  • Charles Mingus was one of the all-time great jazz bass player but more than that he was also an innovative composer and a leader with a clear vision of where he wanted his music to go. In 1975 he made his first appearance at the Montreux Jazz Festival, joined by the players who had worked with him on the landmark 'Changes One' and 'Changes Two' albums, fro which the was primarily drawn. As an extrat treat, on the last two tracks they are joined by guests Gerry Mulligan on baritone sax and Benny Bailey on trumpet.

I love watching the expression of pleasure, of pure joy, of Baritone sax Gerry Mulligan's face when Benny Bailey is doing his solo on the trumpet

Benny Bailey's solo seemed to be a maternal affection, how many memories must have awakened in Gerry Mulligan. wonderful.

How could Mingus create such great music?? That's beyond comprehension.

it's interesting how Mingus has a unique sound that is easily recognizable, he reminds me somewhat of Beethoven, in the sense that there is certain darkness ever present underneath the melody, hinting at something deeply melancholic

I heard this Mingus group in Norrkoping, Sweden obviously without Gerry M. and Benny B. Small auditorium, close to stage,
Very impressed by Pullen and Adams. Pullen could play anything that night, and did.
Walrath was hesitant at every solo, but played ok. Danny Richmond elegant as ever, Their personalities came through, and Mingus was in a great mood, possibly under the influence. Glad I went.

Did someone forget to give Mulligan the changes?! After looking at Benny Bailey with such tenderness during his solo, I expected so much more from the Bari.

He was there in spirit but maybe had trouble getting into the Mingus vibe - don’t know if he was a regular with the group.

Mulligan looking happy! He could be moody on stage. He really digs Benny Bailey, who I met when he lived in Holland. Nice guy, and an asset for the local scene even as a trumpeter over 70. Mulligan starts his solo out of tune, but after a few bars, he is okay.

Apart from the bass and drums this aint much cop at all.
It's a sparse (and very sad) tune which really works on the record.
    Not so good here.
