I spent a lot of time thinking about abilities that orbit your character after playing Devouring Orb in Last Epoch. So, +1 sword count vs +2 sword count and +1 sword distance: Distance gives you larger dead zone and also decreases dps because it takes longer for the rotation speed to increment to the next sword.
However, the extra sword makes up for the latter and you also get better damage projection, so it's still kind of weird.

good thoughts! btw, in the full game, there are also modifier items that affect ORB type spells synergistically - e.g. a ring that increases the rotation speed :)
