How to beat bigger, stronger opponents - De Groot BJJ
Вставка
- Опубліковано 4 бер 2019
- In this video, I address the two concepts that I believe are the most important when fighting someone that is a lot heavier and bigger than you. These are useful tips for small bjj players.
1. Manage the distance
2. Finish with leg or neck attacks
I explain how to apply these concepts and I show some of my own competition footage against big guys where I apply them.

If you liked this video, also check out how I used a guillotine choke to beat an opponent TWICE my size:

Excellent. Applicable even for a 190lb brown belt dealing with an overweight 260lb white belt. Once you have to deal with the girth on top, it's a great deal harder to escape to a superior position. Distance management is critical. Great advice.
Really like how you add footage after explaining the concept. Good work
I love this video. I currently have 3 rib fractures from being squished by bigger rolling partners. It's nice to see another smaller person not just surviving but thriving!
Great video. Just what I was looking for, being a featherweight (41 years old) that gets smashed by big guys almost every training session. I will focus my game against them on collar sleeve and attacking the feet. Thanks!!
Thank you Daniel for the tip, I just started a Brazilian ju jit su and my classmate just made a remark tonight that I am a too light like a feather lol. I found your video!
You picked the right martial art! Technique conquers everything
@@havenbjj 😊 Thank you
Thank you man! Respect to putting actual clips of you using the moves!
Thank you for this video! I have a hard time rolling with larger guys and I find myself getting smashed a lot. I will try this technique tonight 🙃
Hope it works for you!
Champ! Really enjoy your simple way of explaining so effective techniques!! Looking forward for the world class training camp with you!
Great video, my daughter is finding it hard to roll with a much bigger girl. I dont roll but I understand Jujitsu, and my immediate instinct was to take a leg and go for a heel hook, but I am not sure if they have thought that technique yet, as most of the subs are armbars and front chokes. Shes a white belt but got 4 stripes on her first promotion, I think she s a natural. I like what you said about controlling the space and transitioning to the back. Thanks for the info
Be careful, heel hooks are usually illegal in gi competitions. Hope your daughter will beat a lot of bigger girls 💪
very good daniel . nice work.
Great video bro 🤙
Thanks Dennis!
Great video
Cheers Floyd!
Oss bro this was really helpful 🙏🏿
Been rolling with guys bigger than me and I'm struggling from getting smashed. I'm a really light guy so this is helpful. Also, I learned that a bigger opponent's weakness is their legs.
That was sick u just made me realize what I need to change in my game
That's great to hear!
Great video !
Subscribed!
Will to see more champ
Doing my best to drop new videos every week! Glad you like them
3:40. Subbed. Lets go champ!
Thank you so much man! Keep it going!
You're very skilled.. good job
Thank you!
I'm a little girl that has to fight against big tall boys, so I better learn from this type of videos
Me too
Just kick them in the balls 👍
What if opponent is bigger guy but always kneel down on his knees and you can't move him around?
im in a kids class but all the kids are way smaller than me so I always roll with the adults, so this will help a ton!
So cool.. also reminds me of beetles fighting.
Great 👍🏼 stuff - young wrestlers when you’re in your 50’s…
I’m the smallest guy in my gym. 5’7” 156 lbs. I’m rolling against guys some 6’ 4” 250 lbs. I’m a 3 stripe white belt. If you had to break down a strategy best suited for me at my level what would the breakdown look like? What would be the first thing I must focus on and master? Much thanks.
You can definitely apply the concepts of the video Charles! Make sure to focus on distance management, don't let them get close to you no matter what.
Nice video👍 how would you keep the distance in nogi when spider guard is not available?
I play a lot of kneeshield and reverse dlr nogi, not as much distance control, but nogi also makes the weight and power disadvantage less important, since it's harder to pin me.
Makes sense! Thank u 👍
Legit!
i am 65kg and a guy in my group is 160kg any tips on that?
Run!! Generally not a great idea to train with someone a lot bigger often. For neither of you it's a realistic training. Every once in a while you can roll, but I would focus more on people closer to your size
@@havenbjj you mean run like a coward?
@@user-fm5sg3ls5b Run for your body, Run to keep your bones and joints intact and in good health, run to avoid the abuse and injuries to the body which you have to carry for the rest of your life.
i am groot
No no, I am Groot
I’m a kid and can’t do ankle locks are there any other options than back and foot locks?
I'd put most of your focus in developing great backtakes
Like Daniel said, take the back, this open up an avenue for a rear naked choke submission but honestly, try to work on the stuff you can't do the most, you tend to find that it's not strength based really and more technique, work on being able to keep hold of your opponent and then finding the angle that hurts the most and doesn't make you tired, sometimes you don't really have to do much and they will tap like crazy, remember, if you're cranking that submission and getting nowhere, adjusts it, push or pull the submission in a different direction, adjust your posture, adjust your hip placement , all this means is, move into a different position until you find something that works, good luck man I hope you're doing well
Would you have some tips for closed guard and half guard against bigger opponents?
Keep distance!
In my friend group I'm the most experienced in jiu jitsu, I've beaten everyone in my friend group but today I was beaten by my friend thats twice my weight. My jaw was already injured but he won fairly. I wasn't expecting to lose and its really bothering me. I'm having a rematch tomorrow
You got this Scott! Keep him at a distance and I'm sure you'll do great
You lost me at “pull guard” lol 😉
Being a smaller guy most of my life 150to165 from 16to30 years old it's the FIGHT in the dog fuck them bigger dudes good video
How can a belt so ragged NOT have any stripes on it!? Do you jump from school to school?
Nope been pretty loyal to my gym. I do train a lot and wash my belt too. Competitors at The House FC don't get stripes. It's been years since I got one
3:33 image in that was a street fight, he could lift you with one arm and bury you
If it was football though, we both would have gotten a red card
Nice! You deserve a few tacos al pastor 😏✌️
Tacos
Thanks for the tips. Almost all the men at my gym is 30 to 70 pounds heavier than me. All they do is smash me 🤣
How to beat Brock Lesnar as a smaller guy?
I would try to become a bigger guy
160 pound bjj fighter vs a 250-420 pound bjj figher
Oh. So just be better at jiu jitsu than them? Got it.
Way to open why get on your back
Thanks for the advice!
Great video
