There is a culture of overcoming challenges and I was always surprised by the risks people would take in the name of adventure and thrill. In my opinion, anything that puts your life in jeopardy should not be considered for anything, let alone fun and adventure. He had a beautiful family and friends. Such a tragic and sad story...

I’ve been to Zion national park. Those trails and routes are no joke. The water there isn’t suitable for drinking and you can even die from it. I've done plenty of technical canyons throughout Utah, including Zion, but Heaps has always been on my list of canyons I won't do. I know someone personally who was doing the final rappel and his hand got too hot and he let go of the rope and started falling uncontrollably. Luckily he had a belay at the bottom to stop him. I don't know where the incident happened in the canyon, but that final rappel is sketchy. I remember hearing about another casualty years ago in Heaps at that final rappel and it convinced me that I don't want to do it. Sad to hear about another death in the canyoneering community.
@@kacee_is_bored That's unfortunate. It's unfortunate that it happened in the first place, but the total height of the cliff from where you start the 2 stage rappel from is about 425'. From the "bird perch", the second stage of the rappel, is 280'. The bottom of the rappel is large nasty and jagged boulders at the Upper Emerald Pools. The highest rappel I've ever done was 300' and that was insanely high. I knew a man who was on SAR in St. George who had to respond to a fatality at that exact same location around midnight years ago. You could see it in his eyes and in his tone of voice how it affected him emotionally to what he encountered. These types of accidents happen to even the most experienced people. It just takes one wrong step, or one wrong knot, or one loose rock or branch, etc. I feel for the family.
