I thought the argentina manager has been tactically very adaptable. He played 4 cms to match croatias 4 cms and vs the dutch, he matched the back 3. This argentina squad has def proved me wrong over the course of the tournament. They got bench strength and a manager thats flexible enough to use it. messi definitely deserved an argentina side w/ managerial and player quality. Young guys like julian alvarez enzo fernandez and alexis macallister have been incredible this tournament. Correct me if im wrong but idk if argentina ever had this deep of a midfield b4. they used to have defenders and attackers, but never had this depth and quality in the central areas fron whay i remember. Last class mids i member were cambiasso and macherano b4 he became a center back. Was zanetti a mid?
Their adamant to play side ways in attack using their technical ability to beat the first man always and then just continue vertically through teams is something I noticed and got very impressed by. It looks as though it is rehearsed by all 1 players. Credit to their manager too for breaking the template after Saudi Arabia and completely benching personnel that did not shine like Papu Gomez and an Unfit De maria for Alvarez, Molina and Co who took their chances in match day 2. Reminds me of failure of Southgate to continue playing Rashford who clearly was doing an Alvarez in matchday 2. I believe that was the difference.

I was shocked that he wasnt starting lisandro and lautauro but you cant say much when the results are there. Having dybala, lautaro, di maria, gio rodriguez, palacios, lisandro, tagliafico as options off the bench is wild too.
Yep. Variants and versatility is the name of the game for Scaloni. He has a lot to choose from, even though many of those names didn't seem that big before the WC. It goes to show that a great team is not necessarily about having a lot of big stars, but more about the chemistry and the mystic. All those young players have been watching Messi for 15 years. They'll die running for him if they have to.

Brazil went with too many forwards. I said before world cup. No midfield except Casemiro. Argentina put 4 to counter the 3 of Croatia. This is where Scaloni is so good. Saudi result was a freak. They had 36 game unbeaten streak before coming to world cup.

Scaloni is the best international manager there is currently cause he has got Messi but other teams do still have better squads, but his ability to interchange formations but still keep the same outcomes and identity is crazy, even Messi said yesterday he is very accurate in his tactics he hinted at knowing what Croatia were gonna do and clearly he wasn’t lying, that 4 man midfield was super smart, to control the game more but to also allow Messi to completely stay up the field
In the final it’s clear Di Maria has simply been fully charged, we know how amazing he is in finals like versus and Italy and especially Brazil on the final day he’s the one that likes to do the hard work which is why I’m sure the attack will be Julian, Messi, Di Maria on Sunday

He basically has 2 choices now
1) Go with the 3 at the back like against Holland to have Romero provide cover to Molina against Mbappe, and have Martinez provide cover to Acuna against Dembele, and stuff the midfield with Enzo, MacAllister and De Paul with Messi and Alvarez up top. but the problem with this is, it leaves Otamendi 1v1 against Giroud which would be a mismatch. A solution could be to have Romero play central and Otamendi to his right, but do you want rash Otamendi facing up against Mbappe?
2) He goes with the usual lopsided 4 - 4 - 2, with Di Maria back in the side providing width on the right and Acuna providing width on the left, but this has too many issues. For example, you are leaving Mbappe 1 v1 with Molina which is very dangerous especially since Di Maria is 35 and can't really track back because you are losing the entire purpose for having him there, and if you have a midfielder cover, they get outnumbered in the midfield and Greizmann will be dangerous. Plus the biggest danger will actually be Acuna v Dembele, since Acuna can't go up for fear of being exploited.
I think he's more likely to go with a 3, and so Di Maria won't start, but then again, he could find other solutions

I would say only 3. goal was pure brilliance from Messi but then game was fully open an Croatia played 3 3 4 formation, while for first two you could run a Benny Hill track in background how clumsy they were .. but at the end of the day we cannot be sad since we had lady luck on our side vs Belgium, so this returned in full circle... It blows my mind that people think the goals were lucky. That penalty could not have been more obvious. Impeding the man and not the ball. And in the second goal, the amount of control Alvarez showed while running full speed while the ball bounces around is insane. But I get it, Argentina doesn’t play like a European side so European pundits just don’t get it.

If you don't give that a penalty, i don't know what should be given (maybe the dive by Ronaldo is a clear penalty according to you). Are you guys really this dumb???

How are the first two goals lucky? Both were because of teamwork and skills. The first one was a good pass from Enzo to Alvarez, a counterattack earning a penalty. The second one was also a counterattack, and while the Croatian defending was not good, it was also thanks to Molina's decoy run that helped create space for Alvarez and confused the defence. Disgraceful and dismissive as usual to say Argentina were just lucky, these guys will never show proper respect to this team's performance.
The penalty was a bad call. Alvarez had no chance, and the keeper pulled his hands and everything back in. Not a foul. The ball was gone. But all Argentina penalties were like this.
One time you beat someone without the reffs help, i will say it is deserved. But that still didn't happen thi WC.

the second goal was 100% lucky, just as lucky if not more than our goal vs brazil, both times we tried to kick the ball away and both times it magically ends up at alvarez's feet. the pen i wont speak of, idc if it was clear or not, it was controversial and 50/50 thats all i know, but to say that 2nd goal wasnt lucky is just false. fair play to alvarez for still still running, but when that goal went in i knew we were never winning, everything was going against us and it wasnt meant to be unfortunately.

The only thing that is obvious is that Argentina started the tournament in the worst possible way and from there on working hard and with full believe in themselves went through all the obstacles and knew how to win every final they played. That is the obvious thing, their fighting spirit, their supreme football skills, the unity in the group and finally the best crowd supporting unconditionally in the good and bad moments. No wonder the dutch at the penalties shoot out missed badly, the crowd played its game too

Not only that, he's proven he can play anywhere on the attacking line. His passing and vision are superb (second goal against France is a surgical pass with just the right speed and location for MacAllister to pick it up and pass it to Di María with a single touch). He's a good dribbler, her takes his profession seriously and doesn't party, and he has 3 lungs. And most of all, he's a sponge, an observer and a learner. This kid is destined to be legend.
World Cup squad for Argentina has always been weak. Given the problems with AFA and its selection process etc. But its always players like Maradona or Messi that gathers the team and treads along. While other teams have a balanced and strong team all around like Germany, France, Croatia etc. So it would be a miracle that Argentina got along this far and it all falls on the shoulders of Messi and it is no easy task.
My favorite Argentina player of all time is Riquelme. What a playmaker. He played chess with the ball from the mid field and he got so brutally attacked as the opponent team's coach knew his value. I will never forgive that hothead Maradona for leaving him out of one World Cup Squad.

How many teams played perfectly in international competition anyways, France didn't always play the greatest in 2018 but they won and that's what matters. It was just a basic normal assist and nothing else, the glory should be given to Alvarez who scored two goals to secure Argentina a final, instead they're giving glory to Messi because of a basic assist. If it was Messi that scored the two goals and Alvarez with that assist, no body would have talk of Alvarez, but the headline would have been "Messi double secure Argentine to Final"

Croatia has shown throughout the tournament they can come back from deficits. So mentally and experience-wise they were ok after penalty. Their players didn't even made a big deal of it.
Also throughout the tourney Croatia had issues with shots on target, they prepared this match the same way against Brazil, expecting penalties. You should be happy that Argentina looks to score always.

Argentina still didnt won the CUP. For me, they play ugly but they have fast and good player which learn from Messi how to play bad.
