      Kolyada was so wonderful to watch. He was a true artist on ice with gorgeous technique. But he never managed to fully overcome his competition nerves and hiccoughs. • @TheSkatingLesson
      @TheSkatingLesson  Місяць тому +34

      You are very obsessive about the interrupting. In the other show, it was very critical to challenge Maya and she has a way of talking over me as well. What you are not understanding is that in today's landscape with social media, there are certain things that she can say/can't say --and there are always things that I cannot let go unchecked. These episodes about Russia are very tricky. There are people who watch who will be Pro-Russia, Anti-Russia, etc. I am trying to provide an even discussion of the skating. The reality of the situation is that there is skating occurring in Russia and they will likely be back. There is also the context of doping and war. To let anything go risks a social media firestorm and has to be handled in advance.

    • @Rachel-rs7jn
      @Rachel-rs7jn Місяць тому +4

      @@TheSkatingLesson The Maya video was literally the first time I ever posted about the interrupting, so no, I am definitely not "obsessive". Lots of people point it out, so I'm not sure why you're attacking me in particular when I went out of my way to pay you a compliment. However, I do understand what you are saying here and I appreciate that you clarified. As I understand, you are saying that there were certain things you were afraid she'd say and you wanted to nip it in the bud.

      @ArohaStill Місяць тому +2

      @@TheSkatingLesson I really enjoy Maya and I am glad you brought up the more important doping issue that is still what bothers most people who love the sport and want fair competition. We are not inherently anti-Russian. I actually blame western aggression for this conflict, so I appreciated you didn't let that one go. Would love to know if the ISU or IOC has ever answered why they do not adopt such anti-doping measures, is it just cost?

    Kostornaia recently said the exact thing that Elena Betchke said that Adelia is just always going to be small. Kosto said she used to see Petrosian’s mom all the time and that Adelia is already the size of her mother and they’re both lucky in that regard that they don’t have to face the same kind of growth during puberty like most female skaters do. Adelia already grew so much the past 2 seasons so I don’t think RusFed will be concerned about that. Also one of Russia’s main figure skating journalists said he heard that RusFed really likes Dikidzhi for the future. I really want to see Kaganovskaia/Nekrasov at the qualifier.

    The way Lena described Moskvina’s approach to handling failure highlights what makes her a great coach-especially for mature skaters. Meanwhile, when an Eteri skater breaks down or fails, there’s apparently no need for a remediation plan. A psychologist? Please, who are we kidding? Eteri just moves on to the next skater, who suddenly becomes everyone’s darling thanks to the propaganda machine. Take Adelya, for example-always in Sonia’s shadow with crappy programs until Sonia hit puberty and got injured. Then, like magic, Adelya reappears as the new genius. And so on

    I appreciate this conversation about pairs and I respect Elena Bechke's knowledge, despite my critical comments and differences of opinion. Thanks for spending a lot of time discussing pairs. The French team Bechke referenced are Pavel & Camille Kovalev. He is from Russia and she is French. Pavel has a slim build and Camille has a voluptuous build, but she is not taller than her husband. The Kovalevs have struggled with consistency recently in large part due to injuries. Pavel is coming back from a recent surgery so they lacked sufficient training time this season. They are not a typical pair, but I find them quirky, creative, and interesting. They have obvious passion, desire and ambition for pairs skating, which is admirable. They had improved a lot in recent years, but have recently struggled with consistency, again, mostly due to injuries and rehab from surgery. I do not think the Kovalevs' overall difficulties are related to a physical mismatch necessarily. It is likely more their technical basics and lack of training time this season. I have to disagree with Bechke about size issues being an automatic problem. Some pairs teams, e.g., Cain/ LeDuc were able to make similar height work for them via emphasizing their lines and other strong points. Conti/ Macii do not seem physically mismatched to me. They are taller than the Kovalevs, but similiarly, Macii has a slim build and Sara Conti has a voluptuous build. C/M are close in height but Sara is not taller. As a team, they are competitive due to their drive and consistency, plus strong political backing. Sara is charismatic and effervescent but C/M do not project an emotional connection and they do not have great range nor transitions. Sara does not have great air positions in the lifts either and they are quite slow, yet they have good skating skills, flow, and generally good consistency despite more recent stumbles. Their program and music selection has not been very good overall, especially not in terms of setting them apart. But they get good scores apparently due to strong political backing.

Every skater knows exactly what they did wrong the second they did it. But then she goes and defends Eteri doing just said. That what they say are facts and so on. As if he's the only male skater to have performed MJ and Elvis material! 🙄 I would be more impressed if some of the Russian pairs, and indeed other international pairs mined their own cultural hero histories to come up with creative programs, instead of constant Western cultural references. Albeit that the focus might be more on Western references next year at Worlds in Boston. However, this Western cultural dominance needs to be freshened up with exploration of other cultures, in terms of music, choreo, and heroic performance themes. I said it here first. Diversify!

    Come on now, Galliamov is not the best pairs guy ever, not even among Russian pairs! Surely Bechke remembers Sergei Grinkov; Anton Sikharulidze (now leading Rusfed); Max Trankov; Vlad Morozov; and, of course, Bechke at least remembered to give Dmitriev, and her former husband, Denis Petrov, some credit. Even Klimov was quite good during his career with Stolbova. Plus, seriously, there are other European and North American pairs guys who are right up there in the same category as 'one of the best', including: David Pelletier; Robin Szolkowy; Morgan Ciprés; Rockne Brubaker; John Zimmerman; Eric Radford; Chris Knierim; Brandon Frazier; Timothy LeDuc; Bruno Massot, who became better with Savchenko; and Mervin Tran who skated successfully with a number of partners. Tran was so good and so smooth. Con Han was very good with his partner, Wenjing Sui. Among guys who are still active competitively, give Maxime DesChamps his props! Plus, quite honestly, IMO, Danny O'Shea is one of the best pairs guys ever! Danny was also a champion junior singles skater domestically. Danny is one of the most loyal and patient pairs partners, too, along with Brandon Frazier, who stuck diligently by Haven Denney after her devastating knee injury. All of these pairs guys can give Galliamov a run for his money in so many areas of pairs expertise, not to mention in aspects of personal maturity, character, and personality!

    It's interesting that Bechke is saying don't act as if you think you're the best like she feels Dmitri K does. That's good advice, except many Russians do not follow that advice. So many of them feel they are better than other non-Russian skaters, even if they don't display it in the same way as Dmitri K. It is that pervasive and persistent Russian arrogance that definitely needs to be toned down. I do not fault Dmitri K that much because it seems genuinely about him desiring and striving to be better in a very outgoing, joyful, competitive way. Whereas I believe Mishina/Galliamov are more quiet and subtly defensive in their underlying arrogance and feeling of superiority, especially after being taken under Moskvina's wing and instilled with huge confidence. Moskvina is also responsible for making Boikova/ Koslovski champions with belief in themselves. B/K, IMO, have understandably been unwilling to cede that mantle to M/G. Perhaps B/K should have trusted Moskvina more. But it was obviously a difficult burden for B/K to see their rising pairs dominance both domestically and internationally usurped by M/G. I feel that M/G, while technically brilliant, are not that great artistically. They do not connect emotionally in the way that B/K do. They are not risk-takers in the way that B/K are, and they do not project to the audience as well as B/K. Of course, B/K have some aesthetic weaknesses that Moskvina was able to camouflage, but I appreciate B/K 's bold intensity and their more outgoing personalities. I can admire M/G's tech brilliance, but I think they move slow over the ice, and I think most of their programs have not been very good. Mainly just the programs that won them their first World championships. I realize that M/G are favored by Rusfed and Bechke because they are Moskvina's prize pair, but I'd rather see B/K or one of the younger teams get the neutrality call to compete in the Beijing qualifier. Galliamov is NOT neutral politically. The protest by Ukrainian athletes should be given some respect, Dave, instead of this chief p.r. push for Russian athletes.

Given the list of restrictions, given the fact that the 4 spots will be reviewed by ISU, IOC and god knows how many other organizations, given the fact that the neutrality status can be taken away at any point, it is such a lottery who if anyone will end up competing in 2026 olympics.

    Why this conceit by Bechke that Mishina/ Galliamov are a lock for an OGM!? I get this adoration of Moskvina, but M/G are not the best at everything just because they are seen as Russia's best. Plus, M/G have to be accepted by the ISU committee as neutral athletes if/ when Rusfed selects them. None of that should be considered a slam dunk. BTW, Dave, you said Hase/Volodin do not have speed. IMO, Miura/Kihara are the fastest team at the top. Conti/Maci are glacially slow but have good flow over the ice. Hase/Volodin have decent speed, absolutely comparable with Mishina/Galliamov who have somewhat labored crossovers. Deanna/Max also have decent speed fairly comparable to M/G, who are not as fast as you seem to think they are.

      @@hannibaljustincase9985 M/G are obviously technically brilliant and a very classic looking Russian pair. Moskvina helped give them direction, wonderful choreo and confidence in their abilities. Judges often tend to overdo scoring for Russian teams, especially on PCS. M/G do not yet connect that well emotionally, which takes time to develop. For the 2021-22 Olympic season, Moskvina did not choose the best music and program themes for M/G, plus they were up against the favored Sui/Han in Beijing, and a rejuvenated Tarasova/ Morosov. So what about M/G's WR stat. While they are very good technically, I do not think M/G or B/K and certainly not Peng/Jin were overall better than Knierim/ Frazier at the 2022 Olympics. It was just politics and perception that kept perfect performances by K/F down in 6th place. That's politically-biased figure skating judging.

    Can somebody please tell Bechke that the criteria is not who won 2024 Russian Nationals, and not who is the more consistent Russian pair. Each selected Russian athlete has to be chosen largely on the basis of proven political neutraility, which is problematic for the two top Russian pairs teams, and especially for Galliamov. I hope the ISU committee who reviews the chosen athletes will not succumb to p.r. or political pressure to accept Mishina/Galliamov as neutral athletes. I know the Russians think they deserve to win the OGM all the time in pairs, and they expect and desire this anointing to happen for M/G. I do not want to see that happen after all the hard work by so many current pairs athletes battling over this recent quad. It is much more interesting to see a diverse battle for Olympic gold in pairs rather than the arrogant conceit that Russian pairs skaters (i.e., M/G) should automatically be rewarded with Olympic gold. 🙄 In any case, there are a number of Russian pairs skaters who rep other countries and thus numerous Russians, including coaches, have continued to be highly visible in the sport despite the ban against those with no other options than representing Russia.

They just need more time ironing things out and finding material to define and enhance their partnership, which ain't easy. Evelyn Walsh was not a great physical match for Trennt, but they worked well together, and they had a palpable connection because their personalities jibed well, and they enjoyed skating together. Trennt & Evelyn skated in juniors and seniors without too much intense pressure. As seniors, they were able to rise quickly when other Canadian pairs ahead of them ran into injury issues. At a certain point, Trennt/ Evelyn's abilities peaked as a team. While they improved their twist, their elements lacked the power and punch needed to help them go far. With Lia, who is a better physical match, the jury is still out as to how far they can go in the current pairs field, which is heating up with hungry new teams. Fellow Canadians, Mimar/ Bombardier are looking very good in their international debut performances.

Both are an overreach, and grossly inappropriate, especially the latter which is the ISU bullying a woman who is just out of her minority.
