a great gameplay
@@akirathewildcard9625 You're right. There's no reason to hate it. I mean, it lacks in tone but it's still a pretty solid SMT game. The best in the series in terms of gameplay to date. And the story is not bad at all. The enemies, the themes that touches, the new perspective for neutral route. The plot is like a typical nekketsu (adventure and fighting shonen manga/anime) but a really good nekketsu. I don't hate it. It's not my favorite, I still prefer IV, and III Nocturne, and Strange Journey, and I, etc.. But IV Apocalypse is a fresh experience. Issue would be if all SMT start to be that way because of it. But as a standalone experience is nice.
I have managed to die trying to recruit in the first hours of the game. No fucking joke. I don't know if my game RNG just hated me that day or I was just THAT fucked trying to get them. But it took me like a dozen tries just to get my first demon. But yes, SMT4 good.
I honestly think Naraku itself is way harder than Minotaur lol. So many floors and next to no shortcuts. Poisonous floors. And it's the first dungeon. Atlus, what were you smoking?
wait wait wait So your telling me if I were to constantly get the same demon over and over again I would just constantly get better skills for my personal character? Is there even a cap for that
10:48 you dying there is actually not Walter's fault. If you notice, he crit your character unsmirked. Thererfore, you would have died that turn regardless if Walter used Agi or not lol. Not to mention your Centaur was smirking the whole time, so it made little difference lol.
I randomly stopped playing this game at some point, and idk why. It certainly wasn't cause of the game, I love what I've played up to the point I stopped. :P I gotta go back to it at some point (Preferably after looking at a recap or something. Lol).
Sooo..... Basically a lot of stupid shit happened with the european version.... Including a case of Atlus feeling Europeans do not like rpgs..... ..........Yeah fun times...They where not intending to release it here at all originally...... They are kinda pulling the same shit with SMT5, oh we are getting the physical, but getting the collectors edition was miserable, Atlus gave the sale rights for it in europe to nintendo, who basically did fuck all meaning we kinda got screwed........ Yay...... I snagged one on import...... Nintendo and Atlus when it comes to Europe though......... Yay....

U don't have to sell me SMT IV, I bought Twice and Apocalypse...but Apo is kinda......bad, as in the characters are Persona characters.
Sorry Macca but to me the best game on the 3ds is and will always be Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate.
Played both but still prefer IV as the best 3DS games. Both are too different types of rpgs anyway. MH4U is still a gem.
Based and hunter pilled
I love this
Smt iv is one of my favorite games of all time! Definitely recommend 👌
I love your content and would love to fully watch this video but I simply can’t stomach anything that involves SimplyDad after what happened to me on a personally
It annoys me how many people are out there that don’t understand the journey they could go on by playing SMT4 and 4A
Fuck 4A respectfully.
@@yeoungduck8782 why :(
My 3ds doesn't have room to download the game...
@@Fermin-hw5pd buy a Sd card they’re cheap
@@RandomParkShots I know, I bought one for the Switch, but I have been using the 3ds one for years, won't I lose the content of the games if I change it?
11:05 I think you meant demon sources from Strange Journey.
LETS GOOOOOO
Ayy tokusatsu influence in smt I can dig it.
I wouldn't mind a switch port
Also last note I found a loose physical copy but they wanted 75 bucks..
who jonath again?
Damn you couldve made me Jonathan.
Macca, I don't think you need to do these videos with someone else. Your style is very likable. Simply dad is a bit crass and sounds like he just smoked a blunt. I was excited to see an smt four video that wasn't his. Oh well, I still love your work.
I was drunk as hell when I recorded my lines yeah good catch

I literally cannot find this game anywhere here in the UK. 😫 Fortunately, I do have apocalypse. These games seems to be rare nowadays.
There isn't a physical release for smt iv in the UK, it's digital only
Thanks for this video! Just got IV on the 3DS sale and V on Christmas and I don't know which one to get into first! Either one will be my first SMT game. If you see this or if anyone in the comments has an opinion let me know!
I hope they bring this and 4A to Switch soon
I don't think Apocalypse was that bad. At least it ended Jonthan and Walter's story nicely in the end. While also giving Navarre and Flynn some actual character. But God damn leave the characters to Persona, SMT has no real business trying that.
It's strange, I've seen other videos about these games where the people in the comments most said they liked Apocalypse more than the original. But here it's very much the other way. I honestly didn't care for the teenage characters in Apocalypse but I still thought it was nearly on par with IV.
good video dude
Welp, if you need help with the smt 4 final video 👀
Sorry for being stupid, but how does Strange Journey SMT links with SMT IV?
Okay seriously I don't understand
I haven't played it yet and I haven't watched a let's play because I want to experience it for myself but why do people hate apocalypse so much
Apocalypse is very different and strange game in terms of tone.
@@alsaiduq4363 I mean I geuss I see how that could be less than ideal but I still don't see why some people hate it so much
@@akirathewildcard9625it is mostly because the writing of the game and the how it had a lighter tone
Tho pretty much everyone agree that it had a great gameplay
The story isn't even as bad as portrayed. Its like people forget there is more than one way to cope with the crap going on around you.
I have managed to die trying to recruit in the first hours of the game. No fucking joke. I don't know if my game RNG just hated me that day or I was just THAT fucked trying to get them. But it took me like a dozen tries just to get my first demon. But yes, SMT4 good.
Um I'd like to mention smt 4 has auto attack on the shoulder ds buttons for speeding up the combat just thought I'd mention this for ya =)
I honestly think Naraku itself is way harder than Minotaur lol. So many floors and next to no shortcuts. Poisonous floors. And it's the first dungeon. Atlus, what were you smoking?
wait wait wait
So your telling me if I were to constantly get the same demon over and over again I would just constantly get better skills for my personal character?
Is there even a cap for that
10:48 you dying there is actually not Walter's fault. If you notice, he crit your character unsmirked. Thererfore, you would have died that turn regardless if Walter used Agi or not lol. Not to mention your Centaur was smirking the whole time, so it made little difference lol.
Well man i wanna play but bueno pues soy de un infierno de economía llamado Argentina y el eshop se cayo so ¿how do i play it?
The only video in this series I can’t watch because I can’t stand Simply Dad…
In my opinion, the music of SMT just Doo doos all over Persona.
I randomly stopped playing this game at some point, and idk why. It certainly wasn't cause of the game, I love what I've played up to the point I stopped. :P
I gotta go back to it at some point (Preferably after looking at a recap or something. Lol).
Macca 😯
I vote Majin Tensei 1&2 as future videos ? 😬
do soul hackers, too, even if it is not mainline.
Shit, I'd help with Apocalypse if I could
smt 4 best game lets gooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yay....
Awesome game. Sadly I had to wait for over a year to play it. Region lock on a handheld sucks.
i want Selling me apocalypse
Genial
It's crazy to me that after this game, people are able to praise SMTV. That game is so half-assed its not even funny.
