As a Greek person, they truly did a great job displaying a Greek man and his mother here. Greeks are extremely close with their families, and a Greek mother is known for making dinner for their adult children. Greek men always look after their mothers, too. They love listening to Greek music and the bouzouki. Love and appreciate the Greek elements in The Exorcist!
I just love this scene with father Damien and his mother.Although I am not Greek,I just love the music.Especially the Rembetika from Asia Minor.I remember an old neighbor who was a good friend of my grandmother.She was born in 1900 in Smyrna, Ottoman Turkey.Her family fled Turkey in 1922 to Greece and then migrated to the United States later.But she had tons of old 78s .Greek, Armenian, Jewish and Turkish records.Recordings from 1905 to 1920.Still playable that could be played on the hi fi in her home.Even though she also had two workable wind up Victrolas in her home.Whenever I visited her with my grandmother,I would often ask her if I could listen.Even if I couldn't understand the language.It was some of the most beautiful music I ever heard.She identified herself as a Pontic Greek whose ancestors lived there in Turkey since antiquity.
@@coolantonio19 I remember as a young man visiting a Greek record store in Astoria Queens in the late 1980s.I was in my mid thirties and the store was called the Parthenon.I am a very fair skinned African American so you can imagine the amusing looks I received from the Greek employees in the store.I already knew how strongly the Greeks felt in protecting their ancient culture and heritage.I sensed this with the friend of my grandmother and the friend's family.The American born Greeks that I went to high school and College with all went to Greek Schools in NYC.And they all were encouraged by their parents, grandparents to maintain strong ties to Greece and beyond to pass down to their future descendants.So when I walked into the store,the first thing I asked for was vintage Rembetika recordings.Then I mentioned the various artists I was looking for.They were astounded.It really broke the ice.Lol I guess it showed I wasn't casing the joint.I engaged in conversation for nearly an hour.They thanked me for my patronage.Before i left I said,"May the beauty of the music and the food of all the peoples of the world bring us all together.For these two things of many shows our true humanity as human beings".

Βασιλική Μαλιαρού λεγόταν η ηθοποιός που έκανε την μητέρα του Πάτερ Καρρά και δεν είχε ξαναπαίξει σε ταινία.Ο William Friedkin την ανακάλυψε σε ένα ελληνικό εστιατόριο και την διάλεξε γιατί έμοιαζε πολύ στην δική του μητέρα.Επίσης πέθανε πριν την κυκλοφορία της ταινίας στις αίθουσες...
The scenes of father Karras with his mother are so heartbreaking and devastating. A very old woman living alone and ending up dying alone in an asylum. Real life is more cruel and terrifying than any movie and i think that it was the writer's/ director's intention to show.
I come from a Greek family on my dads side and the amount of Love I have felt from that side I've never forgotten Damien Karras' mother for example you can see exactly the way most old style Europeans are they want to remain close to their families and never leave them to live in a nursing home or hospital. God rest her soul My Yaiyia (grandmother) she spoke with these words to my dad and his Brother and Sister. God rest her soul miss her every day.
For some reason I find this scene to be one of the darkest and most depressing in the film. I think Friedkin knew exactly what he was doing with this - the undertones of guilt, despair, loneliness, and in the background even the music on the radio is creating a sense of ominosity and tension. The bit at the end of the scene, where he retunes the radio as there are several voices speaking over each other, is also an interesting foreshadowing of a later scene, when he’s listening to recordings of the multiple voices coming from Reagan. Such a clever film.

Astoria radio... Θεωρώ πως για όσους καταλαβαίνουν, αυτή η σκηνή με τα λόγια του κλασικού τραγουδιού της Σακελλαρίου, είναι ίσως η πιο τρομακτική της ταινίας. Φοβερή σύμπτωση! O W. Friedkin, διάλεξε λογικά δυο από τα δημοφιλέστερα ελληνικά τραγούδια που έπαιζαν εκείνη την εποχή (1973) στο ραδιοφωνικό σταθμό των Ελλήνων της Ν. Υόρκης, και το ένα περιέγραφε όλη την ιστορία της ταινίας: «Είσαι αρρώστια μου, μεσ’ τα στήθη μου και πως να σε βγάλω».
Η μονη στιγμή στον Εξορκιστή που νιώθεις κάπως καλά και οικεια(που γυρναει μπουμερανγκ μετα) είναι όταν ακούει η Ελληνοαμερικάνα μάνα του Father Carras το Ιστορία μου Αμαρτία μου λίγο πριν πεθάνει...Θρυλική Ρίτα Σακελλαρίου ακόμα και για λίγο έκανε διεθνή καριέρα μέσω Εξορκιστή και ίσως μεγαλύτερη απο όλες τις άλλες...πλην Βίκυ Λέανδρος .Για τους Ελληνες ο Εξορκιστης αυτο το ανυπερβλητα φρικιαστικο αριστουργημα του Τρομου ειναι λιγακι πιο τρομακτικο ειδικα στην σκηνη που Δαιμονας παιρνει την μορφη της γριας πεθαμενης μανας του Πατερα Καρρας
Good Q. When Karras and Chris McNeil first met, she asked him how a priest became a shrink. He told her it was the other way around. My only explanation would be with Karras already having a Christian background..., he may have been a Greek Catholic, or converted to Catholism. I never read the book. Perhaps it's explained in it.

Είναι μια ταινία με ανεπανάληπτη σκηνοθεσία και παραγωγή, όμως υπήρξαν αντιρρήσεις για το gore περιεχόμενο που μάλιστα αφορούσε ανήλικο, καθως και για την φαινομενική νίκη του κακού απέναντι στο καλό. Πάντως για την Δυτική κουλτούρα που είναι κατά βάση Χριστιανική, παραμένει η πιο τρομακτική ταινία όλων των εποχών.

Συγκινηθηκα γιατι εντελως τυχαια την εβλεπα πριν 3-4 βραδια στο Σταρ και πρεπει να ηταν HD η εικονα.Τα χρωματα ηταν πιο ζωντανα αυτη τη φορα. Για τα τραγουδια να πουμε οτι οντως το ενα ειναι της Ριτας Σακελλαριου και το αλλο ειναι του Γιαννη Καλατζη, το Παραμυθακι μου.
It’s hard to believe that even back in 1973, Astoria Queens had a building Greek population. If you listen carefully in the broadcast they’re mentioning something that’s on Astoria Boulevard.

Νομίζω, οι συντελεστές της ταινίας επέλεξαν ένα πολύ δυνατό και χαρακτηριστικό τραγούδι το οποίο δεν είναι άσχετο με την όλη πλοκή της ταινίας... Όποιος την έχει δει καταλαβαίνει τι λέω... Πρέπει να την δείτε αυτή την ταινία... Πέρα από το γεγονός ότι αποτελεί σταθμό είναι και μια πάρα πολύ καλή ταινία. Προτείνω δε, να δείτε την extended version και όχι την πετσοκομμένη. Γεια!
I always thought Mrs karras was Italian but was actually Greek. It seemed she had some kind of medical condition that affected her leg, I'm assuming she had circulation issues or was diabetic.
Η Vasiliki Maliaros γεννημένη στην Ελλάδα το 1883 και δυστυχώς έφυγε σε ηλικία 89 χρονων χωρίς να προλάβει να δει την ταινία! Δεν ήταν ηθοποιός, την βρήκε ο σκηνοθέτης της ταινίας σε ένα Ελληνικό εστιατόριο στην Αμερική :)
Την ταινία την είδα όταν ειμουν 15 χρόνων και πριν την δω δεν ήξερα ότι ο Εξορκιστής είναι Ελληνας.... Επίσης ο 2ος Εξορκιστής ήταν ορθόδοξος και αυτό το δείχνει στον Εξορκιστή 4 και 5 που και καλά ήταν prequel και έδειχνε την ζωή του όταν ήταν νέος!!!
Ταινία που είναι εξαιρετικά φορτισμένη συναισθηματικά αλλα σε ένα σημείο που τώρα πρόσεξα και γέλασα είναι η στιγμή στο 1:12 που η Ελληνίδα μάνα του βάζει 10 κιλά φέτα στο τραπέζι. Ακόμα και αυτή η λεπτομέρεια αν σκεφτείς πόσο εύστοχη ήταν για την απεικόνιση της Ελληνικής οικογένειας. Απίστευτη ταινία.

The actress that plays her, Vasiliki Maliaros, was a Greek woman spotted by Friedkin in a Greek restaurant in NYC. Prior to this role, she had no acting experience whatsoever, and this film was her only role. Before the film was released, on February 9, 1973, Maliaros died at 89-years-old of natural causes.
I did not know that. How terribly sad she didn’t live to experience it all for herself. I love watching her in this movie. She reminds me of my great grandmother. May she Rest In Peace.

If you notice his mother’s got Greek icons , so she’s orthodox, so he must’ve chosen another path but obviously his mother approves because he’s a priest a man of God. She obviously knows the Catholics believe just as much as orthodox so there’s no judgement she loves him as her son .

When I was a young girl, I thought she was speaking Spanish so when I watched with my little Mexican friends I asked them to translate and they're like "That's not Spanish, we can't tell".lol Yrs later, I thought it was Italian, lol And NOW I finally know it's Greek. Romance languages do sound a bit similar.

Είναι μια ταινία με ανεπανάληπτη σκηνοθεσία και παραγωγή, όμως υπήρξαν αντιρρήσεις για το gore περιεχόμενο που μάλιστα αφορούσε ανήλικο, καθως και για την φαινομενική νίκη του κακού απέναντι στο καλό. Πάντως για την Δυτική κουλτούρα που είναι κατά βάση Χριστιανική, παραμένει η πιο τρομακτική ταινία όλων των εποχών.

Συγκινηθηκα γιατι εντελως τυχαια την εβλεπα πριν 3-4 βραδια στο Σταρ και πρεπει να ηταν HD η εικονα.Τα χρωματα ηταν πιο ζωντανα αυτη τη φορα. Για τα τραγουδια να πουμε οτι οντως το ενα ειναι της Ριτας Σακελλαριου και το αλλο ειναι του Γιαννη Καλατζη, το Παραμυθακι μου.

Νομίζω, οι συντελεστές της ταινίας επέλεξαν ένα πολύ δυνατό και χαρακτηριστικό τραγούδι το οποίο δεν είναι άσχετο με την όλη πλοκή της ταινίας... Όποιος την έχει δει καταλαβαίνει τι λέω... Πρέπει να την δείτε αυτή την ταινία... Πέρα από το γεγονός ότι αποτελεί σταθμό είναι και μια πάρα πολύ καλή ταινία. Προτείνω δε, να δείτε την extended version και όχι την πετσοκομμένη. Γεια!

Την ταινία την είδα όταν ειμουν 15 χρόνων και πριν την δω δεν ήξερα ότι ο Εξορκιστής είναι Ελληνας.... Επίσης ο 2ος Εξορκιστής ήταν ορθόδοξος και αυτό το δείχνει στον Εξορκιστή 4 και 5 που και καλά ήταν prequel και έδειχνε την ζωή του όταν ήταν νέος!!!

Ταινία που είναι εξαιρετικά φορτισμένη συναισθηματικά αλλα σε ένα σημείο που τώρα πρόσεξα και γέλασα είναι η στιγμή στο 1:12 που η Ελληνίδα μάνα του βάζει 10 κιλά φέτα στο τραπέζι. Ακόμα και αυτή η λεπτομέρεια αν σκεφτείς πόσο εύστοχη ήταν για την απεικόνιση της Ελληνικής οικογένειας. Απίστευτη ταινία.
Και από το 0:58 έως το 1:08 παίζει το τραγούδι "Να χα την δύναμη" νομιζω είναι η εκτέλεση του Μητροπανου.

If you notice his mother’s got Greek icons , so she’s orthodox, so he must’ve chosen another path but obviously his mother approves because he’s a priest a man of God. She obviously knows the Catholics believe just as much as orthodox so there’s no judgement she loves him as her son .
