Removing the turbo will prevent melting the plastic cover.
You are a wise man
Wouldn't the car run poorly though and lose hp?
I was being sarcastic lol turbos are the way forward in life
It's much cheaper and faster to not start the engine. Takes literally no time at all.
I tried to get audi to take my turbo off my S3. But they said they couldn't just take it off without replacing it with another one. I guess when I get time I'll UA-cam it and do it myself
This video has no filler. It is exactly as long as it needs to be. More people should follow your example
Exactly.
Most youtubers would make it 15min video with 3min introduction and 2min sponsored fragment.
@@kaziupir Don't forget the clickbait title and thumbnail.
"What VW doesn't WANT you to KNOW!"
"This part could DESTROY your ENGINE!"
If they did that they'd all be predictably the same Timmy. A good production is knowing when to be succinct, and when its best to elaborate.
In this video we'll talk about engine covers. So what are engine covers and where do they come from...
This is why manufacturers need to start making the valve cover the center-piece of the engine bay again not some cheap flimsy cover
Plastic/rubber covers are used in modern cars for engine sound and vibration isolation. Not the good brap stututu sounds but engine droning and mechanical noise
Modern direct injection engines are way louder than old MPI systems due to their injectors working with magnetic valves that produces a very audible clicking sound. The cover is in most cases stuffed with dampening foam which reduces the amount of noise coming through to the cabin and/or people around the car.
This was done due to EU crash regulations not something Volkswagen wanted to do.
Bro forreal. The mk8 engine cover in particular is literally the plainest thing I’ve ever seen. Not even a logo on that POS. Pathetic attempt.
@@leonlange861 i've always wondered what the hell that clicking noise is thanks
I only removed mine in my MKV because I added an aftermarket intake. If it wasn't for that reason, I would have to keep mine because it also acts as an air box. Clever design by VW when VW was still making quality cars.
VW is all in on the EV market now. They don’t care about ICE customers anymore. This will not turn out well for them or their potential customers.
Yeah the first time I saw that engine air box cover combo my head nearly exploded
I have MK5 R32, engine is awesome to look at.
My mk6r is the same way but i put an IE CAI and chucked the stock cover/airbox in a dumpster
I don’t consider the integrated cover and airbox a “quality” feature. Lol
Best UA-cam video ever or at least Top 5! Clear, quick and concise. I don't even own one those cars, it was just in my algorithm so I clicked.
The recall includes changing the turbo out for an all new designed IS15 unit. The compact size will no longer contact the engine cover. You will appreciate the extra torque from 900 to 1800 rpms. Peak power also comes 3k rpms lower!
Better thing to do is send it to the junkyard and get the new Nissan Z. GTi is trash.
@@arunmfive good luck going on a long road trip or going to the the groceries with your kids in your Nissan Z.
@@arunmfive holy crap ,never have I heard someone say a z was a good option. They break faster

And you think that’s a good thing? 😂
@@jacksonvice6096 I mean my Z don’t but I’m not really biased like you as I’ve looked at buying a few GTI golfs as my sister also has one
Everybody laughed when VW took their engine covers for the Skoda and Seat models and just glued over the logos they needed. And then the marketeers took it further and just removed the logos all together. Just as cheap as removing the hood lifters from the VW and Seat models but adding TWO on every Skoda Octavia. Two years after production started every MK8 still comes with the lower ball joint for a hood lifter in the engine bay but the one on the bonnet is missing so nobody can easely add that back in. Cost- cutting took some weird routes here...
I suppose it comes because the unibody is same as Mk7
Engine Covers and hood lifters are a waste of material anyway and add just weight, without any useful purpose.
Honestly they should've kept the cover from the 3rd gen ea888. It looked fine and didn't start a bonfire in your engine bay.
They only changed it because of a law suit if I remember correctly. A piece of the old engine cover hurt someone in an accident so they changed it from the hard plastic to a foam but obviously didnt account for the heat problem lol
@@scott745 oh wow I didn't know that!
@@scott745 ...wtf how.
@@xXYannuschXx same, I call bull on someome getting hurt from it. Sounds like a victim scam.......
The gen3 cover is not able to isolate the noise from fuel injectors. It does not fit the evo4 engine too
Dealer: "Hi yes there is a recall for your vehicle, we need you to bring it in immediately"
Me: "Okay is it serious?"
Dealer: "Yes your engine could catch fire, drop what you're doing and come in ASAP"
Me: Brings vehicle in.
Dealer: Opens hood, throws cover away.
Dealer: "You're all set"
Me: "WTF did i just waste my day for?"
And it's 100$ only :)
i could have sworn you were gonna be like "And the car caught fire half way to the dealership" XD lmao
I love how straight to the point this is.
I guess Renault had it right all along by not offering any engine covers to start with
Too be fair Renault knew it would be taken off alot as their cars are unreliable junk I've owned 2 both turds that cost me alot of stress and money
seriously.. I mean, on anything non-performance owners never look under the hood. why waste the money?
@@spinnetti lol but we gotta give them credit on the Clio and Megane RS, they smoke both of their German counterparts
@@spinnetti engine covers act as sound deadening too. That's actually why the mark 8 cover is flimsy and soft, it's all acoustic foam.
I have a renault. It has a big floppy engine cover. It even has a plastic cover for the battery. The engine bay is a plastic mess and Renault's engineering decisions are usually pretty damn bad. Everything besides their diesel engines suck.
I remember when engine covers weren't a thing
I can't believe VW keep finding ways to cheap out. Making a flimsy version of this cover. My 21 Polo GTI has the same cover but it's hard plastic
ALL volume car manufacturers keep finding ways to cheap out, and they have done ever since the earliest days of vehicle mass production.
Yeah i noticed alot of red flags
The the 7.5 has more features to it conpare to the 8 due to their cost saving drive , you can tell from the interior
they have to do this in order to stay alive nowadays, you can just stop buying their cars until they get their shit together.
I got love for Volkswagen, i have a 2013 GTI, but i’m surprised with how big they are and the history they have, yet somehow have reliability issues. Not all cases, but they’re pretty damn common.
I bet my ass it also has a Skoda logo underneath it, even if you're in the US.
the 8th gen golf over all is a huge backstep to the 7th gen. like you can really see and feel that the engineers didnt had near the budget as they had for the predecessor. i really hope they gonna fix all these small details with an facelift version, or else the 8th gen will properly be remembered as the worst golf of all.
C B We are all paying for Dieselgate....
@@cdpgbc-mw2kz I dont think its because of dieselgate, from a financial view vw recovered pretty quick from that. its more about cutting costs to safe money for developing all these new EVs i believe
My last GTI was a 2011, now I’m back to the GTI family with a 2022 SE.
It’s an awesome car, 0 issues so far, the car handles great and has so many luxury features. I’m loving it so far, giant leap from a Mk6.
If you haven’t driven one , go for a drive
@@closg9309 it isnt about the mechanics, or how they drive, thats the only things they made good, its more about small details and dumb design decisions they made to cut the costs, like that cheap engine cover, switching from real buttons to touch buttons, that new bugged out infotainmet system software, the abandonment of the 3 door versions, switching from bonnet damper to a simple stick and the overall look, feel an quality of the interior, especially directly compared to the mk7, which was a brilliant car
There’s a couple of enthusiasts at my local VW dealer, one of them wanted to buy my Final Edition when it was new but he couldn’t manage it for a few reasons. Whenever I drop by (like I did when the mk8 arrived) he always comes out to see me & make sure that I’ve kept his mobile number as he has first dibs for when I sell. My car is low mileage & pristine thanks to the PPF & my fastidious cleaning regime. Anyway, he has told me if I want the mk8, he will buy it and even swap me…….I smiled and said a firm No Thanks 😂
Everyone knows that the Mk8R drives hard, the new drive system is a great improvement but reality is, used as a daily most folks can’t even take full advantage of the mk7 on the roads and keep their licence. Of course you can run the gauntlet and join on the back roads but in reality your splitting seconds. For me, the better interior, the superior fit and finish wins hands down.
I really ought to thank VW for making the mk8 the way they did, it’s actually increased the second hand value of mine. I realise COVID’s playing its part as well but just the fact the mk8 jumped from $57kAUD if the (7.5) to mid $70k AUD has helped the mk7’s too.
With the low quality interiors in the new model, unless BW does a backflip (which I doubt) my next daily will be another brand.
Go look at the door cards in the Mk8, just feel them, they feel very flimsy/Korean almost 😂, there’s tons of little things. The only real improvement on the mk8 interior is the floor mats 🤣
Not to mention, since when did VW take design from Toyota. I still think front on the Mk8 looks like a Corolla, side on it looks pretty good except for the wing and it’s rear end looks sharp but that face 🤮
They will get new ones, it will take some time to produce a decent amount to replace them all. Give it i think 2-3 months? Customers will get a mail from their service station as soon as these get the replacements shipped.
Like the airbag sensor recall that they suspended due to lack of parts. Still waiting for my fixed PODS sensor...
@@dubsessed9790 are you talking about the seat sensor on the passenger side? My mk7 won’t zip it about the passenger not being buckled in but literally nothing is in the seat.

*** recall states there will be a replacement at a later date. Use existing engine cover as a knee pad when jacking the vehicle 👍🏾 youll thank me later
Seems to me that VW is more concerned about touch screen controls than mechanical problems. Car engines today are not as attractive as in the past, too many hoses and things. Glad I bought my 2019 ! Thanks again, RickGTI….. 🌴
Well, because they’re expending they’re lineup with new electric vehicles. The new models have been asserted to a lot of cost cutting measures. Those touchscreen controls are one of them. They’re dog slow and not very intuitive nor are they pretty.
Hoses scare you or something?
@@frbrbrgrblgrr7777 hoses scare me when they disappear in a dark engine bay ! LOL 😂
so much scrutiny for not enough understanding of global economics. do you guys not realize there is a massive supply chain issue primarily with the chips that cost several limbs and organs? yeah, the chip issue alone is the reason why most cars coming out now have shortcomings in other areas aka the manufacturers saving money in areas where they see fit to make the car still hold up to their name without painting a giant skewed supply & demand graph on every hood. car enthusiasts should know better than to talk smack, you guys should know this stuff already. guess what, the biggest dealer on my entire country's coast only got 2 manual GTI's this year. they got 2 more just 1.5 weeks ago, 1 of them being mine. i threw a deposit on it as soon as it got on a ship in Germany from VW HQ because you know what? WERE LUCKY TO EVEN GET THESE CARS IN TODAYS CLIMATE. be grateful. fix the small things. or go drive a cheaper less refined "competitor" if you're not satisfied.

Exactly what the people need to hear. No more no less. This man is a king.
I was looking at dealer listings of GTIs and I was wondering why none of them had the engine cover. I thought it was just part shortages, not this recall.
this is why i always buy the last year production of that gen.
some people require a car now, and require a new car that has a warranty etc. or you know, just get fired from work and lose all income entirely due to being a stubborn car enthusiast. you guys are so nit picky. or youre all 21 or younger....so strange.
I just bought a 2022 arteon, no engine cover for me as well and the car is not aligned can you believe that a brand new $50,000 car and it's pulling to the right with less than 200 miles on it sometimes I feel that I'm on an abusive relationship with VW. Don't get me wrong I own an ID4 and a Jetta GLI as well and I love those cars but Volkswagen keep getting this quality issues in some basic things and it's driving me insane. I guess I love punishment because I keep buying these cars.
😱
Sounds like bad luck. I’m on my 4th VW and I’ve never had issues with anything.
VW is abandoning the ICE market and their customers.
I recently went from a 2012 GTI to a 2021 GTI and man I’m disappointed in the overall quality now that I’ve had it for a bit. OEM suspension is a lot stiffer than I expected and the seats are significantly less comfortable when you get into longer drives. Happy to have a newer car and I love the look of the Mk7.5 but I don’t think this is an all around better car than my MK6
@@RoninBeaver isn't GTI performance version? You get what you paid for...
IN THE BIN!
Same for Cupra Leon 310, however dealers says that "it's under development". I've got mine without that cover already.
I bought a new cupra ateca 300 HP EA888 evo4 in Mexico. Since day 1, it did not have the cover as per the recall... Here, the dealer just gave me a new and different engine cover, so yes, they are replacing it!
wow... Toyota has been so far the best on recalls. even my 12y old rav4 got a recall, they replaced some plastic parts for rear seatbelts. used to update powersteering box and some other things. i even know some hiluxes that had frames replaced eventho they where almost 10y old. they really care for the brands name and customers.
A friend just got a new Cupra 245 (basically a Mk8 GTI clubsport afaik) and that had the engine cover removed on delivery - no replacement.
To add to that: As for all i know this is only a problem on the MK8 with the EA888 Engine not the EA211 and 211evo, so all the models with a 2.0l Gas engine
There was a similar recall on Civics where the entire car is to be thrown into the garbage
Funny enough this is the same on Skoda, I work with a few Skoda techs and they had to throw a load out
I picked up my MK8 yesterday and the dealer had already removed the cover. No mention of a replacement in the future. At least my radiator seems to be solid...
Wow a straight to the point video? These are rare! Subbed
Took my 2019 Golf R for 20k service and they had a recall of a DSG shifter knob ring. I had no clue about it at that point.
Did VW's recall involve removing the shifter and DSG Gearbox?
Is it the silver ring on the base of the shift knob?

Damn that Mk3 Jetta is 🔥🔥🔥
I work at Volkswagen, it happend to a costumer. No you don't get a new cover its just without one because their working on a new one ATM. If it's happens turbo header and downpipe need to be replaced or they can be cleaned. Can cost up to 11k to fix
That happens to the evo 10 as Well.
And probably can cause damage to the coil packs too due to excessive heat. I know some Nissans have this problem due to the intake manifold completely covering the head.
Straight to the point I like it
If you remove this, expect noises from the 4 fuel injectors.
You can hear the injectors anyway
Lol, still gonna keep my mk7 Gti clubsport 3 doors for more years. A real one, i live in europe. And oh yes, its a manual one with bucket seats. With the R engine in it that has a dual injection system. Im sure if i import it in the usa i can make good money with it :)
Is the soft engine cover not part of the pedestrian safety measures? Surely they'll have to issue a new one.
Yes it is, VW are going to replace them all with a modified version.
@Retired Bore It's not there to reduce sound, or to discourage owners carrying out repairs, it is there for a reason.
When he tossed the engine cover away, I could feel the Scotty Kilmer vibes. 💯💯
Yeah, I got a letter and took it off a while ago. By the way, my dealership advised me to keep the cover in case they needed to send it back so, I wouldn't throw it away.
You will get a replacement on they still working on good options. By bet is they trying to find the cheapest solution that works
It's there for a reason. Dust, road debris, and other media will sit on the electronics above the valve cover and errode/weather them.
He's not debating that it's there for a reason, he's saying its a piece of shit, cheap manufacturing.
weird how that apparently is an issue on them even tho it hasn't been 20 years ago.
Mine's 7 years old and no cover, but I do get in with a cloth every so often and get what I can
Neither of my cars had one. My old R32 didn't have one either. All looked great under the hood.
@@RCXDerp yup, has nothing to do with keeping dust out or reliability, i'd argue that it woudl actually help with electrical components since there isn't as much heat buildup.
Surprise they didn't come out with some fancy carbon Fibre replacement.
They are, but the dealers will not get them until October....................
Anyone who bought Transporter T7, also get ready for recall. Because your rear door electric handles will stop opening your doors, because some wires will get broken from factory. Trust me, I was already fixing this.
Took delivery of my Mk8 without the cover, VW not shipping cars with them at the moment.
Thanks for explaining why mine doesn’t have it.
Thanks for the advice, I've done that with the mk8 and bought a mk7.5, finally problem solved (this comment is a joke (as the mk8 ok I'll stop it))
I removed the damping mat attached to the hood on my mk7 because it lost its shape. Perhaps also due to the heat of the turbo running hotter because remapped. But the engine cover will stay on because i want the ignition coil cables be protected from martens or weasels or whatever gets under the hood. VWs "solution" for the mk8 is a workaround, no real problem solving in my eyes
Yup, tons of EVO4s have had the cover taken off at the dealers here, no replacement
From the recalls I have done, volkwagen has yet to come out with a replacement engine cover design.
eons ago got a recall like the for the Touareg... Take some cover off and throw it out. That was it. No biggie. I'd through it out anyway. I also throw out the under hood liner routinely.
Those american vw guys are crazy
Vw ingeniers dont put cover for no reasons. They know what they do
did you hit that truck with the engine cover in the original take @ 0:22 ? 🤣😂
When VW can't even make an engine cover properly it's time people realise a modern VW ain't as reliable as people say.
what does an useless engine cover have to do with reliablity, its just a piece of plastic no one needs
Meh it’s 2022 and my tuned 2018 mk7.5 golf r is still going strong with proper basic maintenance.

Hey there, sice i do work for VWAG, for ŠKODA AUTO.. we do share this problem, as by now, we do make cars without any enginecovers, ( RS models) so, I Cannon really tell, but it would make sense for VWAG to get a replacement for this, since it is a part of a purchased vehicle. Otherwise it should be mass suable, Wich definitely is not an intetion for VWAG.
Scotty Kilmer will like the sound of this

I wish someone would make an aftermarket cover that was black, and not carbon fiber. 😔
The second recall ist coming soon. There is a new cover that u get!
Radiators are floppy and loose in some of these MK8’s also.
We have a video coming on this
😳
Alex F Yikes....Mark8 GTI...reliability issues. The touch screen dash looks like a reliability nightmare to come.
....how the fuck can the MK8 be so much more expensive, but at the same be so much worse in terms of build quality than the MK7?!
Once a company is publicly traded customers are secondary to shareholders. It should be very apparent.
Yup..my formentor with the same engine came from dealer without it..and no eta on it
Aren’t VAG engineers just the greatest….
...varies with model apparently...rookies with vw, Skoda and Seat...seasoned ones with the upmarket brands
Does the engine cover do anything, or only aesthetic ?
Does it need it anyway? It's not like it's trying to muffle the racket of a diesel engine.
Will this have an affect on engine noise inside the cabin?
So many things VW did wrong on this last ICE version of the gti, although small but they add up. Sad and unbelievable they would do this to such an iconic car before switching over to EV. The mk8 should’ve been the best in everything as a proper send off.
no zip tie fix ? disappointing
:) Why is there no engine upper protection cover in my Skoda Kamiq 1.5 tsi 2024 model vehicle? In the vehicle images on official sites, there is a cover on the engine. :(
It's mainly because it overheats the engine not because of it going back and hitting the turbo, it's mounted on 4 plastic 'clips' that it slots into. We are doing recalls on certain Cupra Formentors and etc using the same engine cover.
They should give all owners a nice CF replacement cover
id drill a hole in each side and zip tie it to a hose or something to keep it secure. I like keeping the engine covers on as they provide sound insulation in may cases.
smart
always remove the cover, it creates too much heat (1.8t users know) and it destroys the wires and connectors
Oh yes, I luckily had the BAM 1.8t in my Cupra, which already had the heat shielded cables. But the locking tabs on the coil plug connectors were all missing...
You dont need engine cover it just muffles sound and engine heat isn’t hot enough to damage the hood anyway ..
When a car manufacturer covers its engine with a piece of plastic it is a sign that it is not proud of the engine. Ferrari shows its engines from the outside for a reason.
where is the vw logo on mk8 is it aftermarket or something I dunno mk7 engine covers so smooth.
Removing the engine will prevent the turbos from melting the cover
The answer is no other cover at the moment but there will be one rolling out eventually
That cover looks like it came straight off of a Chevy impala….what was wrong with the neat rectangular mk7 cover?
The really bad thing is it says on the recall bulletin due to poor roads and very sporty driving 😂 not the fact they have made a crap cover! 🤣
same thing for Škoda Octavia RS 2.0tsi
Should drive vehicle to VW dealer to have a tech remove the cover. Tech gets paid, you don’t have to pay anything since it’s a recall.
Ilike my engine cover a Lil more then my turbo! The turbo makes my car waste more gas. Ama remove the turbo and keep my engine cover from melting and save some fuel💪
They look crap anyway. First thing I would have done if I owned one. I genuinely got an intake for my mk5 because I hated the engine cover which is also the air snorkel and filter so was the only way to "delete" it.
What ever was VW thinking putting on such a poor cheap cost cutting engine cover like that in the first leave. Hopeless for a German brand.
this is why you go for lexus
i mean to be fair the golf was never meant to be luxurious or premium, volkswagen basically is translated to peoples car. still not acceptable for this price tho
I remove those types of covers on my personal vehicles and keep them in the garage for when I sell the car. In my opinion, they don't allow the ignition coils, sensors and valve train to cool as best as possible.
Umm…..VAG have budgets the size of small countries GDP’s. I’m confident they have accounted for this anyway. Conversely, the cover probably helps retain heat
Even simpler fix: zip ties
Do engine covers heat up the motor in the summer more?
I was wondering if this also applies single turbo diesels like Golf GTD ?
My gti came in May(brand new) , it didn't have even one , and u found a piece of pizza on top of the Engine NO JOKE !
I'll just keep my mk7 golf r... 👍
Too ugly.
Seems like a good choice
MK 8 R is wayyy better
I have to disagree, the build quality is inferior to the mk7. The doors don't even clunk the same. No gass struts in the bonnet and a plastic cover that comes loose and melts on the turbo! That's just the start, no knobs to work the heating etc... I like a physical knob! 😂 They've cut corners on the quality and are charging an extremely high price for less. No thanks!
