gotta be In Utero. there's just so much goodness 🙏
"God Hears The Pleas Of The Innocent" - Killdozer.
The smaller bands he recorded helped him get where he was and unlike some other producers...e.g. Vig, he never left the underground behind. I remember a member of Killdozer (mentioning no names) telling me a few years back that Vig (the millionaire) asked to be on their guest list, to say they weren't happy is an understatement. Albini would give you a flat rate and that was it, never going to make a lot of money that way but at least he stuck to his principles.
RIP legend, also very chilling that his last album as a producer was The Above by Code Orange which has themes of death & transcending into another life throughout
Sad he worked with such a crappy band
@@SaraBourbonNight your negativity is very unnecessary right now 🤫
recording engineer, not… absolutely not “producer”. he tried to drill that into heads for decades, so do him the honor or calling him what he wanted.
There's a new Shellac album coming out on May 17th!
@@SaraBourbonNight *a band he was a fan of & loved working with, it’s sad you have to desperately try to tarnish other’s art while adding nothing of value to anyone
In Utero is one of the best produced albums from Steve Albini. His raw production style is seriously one that stays with you long after an album he produced is over.
A record engineer for hundreds of bands, including a huge chunk of some of my favorite musicians of all time. Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Low, Slint, Nirvana, Pixies, Mogwai, Hum, Fugazi, Bedhead, Mono, Chevelle, Don Caballero, just to name a few of my favorites. If you're a fan of modern rock you come across his work every day. Absolute legend, and one of the greatest figures in music of all time. RIP.
R.I.P. Steve. Can’t believe it! So many albums that he produced, from hidden and obscure to genre - defining and innovative, were ones that I listened to and found a spark in. Big Black, Nirvana, Slint, etc. Crazy to think I’ve been deep - diving this year and last into his catalog, only to get this news.
Yes forgot to mention Slint!!!
Learned just yesterday scrolling insta, from Thurston Moore's post. I came across the words "Steve Albini was" and instantly i yelled out loud "NO!" for the first time since EVH passed. This is a big one, thank you for helping us process this and honor the legacy and the man. He coulda made pop with a premium fee and lived lavishly in the Hills, but instead stayed true for life to the Ethos. ❤
Legends never die.
Punk lives!
No way! 😢 He was much too young. One of my favorite things he produced was Veruca Salt’s “Blow It Out Your Ass” EP. He always managed to bring out the hard edge in every artist he worked with. R.I.P.
How fitting his final credit was The Above, because that’s where he’s going.
How do you know where he is going? Was he Christian?
@@catpocalypsenow8090 Does it really matter?
The news ruined my day. Steve Albini was of course a legend, but he was really someone I really looked up to, even though I'm not a musician, everything from his work ethic and ethos, his musicianship, his sense of humor and passion, I admired him, I always wished I could've met him or see him live with Shellac, and speaking of which, their newest album is coming out next week, that's gonna be harrowing to listen since its his singing, guitar playing and engineering. I can't name just one record he worked on because I've adored every album he's engineered, but one that its a bit underrated I want to highlight is Bodychoke's Five Prostitutes, that's a British noise rock band that deserves some praise, but that particular album is to me, a perfect encapsulation of noise rock, and also how Steve Albini's analogue recording truly shined in a chaotic but hypnotizing manner.
Torn to shreds, bleeding because of the news. Steve, we love you. Such a talented musician and producer. Because of you the musical landscape is a garden. Than you for being born, embracing what you loved. God bless you. Rest in peace legend. 😢
💔
My favorite Albini recorded/engineered project is a little-known one-off EP called, "Wow to the Deadness" by Steve Taylor & the Danielson Foil.
Fun Fact: Steve Taylor, the lead singer on that project, was the guy that discovered Chevelle and signed them to their first record contract.
This guy called out what was wrong with the music industry before it was cool to do that. He was as outspoken as he was talented, and he knew what quality music was when he heard it.
I always had respect for him. It's too bad he's gone...
Rest easy mate.. you were brilliant 🙏🏻😞 in utero is one of my favourite records he worked on. He was absolutely awesome...smh.. bloody hell...
Steve was always a gentleman, direct and honest, and absolutely dryly hilarious. Favorite Albini albums that aren't his own bands: Jaks - Hollywood Blood Capsules, Slint - Tweez, Jesus Lizard (all of them), OM - God Is Good, Liturgy - 93696, Uzeda (all albums)
A gentleman? lol.
RIP to a legend.
I... have everything to say and nothing to say. Such a devastating loss beyond belief.
Absolute badass! Proud to have gone to the same high school as this legend.
This man lit a fire in so many forward thinking musicians and made it possible for some many artists to go against the grain and win on their own terms. Legend in every sense of the word
Couldn't agree more. Keep the Faith. Carry the torch❤️🔥
Man that's wild, I was just listening to interviews with him just a couple of days ago.
RIP Steve Albini , musical genius, may your music live on forever... Much ❤ from down under ..
My mum is 61! Even though 81 isn’t old it also it’s young.
R.I.P. Steve. Manic Street Preachers' "Journal for Plague Lovers" is a favorite, nobody saw a whole album of Richey lyrics come out the vault like that and for it to have the In Utero side of the Albini thumbprint all over it was perfect given that the end of Kurt's era sort of lined up chronologically with Richey's. It needed a raw, heavy edge for a trio who'd been softening up in the studio for 15 years and that was his upside for any artist: that raw, heavy, yet unpolished and unpretentious analog production practice.
Cloud Nothings' "Attack on Memory" is a classic too
For anyone interested in knowing Albini's style I highly recommend Jesus Lizard's Goat. It's pretty much the template for everything Albini was known for. Roomy drums, clanky basses, jagged guitars and raw vocals. Don't get me wrong, he was a pretty versatile producer, but in this specific type of sound he was unparalleled
Don't get me wrong, he's a nice guy, I like him just fine, but he's a mouthbreather...
@@knowbuddy6139Hey! I thought I was the first one to quote that lyric in response to the news! 😂
During the darkest year of my life (16 years old back in 1993), his work in Big Black was one of the few things that kept my sanity intact.
I had moved from a major city in the SF Bay Area to a town in the middle of nowhere. Think of the song Kerosene and you'll get the idea.
I cannot put into words how much the music of Big Black, Skinny Puppy, Misfits, Gwar, Ministry and Nine Inch Nails truly kept my sanity intact.
Steve's passing has hit me hard. Really hard.
His impact will be felt for a very long time, and his presence will be missed dearly.
I recorded ten albums of music with him starting in 1994 at his house before he opened Electrical Audio. Shocked at this news. A good friend and a pure artist with integrity. Rest in peace Steve
Wow. Thank you for sharing, you’re lucky to have had that experience with him. RIP.
@@BeyondARTV take a listen to my two bands Barb Wire Dolls “Slit” & Prince Of Lilies “Vent” - we did both albums from both of my bands in just two days each. Steve was a very close friend and he put his magic into our music
"A pure Artist with Integrity"
Perfectly said, and those qualities are worth more than their weight in gold. Thank you.
@@dpclerks09 I recorded my first album in 1983 and been in the music scene since then and only Albini and Lemmy qualify for that award 🥇
R.I.P. legendary producer.
Rest in paradise. Chicago native here. Love all the work you’ve done over the years. In Utero got me through some dark and tough times.
Rip Stephen Albini, you will be missed
I was lucky to visit and meet him at his studio in Chicago. Such a humble and cool guy. RIP ❤🤘🏻
Gone too soon. May he rest in peace
R.I.P. Steve Albini
He had a great sense of humor
I met Steve in the late 1980s when he was the touring sound man for "The Jesus Lizard". He was manning the T-shirt sales as well. Well, I was young and asked stupid questions about his guitar gear and he was nice but sort of, "your bothering me kid..." which I was. What an artist and future music HOF inductee.
"Don't get me wrong, he's a nice guy, and I like him just fine... but he's a mouthbreather" 💔
While a student at North Western U, Steve did an art project that involved setting up a large plexiglass screen that he stood behind and screamed insults at frat boys, while they hurled bricks at him. No shit.
Whoa...that feels like it encapsulates his Spirit💔
Steve was the one who got me into producing my own music. I grew up surrounded by so many iconic records that he produced (Surfer Rosa, In Utero, etc) and some of the more obscure stuff like Slint, Low, Sunn O))), etc. His philosophy has always resonated with me, and I hope that Electrical Audio will still be open. It's been a huge dream of mine to record with him, but unfortunately, he passed before I could get the chance. I hope someone out there has collected footage from his recording sessions throughout the years and compiles them into a documentary series. It would be great for his knowledge to be even more accessible, further cementing his incredible legacy. Rest in peace Steve.
Failure's Comfort record is stellar, but the SOUND of that very first first snare drum strike on Bone Machine changed music forever.
just found out the news, honestly his death has really really bothered me, rip to a legend
Same here. I never met him, but I love his work and his Spirit, and it feels like losing an older brother or cousin something.
Rip to him
you know he was a paedophile, right?
Thanks for making this video man, much respect!
Rest peace Steve Albini. Thank you for everything made rock song and record. Favorite artist
Noooo!! This makes me sad because this guy was my favorite audio engineer and he got me into that!!! 😭 The powerful drum sound and the dynamic range on Surfer Rosa by the Pixies and In Utero by Nirvana always blew my mind.
The Jesus Lizard “Goat” & his own band Shellac’s debut “At Action Park” are 2 of my absolute favorite albums of all time.
When I read the news yesterday it literally was a gut punch. I audibly let out a sound that had my coworkers thinking I was having a heart attack of my own.
I wanted to see Shellac live so bad but I live in Florida & he stayed far away from this place when it came to touring.
The new album coming out is gonna be special being that it’s his Swan song. Condolences to his wife, Bob Weston, Todd Trainer & all that knew & loved him.
…what a fuckin bummer. 😢
Thank you, Steve was the face of allt rock. Surfer Rosa and Rid of Me are albums I can't live without.
Shocked. What a great engineer and artist. I can imagine owning a studio these days is a stressful job.
In Utero remains one of my top 10 favorite albums, it wouldn’t have been what it was without him, his contributions to music are much more impactful then many people know. RIP
Very nice tribute man
Absolute legend, a man of integrity. RIP
I am stunned. I am grateful I had the pleasure of recoding with this man years ago. His loss is our loss. RIP
unreal. he was one of my greatest heroes in music. well, still is.
Mclusky Do Dallas was my most listened to album in 2022, and I of course have Albini to not only thank for his work on it, but I only found out about the album because I was looking through his list of albums he engineered. RIP, a genuine tragedy.
It was his favorite. He loved Andy Falkous.
Saw him around Chicago back in the day- the guy was kind of a low key alt-rock pillar. Lots of people going to early now.
As a working class musician Steve was a voice I took for granted. I just assumed he'd always keep producing records, sharing his knowledge, and most importantly, bitching about bad music. And now he's gone and the world feels a little more quiet.
I've seen a lot of his friends muse about this - but he would absolutely hate videos like this and the fact that we're giving him so much attention, and that makes me smile. RIP Steve.
I'll be lucky if I don't bust out crying. Subscibed friend
RIP Mr. Albini, you were the GOAT.
Man Im 40 but this kid intro'd me to Steve just a couple years ago. He told me about his views on the industry, finance and recording techniques. I jammed tf out of Shellac at a very strange time in my life. I had high admiration for Steve and what he represented. Very disappointed. But glad he was here.
RIP! I began researching him when I was struck by the amazing quality jump between P.J. Harvey's first and second albums. And yes, "Where Is My Mind" by the Pixies, The Breeders... Seeing his Steve Albini's name on the cover of a record was a sure predictor of said album's greatness.
He will be greatly missed.
So sad. R.I.P. Steve Albini ✌🏼
I hope Steve inspires future generations of producers and engineers.
Crazy loss. Dude should have worked another 20 years. Brutal.
Just heard the news, I'm sadden to hear about Steve's passing. RIP Steve will truly be missed.
Damn. Tragic loss. A new Shellac album is dropping in a couple weeks too. R.I.P.
The Wedding Present, Seamonsters. One of the greatest albums ever recorded. Thank you, Steve RIP.
I’m on an obscure Ampex mailing list for reel to reels, last week I asked what would be the best r2r for home recording and Steve answered. I was so geeked out to see him on there. Often you don’t look at the names on the emails on mailing lists.
Steve, I still can't believe you're gone. You did an honest and fruitful job, especially for those struggling alt bands with no money. And to think I wanted to write to thank you for everything, especially that amazing interview about 'Fake Italian'.
Rest in peace🌹 I miss you a lot.
Rip to a legend
This one hurts…. Shellac is amazing. When he worked with the Manics I was so happy. Best Sean tracks ever.
Steve Albini...😎.. Life long Inspiration🍻 I mean, I got a Nirvana head tattoo, because of In Utero🤘
Love Steve Albini, thanks for the raw and real -PREXENTS #prexents
Prayer to God is my favorite song of all time, RIP this legend.
In Utero is one of the most beautiful sounding noise rock records.
'Earth Atomiser Lets Go'
Big Black...
The second genuinely frightening record i listened too after encountering
'Surferosa' by the Pixies.
An amazing body of work with great integrity. ❤
RIP ... Steve Albini
R.I.P. Steve. 61 may have been far too young but one has to take into consideration he lived three lifetimes, one as the founder of three influential post-hardcore bands, another as an extremely talented and innovative audio engineer with a couple of thousand albums to his name, and one as an all around great guy with an infectious sense if humor.
Off topic, but shoutout to the Manic Street Preachers. The Holy Bible is, probably, my favorite by them. The lyrical content on that album is out of this world, cold, and bleak. Resonated well then, resonates greatly now. Richey’s writing was something else. He and Albini will be missed and there will be no one like them ever.
Thank you for your coverage of Albini's work and legacy; you did it with grace and passion.
Thank you.
This is really sad, I’ve watched so many interviews of him over the years and he just came across as a really good guy. Not to mention his talent as ‘a recorder’ and musician. RIP Steve
PJ Harvey “Rid of Me” is an album I’d recommend to someone who doesn’t know who Steve Albini was. RIP. You were 1 of the best
Its well sad..steve lived a pretty clean life from what i could always see...that is well young... that guy had far more to give..that sucks....music will miss steve ...hope his studio continues....he would have wanted that...and i hope it keeps to steves ideals ..cos the guy was the real deal ...a fair honest man ...that was about the music .not fame ..money...the guy had some serious talent...what a shame
RIP Steve ;( such a music producer and legend.
Gutted. Just gutted. ❤
fuckkk man this one hits deep, he's made so many of my fav songs.. 61 is way too young 💔
on the upside...i'm wearing the exact same Nirvana shirt right now, just in black 😅
🙌
Yeah I remember when I designed that shirt.
Rip Steve! Thank you for all your hard work brother.. 🌞❤️✨
What a legend.
I'm playing Rid of Me *loud* when I get back from work today.
RIP
RIP Steve Albini So many of my favourite albums by bands that you worked with. Thanks so much for all your work and my love gos out to your Family and friends

this news crushed me all day. the new shellac album was like a week from dropping too. seeing albini live was on the bucket list but I am glad he went peacefully
We should all strive everyday to be like Steve... in every way.
Keep the Faith. Carry the torch💔
The albums he helped create really helped me get through some shit. Honestly, this was tremendous blow to me personally. Was looking forward to OFF!'s farewell show in Chicago with Shelac opening. Was going to be a hell of a show. Now I can't imagine going without him there.
So sad he’s the man behind so many records I’ve been inspired by. Don caballero for respect, pixies surfer Rosa, nirvana in utero, METZ strange peace, the breeders pod, I could go on and on. I loved his organic approach. Big black and Shellac which he fronted and performed both amazing. Huge upsets for the music community.
Volcano Suns- "Career In Rock". An unheralded classic.
Thank you
Huge influence on everyone whether they know it or not
Hail "Buyer's Market".
Best rock n roll album for all times)

Hey was only 61 wtf! Went and looked it up, came back and wrote that right as you said he passed away at 61. Should have kept watching. Anyways, thats ridiculous. I can't believe he passed away smh. I'm so grateful for his contribution to music.
The World of Music lost a Giant whose shoulders many of us stand upon, whether we realize it or not. Thank you for everything, Steven, and Godspeed on your journey!💔
Dude worked with HUM, of all bands… that I wasn’t aware of after the fact. Kudos!
🙌
@@BeyondARTV The rather unfortunate detail I did find out about Albini is that he was into kiddy pron, a kiddy pron magazine called PURE and was friends with its creator, Peter Sotos. Sotos got himself in trouble with the law and Albini would continue to peddle that content.

This hurts.
Rest in peace. I’m only 2 years younger than him. Eerie that someone so close to my age who was so full of life.
An underrated band that I've been obsessed with for a year is a band called Mclusky, and their album Mclusky Do Dallas sounds SO FANTASTIC because of Steve Albini's raw, yet detailed recording techniques. Its probably the best sounding record he's ever produced imo. I was so heartbroken by the news, as I had also been a fan of Big Black and Shellac for the longest time.
Steve Albini produced albums in a way that'd grab your ear, but not at first. His records sound good, though it's hard to pin down exactly why at first.
Over time you realise that for the most part, it's because he gets out of the way & lets the band do their thing. Every recording has the space for each instrument & textural detail to flourish, without compromising the vision each band had. There's an incredible intensity in the records he recorded, even today the sound of these albums is raw & emotive.
As a fan of punk & noise music, Big Black set a high standard which stands toe to toe with current offerings from the likes of Chat Pile & Model/Actriz. Incredibly influential music, incredibly influential style & incredibly forward thinking in his creative endeavours. His professional ethos is also immensely respectable, he really cared about the work he produced, the artists he worked with & the industry he worked in. Certainly quite critical of his peers, though also honest in his personal reflections & acknowledgement of his own shortcomings.
It's a hell of a loss. The video was lovely & considerate, it's encouraging to see others recognise & articulate how significant he was. Gone too soon.
I wanna shout out 'Fire Works', an album he recorded with High Dependency Unit in 2001. It's a spacious, textural rock album by a band from my hometown
